“ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK” STAR, LAVERNE COX, TO SPEAK AT CSUF
Hear Emmy nominated actress, reality TV star, and transgender advocate, Laverne Cox.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Associated Students, CSUF, Inc. and the Executive Senate welcome Laverne
Cox to CSUF on May 6 at 7 p.m. in the Titan Gym for “Laverne Cox – Ain’t I a Woman?”
Laverne Cox is the first trans-woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted
television show, “Orange is the New Black.” A critically acclaimed actress, Cox has won rave
reviews for the groundbreaking role of “Sophia Burset,” an incarcerated African American
transgender woman, including an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy
Series for the role. TIME magazine named “Sophia Burset” the 4th most influential fictional
character of 2013 and Cox is also a recipient of the Dorian rising star award for “Orange is the New
Black.”
A renowned, in-demand speaker, Cox has taken her empowering message of moving beyond
gender expectations to live more authentically all over the country. As a transgender advocate Cox
continues to lend her voice to the cause of transgender visibility and equality. She is committed to
telling diverse and three dimensional trans stories in the media.
