Lambrusco, a wine that became known for sparkling sweetness in the 1970 s and 80 s, has
made a great comeback in recent history in the united states and gone are the days of
inexpensive, headache-inducing wines. best enjoyed with salumi and fritti, lambrusco is
the name for both the region and the wine hailing from italy’s beautiful emilia-romagna.
there are six main varieties of lambrusco, each producing distinctive styles of pink and
red juice, ranging from dry and tannic to soft and fruity.

orange wine, golden wine, skin-fermented wine: considered by some to be the newest in
trendy wine, but recognized by many as the way white wine was made at the beginning
of time. think of these as white wines made in a red wine style. skins, seeds, and stems
co-mingle in acacia barrels, clay amphorae and steel tanks to add texture, weight, and
flavors ranging from honey and mottled apricot skins to hay and sap. certainly not
your typical whites, we encourage enjoying orange wines with traditional red wine
foods, in a large glass, just slightly cool.

nestled high in the alps, close to the
swiss and french boarders, is the vallee
d’aoste, and one of the great viticultural
researchers of the region, giulio
moriondo. his tiny winery, vinirari, is
located in his garage and is based entirely
on his passion for preserving the native
grapes of the area. moriondo’s wines are
full of vigor and ripe, bright fruit.

piemonte
barbaresco is the name of a town, a small region, and a wine, and is always made from
100% nebbiolo. a young region, barbaresco was only awarded its docg status in 1980,
although wine has been made here since the early 1900 s. unlike her big brother, barolo,
barbaresco tends to have less aggressive tannins, and takes fewer years to age into
a graceful wine. younger barbarescos will drink with more grip and dryness, while
older barbarescos will show mature notes of soft, ripe fruits and tea-like tannins.

the king of
red wines in
northern italy:
barolo. often
described as a
big wine, these
nebbiolos from
the historic town
of barolo and
its surroundings
can display
mouth-drying
tannins, but at
their heart, they
are wines with
acidity, beauty,
and elegance
with age. barolo
must be aged for
3 years before
release, barolo
riserva requires
5 years of aging,
and many need 1520 years before
they reach
their drinking
potential.

in the 1970 s chianti was made of no more
than 70% sangiovese with the requirement
that white grapes be blended in to make
bright, easy-drinking wines. at the time,
a handful of producers fought to think
outside the box, beyond the regulations
of the doc, and they created the first
super tuscan wines. some were all
sangiovese, some were blends of bordeaux
varieties, and as a result, the toscana
igt designation was established in 1992.
a revolution--wineries could now make
wines without the governance of the doc.
some of our toscana igt wines are 100%
sangiovese, some are blends, many are
from the chianti region.

frank cornelissen is one of the outliers in the world of wine. he doesn’t conform to
others’ ideas of what sicilian wine should be. he farms with respect for the natural
environment and does nothing to his grapes: no sprays, no organic or biodynamic
treatments, nothing. likewise in the cellar, grapes are left to ferment and make the
kinds of wines they are meant to be. cornelissen’s vineyards are on the north side of
mount etna in sicily, planted mostly to the local nerello mascalese variety. these are
challenging, interesting, and very unusual wines. they can be cloudy, sometimes fizzy,
oxidative, and tart. but they can also be supremely delicious. cornelissen’s style is
risky, and not for everyone, but they are a glimpse into the simplest way of making wine.
