Development Series
We are excited that we can offer this series again this summer. We are going
to do it in a compressed version based on feedback from the field.
Details will come out in mid April but here are the dates and times: there will
be 30 slots for each Cohort (the same information will be presented in each
Cohort) allowing for 60 Site Coordinators to receive this training.
All sessions will run 8 am-2 pm with lunch being
provided
Cohort 2: July 20, 21,27 and 28
Cohort 3: August 4, 5, 11 and 12th

Summer Matters Training Of Trainer
(TOT) Series
This year we are offering TOT to Grant Managers, Program Directors and Site Coordinators (if they have run
summer program for at least 2 years) as we want to build capacity in the field on this important programming!
Series consists of 4 components (the 3 trainings must be taken in the order shown):
1. Summer Learning Loss and Quality Cycle; 2. Creating A Unique Summer Program Culture and 3. Quick CASP
(Comprehensive Assessment of Summer Programs) AND 4. Participation in 1 site visit utilizing the CASP (these
will be scheduled at the time of training and will occur at various locations in the county)
Staff who participate in all the trainings and site visits and conduct the following before August 15,2015 will be
eligible for a $100 stipend:*
* Conduct trainings 1 and 2 for a minimum of 30 front line staff and/or Site Coordinators who will be working at
summer programs this year
* Introduce the Quick CASP to a minimum of 30 Site Coordinators and front line staff who will be working at
summer programs this year
* Conduct a minimum of 3 site visits and complete the Quick CASP, meet with Site Coordinator and send copies
to parties identified
* Participate in an on line follow up webinar at the end of summer to provide feedback to the trainers for next
year!
Additionally, those who meet these requirements will be eligible to be considered to receive an IPad next
summer!

NEW ELWG ON DEMAND OFFERINGS!
The English Learner Work Group (ELWG) of the After School Programs Technical Assistance
Unit, Los Angeles County Office of Education, announces its availability for On Demand
Trainings.
Topics include the following:
English Learner 101: Are you new to the world of After School? Are you new at
working with English Learners? Then this workshop is for you! This session will
provide background information about English Learners and give you tips for
making After School a place where they can succeed.
English Learner 102: Do you have some experience at working with English
Learners but want to learn more? This workshop will build upon the knowledge
you already have and provide you with additional strategies to maximize your
support for English Learners in ASP.
English Learners as Young Authors: This wonderful workshop will teach you
THREE different ways to incorporate writing in your program that affirms student
voice and creativity, while building English Language skills.
Literacy Strategies for English Learners: Foster greater participation by English
Learners in your program by learning tips for vocabulary development, oral
language development, and student engagement in each of your program’s
components: nutrition/supper, physical education, homework, and enrichment.
After School English Learner Work Group Description
The After School English Learner Work Group (ELWG) is a subcommittee of the Region
11 After School Technical Assistance Center at the Los Angeles County Office of
Education. Convened in 2009, its mission is to raise awareness about how to meet the
needs of English Learners in After School Programs.
The ELWG meets five times a year following the Advisory Committee Meetings held at
the county office. In the past six years the group has hosted symposiums, facilitated
trainings, and participated in advocacy work on behalf of English Learners.
