Chip Seal
What is Chip Seal...
The Chip Seal Process
Compared to other surface
Step 1 Emulsion is sprayed
asphalt is applied onto the existing
treatments, chip seal is a quick
Step 2 Chip is applied

application providing minimum traffic
Step 3 Chip is rolled and seated
aggregate (chip) is embedded into the

Step 4 Road is swept and fog sealed
An evenly distributed layer of emulsified
emulsified asphalt, is rolled, swept and

Cape Seal
What is Cape Seal...
Double application of surface
Type II Cape Seal
•
Less expensive than mill and overlays
treatments. A chip seal is applied first,
•
3/8” chip seal
•
No milling required
followed by the application of slurry seal.
•
Type II slurry seal
•
No utility adjustments
•
Smooth surface vs. chip seal
•
More durable than a slurry seal
•
Significantly reduces cracking
•
No snowplow damage

Why Cape Seal?
•

•
Last longer (10 plus years)

Strong usage for residential streets
Sand Seal
What is a Sand Seal...
Why Sand Seal?
A sprayed application of asphalt
•
Enrich weathered pavements
emulsion followed by a covering
•
Fills fine cracks in the pavement
•
Additional skid resistance
•
Inhibit raveling
of clean sand or fine aggregate. A
pneumatic-tire roller is often used
after applying the sand. Excess
sand is removed from the surface
after rolling.
Chip Seal Underlayment

Why Chip Seal
Underlayment?
A chip seal that provides a waterproof

drivers from road hazards.
Chip seals are expected to provide at least 5 years of service; therefore,
three or four chip seals may be necessary for a pavement to reach its
design life. When applied on an existing flexible pavement, a chip seal
will provide a surface wearing course, seal the underlying pavement
against water intrusion, enhance or restore skid resistance, and enrich
the pavement surface to prevent the distresses caused by oxidation.
Chip seals are generally effective in sealing fine cracks on the roadway
surface, unless the cracks are indications of structural distresses.

Preventative Maintenance Concept
100
Chip seals are not expected
to provide additional structural
capacity to the pavement,
although it appears to be a
common practice to apply chip
seals to pavements that have
structural distresses. Justification
for chip sealing as a stopgap
procedure is straightforward; it
is believed that the chip seal
will reduce the rate of further
deterioration until funds are
made available for a conventional
overlay.
