The patented Baker Hughes StimTunnel™
targeted acid placement service stimulates
selected zones in carbonate reservoirs by
creating large, connecting tunnels from an
openhole main bore. This targeted
stimulation method delivers improved,
longer-lasting production gains with fewer
production impairments.
The combined effect of high-pressure
jetting and chemical rock dissolution in
acid generates a drilling effect that enables
the StimTunnel tool to construct secondary
tunnels away from the main bore. New tunnel
trajectory and orientation can be downloaded
from an optional memory inclinometer gauge
incorporated in the tool string.
The main advantage of the StimTunnel service
is its ability to enlarge the reservoir inflow
area of the well without having to frac the
well or use conventional downhole drilling
motors, drill bits, or expensive drilling muds.
The service uses hydrochloric acid,
which simplifies your operation by eliminating
damaging by-products, drill cuttings, or
drilling fluid management facilities onlocation: The only by-products generated by
the acid reaction with carbonates are salt,
water, and carbon dioxide, none of which
will damage the well as polymers, lost
circulation materials, and dispersants
would in a conventional drilling operation.
The StimTunnel service uses a dualknuckle tool, conveyed by coiled tubing, to
kick off from the main wellbore at the desired
target zone. The acid system exits highpressure jetting nozzles and creates

OVERVIEW
a large-diameter tunnel that typically
extends between 20 and 100 ft. (6 to 30 m)
into the formation.
Acid that leaks off during the tunnel
construction forms high-density,
interconnected, wormhole clusters deep
in the formation. The wormhole clusters
improve connectivity and increase
production. Multiple tunnels may be formed
throughout the openhole section.
Minimal surface equipment, such as a
standard coiled-tubing unit and crew,
pumping unit, and acid/mixing tank are
required to perform a StimTunnel job. No
blenders, frac equipment, or drilling rigs
are needed.
The StimTunnel service creates wormholes and tunnels that extend from the main wellbore
and significantly increase surface drainage area.
