It is the evening of the holy day, All Saints. Celebrate with your family the gift of sainthood and talk about the communion of saints. Who belongs to the communion of Saints that we declare we believe in at the end of the creed? There are three groups within this holy communion. The Saints in heaven, whether they have been canonized or not all in heaven are saints. Those of us on earth that are striving for sanctity and those in purgatory. Halloween is a victory celebration - a celebration of Jesus” victory over death and of those who follow Him on this earth and into eternity. As a young man he became a priest and returned to Ireland to convert the population to Christianity. The snakes he chased out were the false teachings they had adhered to. Reread the story of creation in Genesis and reflect on the serpent that tempted the first humans to distrust God. Advent Penance Service Date? Time?? Watch the bulletin and Web site (avemariaonline.org) for publication of the day and time for the Advent Penance Service This Penance Service is for all ages. The ideal way to teach children to celebrate the sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is to take them with you (not into the confessional however) when you go to confess. Let them know how refreshing it is to know you are forgiven and the God forgets your sin as soon as you make your penance and try to stay away of the near occasion of your temptations. Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Symbolism of the Image left on the cloak of Juan Diego. December 12 Our Lady of Guadalupe Mary appeared to Juan Diego on December 9, 1531 and left this image of her apparition on the lining of his cloak. As Juan opened his cloak roses fell at the feet of the bishop. Juan Diego was canonized in 2002 Eyes - the eyes of the Image are looking down, a position of humility revealing that as great as she is, she is not God. Indian gods never looked down, they looked straight ahead. Face - Her face shows great compassion. The Aztecs believed the face was the window of the soul. A means by which one cold read who a person was and how they would act. Hands - Mary’s hands are not in the traditional style of prayer but in an Indian manner of offering. This meant to the Aztecs that she had something to offer them. Maternity Band - around her waist was the sign of a pregnant woman about to give birth. December 25 Incarnation of Jesus Christmas Second Person of the Holy Trinity Son of God but equal to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. Reflect on the reality that God’s Son, left the peace and timelessness of heaven to become human so we would know how much we are loved. Stars - are a sign that the new era is beginning. In the Aztec understanding a new era was accompanied by a comet or body of stars. A prediction of the end of a civilization had previously been predicted. Sun Rays - recalled that the sun played a key role in their civilization but the woman (Mary) is greater than the sun. She hides the sun and only the rays peek out from behind her. Mantle (Cloak) - The predominant color of turquoise is reserved for the god Omecihuati. Supreme among their many gods. This meant a source of unity for all that exists. Moon - Standing on the moon indicates that she is great than the much feared god of night. Angel - The angel that appears to be carrying Mary in symbolizes the carrying in of a new era. Why? Because the early church fathers were defining the Trinity. If one would call Mary the mother of God there was the supposition that she was above or equal to Jesus as God. They believed that the mother was greater than the son so this made sense. However as theologians came to understand Mary’s role as one chosen by God to be the God bearer (Theotokos in Greek) they relented and they too began to honor Mary as the Mother of the Savior, Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Inquiring about the Catholic Church? January 11 Inquiry sessions begin for those who would like to have their questions answered concerning Catholic Church teaching and practices. If you, your spouse or a friend is interested in learning, in a non-obligatory, non threatening atmosphere, the RCIA Inquiry is ideal. What does the Catholic Church teach? How does the church pray? Do Catholic worship Mary or pray to the saints? Non-Catholic or unbaptized are encouraged to come. The Lord is with you.” 29But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,* and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35And the angel said to her in re- ply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived* a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;; 37for nothing will be impossible for God.” 38Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Pictures will be on the web site Pics2Prints the week after Easter. + RCIA Mystagogia Mystagogia is the last step of the Rite of Christian Initiation process. Those who entered the Church at Easter are asked by the Catholic Bishops to continue to meet weekly until Pentecost. Then monthly until the following Easter. Purpose: to become more familiar with Church teaching and ministries and find a place in the Church. Why must we go to Mass on Sundays? What does God say about participating fully in Sabbath worship and reverence? Authentic Sabbath Observance That Leads to Blessing “If you re- frain from trampling the Sabbath, from following your own pursuits on my holy day;; If you call the Sabbath a delight, the LORD’s holy day glorious;; If you glorify it by not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs— Then you shall delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will nourish you with the heritage of Jacob, your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Isaiah 58:13,14 How can one stay away from Holy Mass if he/she believes that God comes down and changes the bread and wine into the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. How can one stay away knowing the word of God is proclaimed so we lead holy lives working toward sanctity. Learning Christ Teach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle, in all the events of life in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others, in the insincerity of those I trusted, in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied. Let me put myself aside, to think of the happiness of others, to hide my little pains and heartaches, so that I will be the only one to suffer from them. Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path. Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden nor embitter me; that it may make me patient, not irritable, that it may make me broad in my forgiveness, not narrow, haughty and overbearing. May no one be less pure, less true, less kind, less noble for having been a fellow traveler on our journey toward ETERNAL LIFE. As I go my rounds from one distraction to another, let me whisper, from time to time, a word of love to thee. May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good, and strong is its purpose of sanctity. At the first Pentecost (Luke 2:1-41) after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was manifested, given and communicated as a divine Person to the Church. This was the fulfillment of the paschal mystery of Christ according to his promise. (“..I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go I will send Him to you.” Luke 16:7 See also Luke 12:12, John 3:5-8, 7:37-39 May 29 - Ascension of Our Lord Celebrate the entry of Jesus humanity into divine glory in God’s heavenly domain forty days after His Resurrection. “These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” then he opened their minds to under- stand the scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with the power from on high.” (meaning the Holy Spirit) Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.” Luke 24:44-53 RCIA First Communion Retreats All children planning to receive First Holy Communion must attend, with a parent/guardian, one of the two retreats. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen. Name the request for which you wish Mary to bring to her Divine Son . This same body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ is present in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine. (Communion) Anima Christi Prayer after Communion Prayer before the Crucifix Here, O good and gentle Jesus, I kneel before you, and with all the fervor of my soul I pray that you engrave within my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope, and love, true repentance for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment. While I see and I ponder your five wounds with great affection and sorrow in my soul, I have before my eyes those words of yours that David prophesied about you: "They have pierced my hands and feet; I can count all my bones." (Ps 22, 17) Amen. Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O good Jesus hear me; Within your wounds hide me; Separated from you, let me never be; From the evil one, protect me, At the hour of my death, call me; And close to you, bid me; That with your saints I may be praising you forever.
