In 2010, Sanderson celebrates its 150th anniversary. To mark this
significant occasion, the Sanderson studio introduces ‘Vintage
Fabrics and Wallpapers’ a revival of their most vibrant and varied
prints, embroideries and wallpapers to date. Over the last fifteen
decades this quintessentially English company has been at the
forefront of every significant movement in European decorative arts.
The designs included in the ‘Vintage’ collection date from the late
19th century through to the 1980s and each reflects the style of the
era in which it was first launched.
Over the years, Sanderson has kept record samples of every design
produced or marketed by the company since it was formed by Arthur
Sanderson in 1860. Today, the Sanderson archive is one of the most
important collections of historic textiles and wallpapers in the world.
To encapsulate such a wide time span within a relatively small range
of designs proved a challenging task for the Sanderson studio.
After much deliberation, nine printed fabrics, two embroideries and
nine wallpapers were settled on, offering a glimpse of the treasures
in Sanderson’s unprecedented archive. The final collection includes
styles from the Arts & Crafts movement, jazzy Modernes, fifties
Festival designs and Pop patterns. Sanderson has combined the
new with the old and employed contemporary printing techniques to
enhance each design, bringing a richness and originality to
these historical textiles.
The resulting collection showcases the creativity and diversity of a
remarkable design company over the past 150 years.

EARLY TULIPS
ROSLYN
Dating from 1929, this Eton Rural (see Glossary) design
has been redrawn by Claire Hart in the Sanderson studio.
The original sample shows a full arrangement of colourful
tulip heads printed with a lively textural effect. Originally the
design was printed by rotary surface machine, a method
no longer used today. The new version has been re-painted
using a softer watercolour style but retains the same delicate
composition as the original. The design is printed on fine
glazed cotton in four vivid colourways, including luscious cherry
reds and plum purples.
William Turner, one of the most eminent designers of the 20th
Century, first produced ‘Roslyn’ as a wallpaper design in 1910.
It was later manufactured as a printed fabric from the 1920s.
Originally known as ‘The Cleves’ it was part of the Sanderson
range until 1974, making it one of the company’s most enduring
designs. In the Jacobean style, Roslyn depicts a beautifully
balanced tree composition with delicate patterns of tiny flowers
or trellises. This latest version has been engraved directly from
the original fabric to retain the distinctive textures and effects. It
is printed on 100% linen in six colourways including two based

been considered extremely contemporary when first produced
and that modern quality has been enhanced in the design today.
Alison Gee, Sanderson studio artist, has repainted Tree Poppy as
a simplified and graceful composition. Printed on soft emerised
cotton, the watercolour tones are illustrated in four colourways:
cool blues, bright reds and deep aubergines.
PAGODA RIVER
‘Pagoda River’ is a very early design from the Eton Rural
collections of the 1910s and depicts a languid pastoral scene of
Chinese fishermen, pagodas and bridges. At the end of the 19th
century and into the early 20th century, Chinese and Japanese
themes were popular as products from the East became widely
available in Europe for the first time. The original fabric was rotary
block printed and the characteristics of the printing technique
have been retained in the new design. Combinations of fresh lime
and taupe, indigo and blue, shimmering red and gold create an
oriental palette on this glazed linen union print.

‘Roslyn Embroidery’, based on the same design, has areas
of pattern translated with varied embroidery stitches to recreate
the effect of a traditional Jacobean cloth. It is available in three
colourways on a cotton ground.
TREE POPPY
The 1920s Eton Rural design ‘Tree Poppy’ is an arrangement
of large scale poppy ‘rosettes’ against a tangled trail of
branches. The design, with its Art Deco style, would have

Taken from a hand blocked wallpaper printed on gold foil and dating
from 1926, ‘Primavera’ places rhododendron leaves amongst
stylised fruit and flower motifs in the distinctive Art Deco style. With
sharp edges and geometric influences, this print has been updated
in four smart, contemporary colours including chaffinch, grape &
chocolate, green & chocolate and linen & magenta.
SWALLOWS
‘Swallows’ dating from the 1930’s is a serene design of slender
swallows soaring through the open sky and exemplifies the
stylised elegance associated with this era. Printed on glazed linen
union, ‘Swallows’ has been given a contemporary touch with a
fresh lime colourway, whilst the other two colour options, pebble
and wedgwood, reflect a more soothing palette.

SQUIRREL & DOVE
C.F.A. Voysey, the famous English architect, textile designer
and associate of William Morris, created ‘Squirrel and Dove’
in the Arts & Crafts style of the time. The pattern was first
produced by Sanderson as a wallpaper in the 1890s. For this
Vintage collection, the tree motif has been printed on medium
weight cotton and afterwards embroidered with the nesting
birds and squirrels. It is available in three neutral colourways.
EGLANTINE
Designed in 1957 by the Parisian studio, Pollet, ‘Eglantine’
is a charmingly romantic composition of rose branches and
blossoms, illustrated in a loose painterly style typical of French
designs of the period. As well as reproducing the soft pink and
taupe of the original 50s sample, the design studio has also
explored other colours, a light moss & rose, slate blue & grey
and a bright royal blue with canary yellow, all printed on a fine
glazed cotton.

WEYBRIDGE
‘Weybridge’ is typical of the linen floral prints produced by
the Sanderson studio in the 1970s. The arrangement of
two country-style rose bouquets in a repeating pattern was
typical of 1970s and 1980s. This layout was commonly used
for upholstery as well as curtains with the bouquet motif
placed in the centre of the sofa cushions, giving a seating
area the 70s ‘all-over’ Bohemian feel. Printed on a cotton/
linen ground with an antique texture, this design comes in
five vintage colourways.

PALLADIO SUNFLOWER
English textile designer, Pat Albeck created ‘Palladio
Sunflower’ for the ‘Palladio Magnus 2’ collection, circa 1961.
It depicts a single sunflower stem and head drawn with the
distinctive etched cross-hatching found in old botanical
prints. The technique used is similar, but with a slightly
looser, more contemporary style. It has been printed on
100% silk in three colourways, namely ivory, gold and clay.

THE WALLPAPERS
EARLY TULIPS
‘Early Tulips’ wallpaper is printed wide-width by
gravure, which captures the fine tone work of the
tulip petal design. Four colourways coordinate with
the fabrics in cherry red and aubergines, while other
variations include neutral tones such as charcoal/opal
and silver/yellow.
EGLANTINE
‘Eglantine’ wallpaper is printed wide width by gravure in
five colourways, four to coordinate with the colours of
the fabric and an elegant silver & ivory.
ROSLYN
‘Roslyn’ wallpaper, with its distinctive Jacobean Trail

style, is printed by gravure to imitate the ‘smudged’
edge typical of surface printed wallpapers. It is available
in seven colourways, including neutral shades, such as
gold and eggshell.
SWALLOWS
‘Swallows’ wallpaper is printed in five colourways, three
to coordinate with the soft pastel tones of the fabrics
and two neutrals, silver and charcoal.
SQUIRREL & DOVE
‘Squirrel & Dove’ wallpaper is faithfully reproduced
from the original and is printed by flexo in three
colourways, including teal & red, eggshell & ivory and
red & gold.

PRIMAVERA
‘Primavera’ is taken from a beautiful wallpaper dating
from 1926.The pattern is of rhododendron leaves with
stylised fruit and flowers which was originally printed on
a rich metallic gold ground with intense cobalt leaves
and highlights of fuchsia and orange. For this collection,
it is gravure printed on wide width paper in four smart
and contemporary colourways: chaffinch, grape &
chocolate, linen & gold and green & chocolate.
PALLADIO SUNFLOWER
‘Palladio Sunflower’ wallpaper has been gravure printed
wide width in six colourways, with matt grounds in
colours such as slate blue, red, yellow, black and ivory,
together with aubergine on a gold metallic ground.
CONCORD
‘Concord’ wallpaper is a 1964 ‘op-art’ inspired design
of vertical lines converging and diverging. Optical
geometrics inspired by artists such as Bridget Riley
were typical of some of the more exciting trends that
emerged during the 60s. It was designed at the English
firm Lightbown and Aspinall by an in-house designer
and was part of the ‘Palladio 7’ collection of screen
printed wallpapers launched in 1964. For the new
collection, it is printed in seven colourways: lime & silver,
plum & teal, red & gold, charcoal & silver and grey blue
& silver, alongside two creamy neutrals.
SICILIAN LIONS
Heralded as one of the most successful Palladio
designs, ‘Sicilian Lions’ wallpaper was designed by
Robert Nicholson and dates back to 1956. This popular
pattern appeared in four successive Palladio books.
The highly stylised depiction of a lion has similarities to
heraldic motifs of the late mediaeval period, but features
a loose contemporary style. Originally screen printed,
it has been redrawn to a smaller scale and is gravure
printed in five glorious colourways, in earth tones of
olive, sundried red, charcoal black and deep teal.

GLOSSARY & TECHNICAL TERMS
Eton Rural Sanderson first manufactured and sold it’s
own range of printed fabrics in 1919. These were branded
Eton Rural as at the time companies selling both fabric and
wallpaper were rare.
Flexo or flexographic a printing process for
wallpaper that utilises a relief roller.
Gravure a technique for printing wallpaper by which an
image is engraved onto a copper cylinder and printed using
a rotary press.
Jacobean Trail Jacobean indicates the period of
English history that coincides with the reign of James VI
of Scotland (1603 -1625). The Jacobean pattern is usually
characterised by a stylised trail of leaves and birds.
Palladio Collections These were a range of
specially commissioned wallpapers by the leading designers
of the late 50s and early 60s. They were originally handprinted by the Wallpaper Manufacturers Association and
were later acquired and marketed by Sanderson. The
designs were specifically aimed at architects and interior
designers, hence their strong graphic feel.
