Communication in the future
In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee specified the three foundation technologies of the World
Wide Web: HTML, URI, and HTTP. Things have changed quite a bit since then. By
2040, who knows what the world of communications will offer? To discuss the
possibilities, the Australia 2040 Forum will hear from three experts in the area:
Professor Mike Aitken AM, Chief Executive, Capital Markets CRC
Ms Julie Inman Grant, APAC Director of Public Policy, Twitter Australia
The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, Minister for Communications
1200–1230
Potential in the north
Australia’s North remains relatively underdeveloped representing 46% of the
nation’s total agricultural area but less than 13% of the value of agricultural
production. The region has enormous potential to capitalize on the growth of
Asia’s middle class, but many issues need to be resolved in order to make the most
of this opportunity.
Professor Arun Sharma, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and
Commercialisation), Queensland University of Technology
The Hon Warren Entsch MP, Chair of the Joint Select Committee on Northern
Australia
Luke Bowen, General Manager, Northern Australia Development Office –

The future of medical research
Australians have benefited enormously from medical research. We lead long lives,
have excellent health care and exports of pharmaceutical products are a major
contribution to the economy.
The Australia of 2040 will face new challenges in health and wellbeing.
Governments face ever increasing health budgets that are already changing
attitudes about the responsibilities for health care. Will Australians view medical
R&D as a solution to rising medical costs or as a contributor to those costs? Join
our panel of experts in discussing the coming era of health research and how it will
impact on our wellbeing.

Making it in Australia
Australia’s manufacturing sector is under increasing pressure. Is the future one

the future of making things in Australia and how do we shape that future?
