a wine that became known for sparkling sweetness in the 1970 s and 80 s, has made a great comeback in recent history in the united states and gone are the days of inexpensive, headache-inducing wines. best enjoyed with salumi and fritti, lambrusco is the name for both the region and the wine hailing from italy’s beautiful emilia-romagna. there are six main varieties of lambrusco, each producing distinctive styles of pink and red juice, ranging from dry and tannic to soft and fruity. le vigne di alice prosecco extra dry “daman” 2013 $48 Sorelle Bronca Prosecco di Valdobbiadene “particella 68” ranging from honey and mottled apricot skins to hay and sap. certainly not your typical whites, we encourage enjoying orange wines with traditional red wine foods, in a large glass, just slightly her big brother, barolo, barbaresco tends to have less aggressive tannins, and takes fewer years to age into a graceful wine. younger barbarescos will drink with more grip and dryness, while older he doesn’t conform to others’ ideas of what sicilian wine should be. he farms with respect for the natural environment and does nothing to his grapes: no sprays, no organic or biodynamic treatments, nothing. likewise in the cellar, grapes are left to ferment and make the kinds of wines they are meant to be. cornelissen’s vineyards are on the north side of mount etna in sicily, planted mostly to the local nerello mascalese variety. these are challenging, interesting, and very unusual wines. they can be cloudy, sometimes fizzy, oxidative, and tart. but they can also be supremely delicious.
