An operator in Congo, West Africa, drilled for
more than 2 years with competitor bottomhole
assemblies (BHA). Over the course of four
wells, multiple trips, and various suppliers, the
operator experienced steerability, vibration,
and tool-failure issues. The challenge was to
find an effective balance between steering
control and drilling efficiency.
Baker Hughes recommended an integrated
solution using its Kymera™ hybrid drill bits,
AutoTrak™ X-treme™ rotary steerable system
(RSS), and CoPilot™ measurement while
drilling (MWD) system.
The Kymera bit technology combines roller
cones and PDC fixed cutters into a single,
patented design to reduce drilling time in
the most complex applications. In this case,
the Kymera bit was used to tackle high
vibration and stick-slip issues for better
speed and fewer bit trips.
The AutoTrak X-treme RSS, a breakthrough
technology that enables operators to steer
wellpaths with more power at the bit, was
used to keep the rate of penetration (ROP)
optimized during directional drilling. As an
added economic benefit, a CoPilot sub
was added to the BHA, allowing service
experts to monitor downhole vibrations
in real time.

Baker Hughes solution
Having full, two-way communication with
the steering unit, the AutoTrak X-treme
system precisely steered the highly complex
trajectory without sacrificing ROP, even
when the torque was high. Reservoir
navigation was performed and, due to
precise steering, the well’s total depth (TD)
of 9,679 ft (2,950 m) was extended by
656 ft (200 m) to a measured depth (MD)
of 10,276 ft (3,132 m).

CASE HISTORY
The combination of a well-suited
Kymera bit, additional power from the
AutoTrak X-treme system, and real-time
interpretation of the CoPilot weight-on-bit
data optimized the weight transfer to the
bit, improving ROP through through both the
12¼-in. and 8½-in. sections. The average
competitor ROP across four 12¼-in. sections
was 20 ft/hr (6 m/hr), while the Kymera
bit drilled 39 ft/hr (12 m/hr). In the 8½-in.
section, the Kymera bit drilled at a rate of
23 ft/hr (7 m/hr), beating the competitor
average of 16 ft/hr (5 m/hr) by 40%. Overall,
the Kymera bit outpaced competitor ROP on
average by more than 65%.
An integrated solution of Baker Hughes
technologies and expertise reduced bit
trips from 10 to 5 and cut nonproductive
time (NPT) by 80%, saving the operator
USD 4 million.
