Located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, only 90 miles from New York City, Camp Whirligig is designed to support the special needs of children on the autism spectrum and their families. Classes & Activities • Bring your favorite instrument(s) and explore music with the staff • Environmental learning – aquatic and forest ecology, astronomy, nature walks • Meet the farm animals • Outdoor recreation, games and family crafts • Make musical instruments or your own whirligig from recyclables • Music jams and group performances • Evening sing-alongs and family dances Food at Camp Whirligig Families will enjoy separate morning programs for children and adults, as well as afternoon and evening programs designed for the entire camp community. Time will also be set aside simply to relax and enjoy each other’s company. What is special about CAMP WHIRLIGIG? Each family will be assigned a Family Guide, a graduate level student of Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders, to facilitate positive family experiences at camp. Families will also get to enjoy camp within a community that understands and is accepting of autism. • Ashokan’s campus is handicappedaccessible, although navigating between buildings in wheelchairs can be challenging • If you have special needs (dietary, medical, or other), please let us know Details • Camp Whirligig is for families with autistic children and their siblings ages 4 to14 • Children under 4 are welcome, but must have parental care at all times • Exceptions to the 14-year age limit will be considered on a case-by-base basis • Family Guides will be graduate level students of Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders. They are volunteers and will receive Clinical Hours under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist. • A parent or legal guardian must be on-site at all times • Family personal care aides are welcome at a reduced fee (half price). the ashokan center - where nature inspires Camp Whirligig • For many campers, the food at THE ASHOKAN CENTER is the highlight of their experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinners are made from fresh, locally sourced natural and organic ingredients • Gluten-free and Casein-free, vegetarian, and vegan options are offered at each meal • A communal fridge is available for campers with special dietary and/or medical needs Accommodations • Cozy private lodging is provided for each family with a private bath
