The
EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH LIBRARY
40 Years of the
Scotlandville
Branch Library
The Scotlandville Branch is
celebrating 40 years of service
to the community! The branch
first opened on July 1, 1974,
on Harding Boulevard and
accommodates the Scotlandville
community with a book collection
of 100,000 volumes and seating
for 150 patrons. A unique feature
in the branch is a Black Heritage
Room that contains a special
collection of books and journals
on and by African Americans. The

75 Years of Serving Baton Rouge!
T
here were rumblings of World War
II, a new house averaged $3,800,
gas was 10 cents a gallon, Gone with
the Wind was in theaters and people
were reading popular
books like The Grapes of
Wrath or The Yearling. It’s
just possible that year,
1939, those interested were
reading those books at the
first public library in Baton
Rouge.
Six staffers greeted
patrons at the opening of
the Art Deco Library at
Laurel and 7th streets on
September 14, 1939. By
December, the Library had
3,306 registered patrons,
16,690 items in circulation
and a collection of $76.17
in fines.
My how times have changed.
Seventy-five years later, the East Baton
Rouge Parish Library has 14 branches,
including the recently opened new
Main Library at Goodwood. Although
the first Library was a bargain to
build in its day ($101,541, including
equipment), the new state-of-the-art
Main Library was built $1 million
under budget at a total $41.2 million.
It houses 140 personal computers,
a Technology Lab and WiFi service
throughout – technological advances
most people had not
dreamed possible in 1939.
We now have the
main site and 13 branches
with another planned
soon, more than 333,350
cardholders, 1.9 millionplus items in the collection
and a large staff handling
over 2.2 million visits
annually to our libraries.
What a difference from
the small collection of
second-hand books the
Library started with in
1939, growing with eight
additional library branches
within three years.
Community support of the
Library’s dedicated tax millage
has provided stable funding since
1986. Wise investing of those funds
allowed the Library Board of Control
to strategically implement a capital
improvements plan, invest in
technology and continually improve

Cazayoux Contributes
to History of Libraries
Many years ago, Associate State
Librarian Vivian Cazayoux (retired)
began working with State Librarian
Sallie Farrell to establish demonstration
libraries throughout the entire state of
Louisiana, paving the way for the strong
system of parish libraries in existence
today. That’s why it is especially fitting
that Miss Vivian toured the new Main
Library at Goodwood in late June,
bringing the Library’s history fullcircle.
Cazayoux

chosen for each age group. Cazayoux especially admired the beautiful stained
glass windows and the paper waterfall art installation of recycled magazines and
catalogs.
After the tour, Cazayoux complimented the Library staff on the design
of the building, commenting that she was very impressed with the care and
thought shown throughout the process. She said, “Wow … You’ve thought of
everything!” Chatting with East Baton Rouge Parish Library Director Spencer
Watts about the process, Miss Vivian relayed her belief that it was so important
to continue to invest in libraries. She told him most emphatically that this new
Main Library “was what was needed!”
During a June visit to the Baton
Rouge Room archives, Cazayoux
enjoyed an old Library photo
of her and others meeting with
the Library’s first director, Tillie
Scheneker, in 1959.
Cazayoux helped with the

Glen “Big Baby” Davis has partnered with the Library on literacy efforts in
recent years.
The fourth annual Booking It with Baby literacy tour runs July 10-12, and
it and the Reading Centers are a result of a partnership between the Glen “Big
Baby” Davis Foundation and the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. Los
Angeles Clipper and Baton Rouge native Glen Davis will be traveling through
his hometown via the library’s mobile unit to bring books and promote literacy
to children in the community – including several stops at local libraries. Davis
will be at the Eden Park Library at 9:30 a.m. July 10 to dedicate the first reading
center of many to be located – with a goal of one each year – at that site. He will
conduct a site unveiling and participate in a story time 10-10:45 a.m. at Eden
Park Library. A tour stop also is scheduled at 9 a.m. July 11 at the Main Library
at Goodwood.
The reading center at Eden Park will include tables, as well as smart tables

statistical data down to zipcode level or even a customized area. Multiple data
points can be layered over each other to identify patterns, as well. There also are
pre-created reports that can be quickly accessed and printed for patrons.
This is a bit different from our usual resources as this is for staff only, but
patrons can request what they would like from the Reference Desk of their local
Library branch. Staff then can research a request and print information from
PolicyMap for any patron free.

‘Zula Patrol’ and Mars Project: LASM Science Fun
The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) will be
hosting two science programs over the summer in library
branches. Branches might
have just one of the two
shows or a combination of
both shows, depending on
locations. Registration also
is required because space is
limited, so those interested
should call local branch
libraries of the East Baton
Rouge Parish Library System for more information.
The first program is from the bright orange planet Zula
in outerspace where the Zula top‑patrol originates! Based
on the No. 1‑rated NBC Saturday morning TV show “The
Zula Patrol”, the program The Zula Patrol: Under the
Weather is one of the best performing digital dome shows
of its genre. Under the Weather is designed for ages 4‑9
and their families. The second dome program from LASM
features Mars.
It’s a hands‑on experience following Carina, a young
woman stationed on Mars, as she communicates with her
brother in the futuristic red planet colony. They will “ride”
a rover across the Martian surface, learn the differences
between Earth and Mars and see what it might be like to
live and work on another planet. Experts from LASM will
guide children through the tour. This program is designed
for ages 6‑11 and their families. Programs are held every 30
minutes at each branch in a rotating cycle.
This schedule is as follows:

Bedtime Stories
Astronomical Society Returns with
Science Demos

and no directions on how
to repair things. But never
fear: Flip is fed up with the
confusion and makes a wish
on a very special star. His wish comes true when a book
light arrives to help the citizens of Nobuk by introducing
the power of reading books. Registration is required.
This 45‑minute entertaining and educating program,
which requires the participation and interaction of the
children in the audience, is scheduled:

Storytime
at the Library
Storytime gives children an excellent introduction to books and the Library, increases
their attention spans, and develops their social skills by involving them in stories, poetry,
and songs. The Children’s Services staff hopes Storytime will be an enjoyable experience
for each child, leading to a lifelong love of books and reading. You are always welcome
to attend Storytime with your child. We offer seven different Storytime formats. Since
children develop at different rates, you may talk with one of our library staff members
to place your child in a younger or older group. For more information, call your local
