Dear Friends,
It is with great Easter joy that I send out this message! Despite the
impossibility, Jesus who was dead, is ALIVE! Oh, the difference that
makes for each one of us and our world today! We are Easter people and
we live with great hope for the present and the future because of the truth
of the Good News. I pray that this message finds you all in good health
and good spirits and that you are sharing that positive attitude to all you
are in contact with.
It seems to be the prevailing attitude today in the media and perhaps
even among your family and friends, to focus on the negative and to find
fault with those who profess a faith in God but may not live up to that
faith. Of course, we all know that having a relationship with God can
help us live more generously, more lovingly and more kindly but it does
not mean that we are perfect. While it is always good to live humbly,
not professing to be more than we are, it is also helpful to focus on the
positive. Saint Paul reminds us to focus on what is lovely and pure.
During this season, when the snow will soon be gone and flowers and
sunshine are on their way, I encourage you to be positive people. Share
the joy of the Good News in the way you interact with the world. We
Christians need to wear our joy as a well worn piece of clothing. When
we live our lives with joy and hope, it is infectious. Perhaps others may
want to learn more about this Good News when they see how powerfully
and joyfully it has changed us.
We are a sent people. We have been sent to our families and our
community to share the Good News. Let us all live lives that showcase
that Good News. Let us all be filled with joy for surely that is an
expression of our deep love for God.

Pastor’s Office Hours
Pastor Jackie has Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday from 9 to noon for office hours unless a
district meeting is scheduled on one of those
particular days. Most visitations occur in the
afternoons. If you would like to schedule an
appointment please feel free to call her cell

Dear Church Leaders,
On Behalf of the AUMC, I want to thank you again
for stepping forward and accepting this call to
serve our church and community in this role of
leadership. Our nomination committee prayerfully
asked you to serve because we felt you had the
gifts that would help fulfill the mission of the
church in a particular area, the leadership qualities
to prepare your committee members to serve and
the spiritual maturity to hear God’s urging. I have
not been disappointed!

Over the past many months, we have chosen as a
church to follow the goal of our annual conference
to involve our leadership team in growing as
spiritual people by immersing ourselves in some
form of Bible Study and prayer. You have all
agreed to begin your committee meetings with a
short bible verse and a discussion around what that
verse teaches us. Many of you have also involved
yourself in a formal Bible study here at the church
as well. Well done! While this practice has been
uncomfortable for many, it has allowed us to dip
our toes into the water of the Bible and hearing
God’s voice.
Now that we have gotten used to incorporating the
Bible into our committee work, I would like to
draw us closer as a community by having us all
concentrate on the same Bible passages. There is a
synergy in having the whole church community
reading and reflecting on a similar theme. We will
be seeing this with our church wide book on The
Praying Life and this is how our worship team
plans our weekly worship experiences. In fact, all
over the Christian world, we have the Lectionary, a
set of scripture readings in a three year cycle that
allows all of us to be reflecting on the same
passages at the same time each year.
It seems appropriate to begin our church wide
focus on the Call of Jesus on our lives as seen in
the four Gospels. We find the same story in
Matthew 4:18-22, Mark 1:14-20, Luke 5:1-11, and
John 1:35-53. I would like to ask each committee

to reflect upon these Gospel accounts for the rest
of the calendar year together.

the readings before them.
There are four accounts that can be read and
discussed; perhaps one each meeting. We have
been following a lectio divina method this year of
reading the passage slowly and discussing a word
or phrase that jumps out at us. You may find an
imaginative reflection also helpful. In this type of
reflection, we put ourselves into the story. Which
character seems most like us? What would we say
or do in this situation? What questions or
concerns would we ask Jesus about? How would
we feel if we were in this situation?

I See!
Often when we try to read the Bible, it seems like
Greek to us! We lack an understanding of it and
this can be frustrating! Instead of giving up, here
are a few tips to think about.
Lastly, you may get to the place of discussing how
this one event is told differently by the four
authors of the different Gospels. Why would they
see the event differently? What might have been
their purpose in writing the story in the manner
they did? What is the same and different in each
telling of the event?
When you read a portion of scripture; a parable or
a psalm try to look for the four basic keys in
reading any story. Who? What? Where? and
When? Next look at key images. Have you noticed
them in other biblical stories before? Details in
scripture are very important and the scriptures tend
to repeat certain themes, images and ideas. For
instance, when you see allusions to nature; trees,
rivers, gardens, it brings us right back to the
Creation story and the Garden of Eden. When we
make that association, new meaning can often be
found. Author, Tim Gray, reminds us when we
read scripture, we need to read slowly with a prayer
that God will help illuminate our minds. Next time
you read a passage try some of these techniques
and see what God might share!†
Please do not let this time of study and reflection
be a burden. Think of it as an adventure! Together
we are learning more about God, ourselves and
each other. Not only are we growing as spiritual
individuals, we are forming a strong bond with
each other as we explore the scriptures together.
I know I have said this before, but I would like to
say it again. I am so proud of you!! Your ability to
engage in spiritual leadership this way is a
testament to your maturity and your willingness to
be used by God for the good of our church and our
community. You have allowed yourself to be
stretched by God and I could not be more
impressed! I know that this can be a daunting task
and I thank you for saying YES to God’s call!!

Take the Paper Challenge!
One of our biggest office expenses is that of paper.
Each year, there are 10 issues of the Beacon
newsletter to be printed. It is estimated that we use
approximately 45 reams of paper (packages of
500) just to print the Beacon. So, we are
challenging each church family to donate as many
reams of paper as you can to help defray the cost of
paper, especially if you prefer a printed copy to the
eBeacon.
The following items are needed on a weekly basis:
peanut butter, toilet paper, and pasta sauce.
Please place items in the grocery cart outside the
sanctuary. If you have questions about the pantry
or wish to volunteer, please speak with Leroy
Brown or Eric Howes. Thank you for supporting
this mission and helping local people meet their
most basic needs. †
Typically, reams of 8 ½ x 11 paper cost about
$6.00 each. When you are out shopping look for a
paper bargain and take the “Paper Challenge” and
help us save! Donations may be left in the narthex
on the table. Thank you all so much for your help!!

The church spends close to $700.00 per year on
mailing the Beacon alone! Plus, the copy of the
Beacon that is emailed is in full color! So, give it
a try, won’t you? To receive your eBeacon, send

please be sure to specify this otherwise you will
be removed from the mailing list for the Beacon.

Faith Journey Collection Box
Faith Journey is supporting the Center for
Wisdom’s Women in Lewiston by having a
collection box for FULL SIZED hygiene products
for the women that they serve. You will find it on
the table in the Narthex. Thank you for supporting
this worthy cause.†

Soup labels and Box Tops for
Education.
Also, don’t forget to let us know if your
email address changes. Email the above
address to change your email for the eBeacon and
let our secretary, Joan, know so that our church
mailing list can be kept up to date. We also have
the ability to update our online directory, so keep
us posted. Each month, I get 3-4 bounces when I
send out the eBeacon. Usually, it’s because your
mailbox is full. I’m assuming you receive them as

Beginning in April, Terri Blasi will be
coordinating the Campbell's Labels and
Box Tops project for Washburn School. Members are
asked to continue supporting this educational program
for the elementary students by leaving their boxtops
and labels in the appropriate box in the narthex. A big

Malpass and Swift families and Edith Ellis for
setting up, cleaning up and preparing the delicious
Easter breakfast. Such a nice way to start the day.
Your time and effort were appreciated!
Thank you to all the Sunday School students,
teachers and families who contributed to our
Lenten offering. WE raised over $400.00 for the
Hope School in Bethlehem. This special school in
the town where Jesus was born, educates children
who have very little. Many of these students are
orphans and have to live at the school because
they have no home or family. Thank you so much
for providing for these special kids.

To come over for coffee.
Thinking of coffee will remind her she was going to have a
cup.
She will pour herself some more.
And chances are.
if she has a cup of coffee,
Her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it.

During the season of Lent you were generous to
the High Street Food Pantry; first with your
donations of specific food items for the shopping
basket each week, requested by the Missions
Committee. And then you were so generous to
the Worship Committee’s request to donate
money to the Pantry as a way to honor or
remember your loved ones with the Easter
Remembrance bulletin insert. To date, the
amount of money being sent to the High Street
Food Pantry to feed our local community’s
neediest is $910. Thank you!

Celebrating the Holy Spirit Through the Arts
We hope that you will join us for this special
retreat. There are many different gifts of the Spirit
and many ways to celebrate the gift of the Holy
Spirit. Through reflection on scripture and
exploring the work of the Holy Spirit, participants
will be invited to have fun, prayfully interpreting
ways to celebrate the Holy Spirit through arts;
dance, drama, drawing, finger painting, writing
music, fabric/visual art, and where the spirit leads.
All of our creations will be used as part of our
"Holy Spirit Party Worship Celebration" on
Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The celebration will be open
to the public. All are welcome!

Retreat Leader Rev. Heidi Chamberland has led
many retreats over her 28 year years in ministry.
She is currently on sabbatical leave after serving 8
years as the District Superintendent for the
Connecticut Western MA District. Prior to serving
as a DS, she served several United Methodist
churches in Maine. She is a creative worship
leader, with a deep sense of the Holy Spirit at
work in her life. Heidi is also trained in spiritual
direction and has been involved in healing
ministry with her husband, Rev. Joseph
Chamberland, throughout their ministry together.
She currently lives in Belgrade Lakes, Maine
where her husband is appointed as the pastor.
