Rite of Christian Initiation
Or RCIA is a process for those who are seeking the Truth. If
you are interested in understanding what the Catholic Christian Church teaches, how the church prays and remains in fellowship this is the ideal process. It is the means required by
the Church throughout the world to teach those who are interested in learning what it means to live out the Christian life
style within the Catholic Church.
RCIA process is for:
Unbaptized adults and children ages 7 and older
Baptized in another denomination
Baptized Catholics who have not celebrated
First Communion nor Confirmation

August 15 - Holy Day of Obligation
Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of Jesus, Mother of God.
“Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when
the course of her earthly life was finished, was
taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and
exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so
that she might be more fully conformed to her
Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of din and
death.” Pius XII , CCC966
What are — Holy Days, Feast days, Solemnities?
4th Precept of the Church—observance of Holy Days
Goal— to help the faithful gain “mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.”
A Holy Day of Obligation may also be a Feast day or
Solemnity. They commemorate the saving mysteries of Christ’s life which include those which commemorate Mary as the
Mother of God. CCC 2043, 2180
Feast Days help us to remember and celebrate Scriptural
events in the life of the Trinity, Mary and the Saints so their example will bring hope and influence the daily lives of the faithful. CCC 1169, 1173
Solemnity is a feast day of the highest rank . The observance
begins with the vigil on the evening before the actual date of the
feast. Unlike feast days of the rank of feast (other than feasts of
the Lord) or those of the rank of memorial, solemnities replace
the celebration of Sundays outside of Advent, Lent and Easter
Holy Days of Obligation are: All Sundays, Mary Mother of
God (Jan. 1), Easter (April 5 in 2015), Nativity of the Lord—
Christmas (Dec. 25), Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary (Aug. 15), Ascension of the Lord (May 29), All
Saints (Nov. 1)

Nativity of Mary
Angelle Schott, B.S., MASW
Mary the Mother of God is given birth by her

Upon conception Mary is immediately cleansed of
original sin by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Simeon said to Mary , “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of May in Israel and to be s sign that will be contradicted and you your self a sword shall pierce so that the
thoughts of many heats may be revealed.” Luke 2:34,35
Mary weeps for the sins of mankind for which her Son was
condemned on the Cross to redeem us.

The sacrament of Confirmation is the Second Anointing of Baptism. Since it is completing
Baptism Confirmation should not be designated as a choice since the confirmandi is already
a Baptized Catholic. The laying on of hands and anointing with oil at Confirmation brings
the gifts of the Holy Spirit upon the Candidate in order to infuse him/her with the power
and grace n3ecessasry to live out the Catholic Christian life style. The Bishop is the ordinary
minister of Confirmation. He holds for himself the privilege of conferring the Sacrament of
Confirmation for Baptized Catholics.

Halloween
Don’t let those who misunderstand Halloween make this Christian holiday fearfull. Hallow means
holy, e’en is a contraction of evening. It is the evening of the holy day, All Saints.
Celebrate with your family the gift of sainthood and talk about the communion of
saints. Who belongs to the communion of Saints that we declare we believe in at
the end of the creed? There are three groups within this holy communion. The
Saints in heaven, whether they have been canonized or not all in heaven are
saints. Those of us on earth that are striving for sanctity and those in purgatory.
Halloween is a victory celebration - a celebration of Jesus” victory over death and of those who follow Him on this earth and into eternity.

First Penance (Reconciliation) Retreat
What happens during this retreat time?
This is when the children practice making their
First Confession. A Parent or Guardian ir required to come with
them. They will practice with their parent the role of the penitent (the person who is confessing) and the role of the priest. An
opportunity to go into the confessional to become familiar.
It will be required that they memorize the act of contrition. It is
never to early to begin to pray the Act of Contrition with them as
part of night prayers - this is the ideal way to learn how to pray,
by praying with the family.
To help you begin the Act of Contrition is printed below.
Confirmation Retreat
The Diocese of Colorado Springs requires that all
Confirmandi participate in a Confirmation retreat in
preparation for celebrating the sacrament of confirmation in the spring.
For the Widowed

Act of Contrition
My God,
I am sorry for my sins
with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing
to do good I have sinned against you.
Whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with Your help, to do
penance, to sin no more and to avoid
whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ
suffered and died for us.
In His name, my God, have mercy.

Ice Cream Social Reception for the family
What is a Reconciliation (Penance) Service?
A Penance Service is an official rite of the
Church. It begins with a procession and song, Scripture readings follow with a brief homily. Sometimes
there is a prayer with an examination of Conscience
read aloud. Several priests are present who are seated
in various private locations in the church. Those who
are going to confession may go to which ever priest
they prefer. A Penance Service lasts about an hour.
People may leave as soon as they make their confession
and spend some time in Church to pray the penance
given. The sacrament Is not complete until the penance given has been satisfied.

Feast of St. Nicholas
St. Nicholas is known for chasing the snakes
out of
Ireland. As a young boy he was captured and brought
to Ireland as a slave. Ireland was a pagan country at the
time. He escaped after a few years and returned home.
As a young man he became a priest and returned to Ireland to convert the population to Christianity. The snakes
he chased out were the false teachings they had adhered
to. Reread the story of creation in Genesis and reflect on
the serpent that tempted the first humans to distrust God.

Advent Penance Service
Date? Time??
Watch the bulletin and Web site (avemariaonline.org) for publication of the day and time for the Advent Penance Service
This Penance Service is for all ages.
The ideal way to teach children to celebrate the sacrament of Penance
(Reconciliation or Confession) is to take them with you (not into the confessional however) when you go to confess.
Let them know how refreshing it is to know you are forgiven and the God
forgets your sin as soon as you make your penance and try to stay away of the
near occasion of your temptations.
Our Lady of Guadalupe
and the Symbolism of the Image left on the cloak of Juan Diego.
December 12
Our Lady of Guadalupe
Mary appeared to Juan Diego on December 9, 1531 and left
this image of her apparition on the lining of his cloak. As
Juan opened his cloak roses fell at
the feet of the bishop. Juan Diego was
canonized in 2002
Eyes - the eyes of the Image are looking down, a position of humility revealing that as great as
she is, she is not God. Indian gods never looked down, they looked straight ahead.
Face - Her face shows great compassion. The Aztecs believed the face was the window of the
soul. A means by which one cold read who a person was and how they would act.
Hands - Mary’s hands are not in the traditional style of prayer but in an Indian manner of offering. This meant to the Aztecs that she had something to offer them.
Maternity Band - around her waist was the sign of a pregnant woman about to give birth.
December 25
Incarnation of Jesus
Christmas
Second Person of the Holy Trinity
Son of God but equal to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.
Reflect on the reality that God’s Son, left the peace and timelessness of heaven to become human so we would know how much we are
loved.
Stars - are a sign that the new era is beginning. In the Aztec understanding a new era was accompanied by a comet or body of stars. A prediction of the end of a civilization had previously
been predicted.
Sun Rays - recalled that the sun played a key role in their civilization but the woman (Mary) is
greater than the sun. She hides the sun and only the rays peek out from behind her.
Mantle (Cloak) - The predominant color of turquoise is reserved for the god Omecihuati.
Supreme among their many gods. This meant a source of unity for all that exists.
Moon - Standing on the moon indicates that she is great than the much feared god of night.
Angel - The angel that appears to be carrying Mary in symbolizes the carrying in of a new era.

Holy Mary Mother of God
Holy Day of Obligation
Until the 4th century CE it was considered heresy to
speak of Mary as the Mother of God. Why? Because
the early church fathers were defining the Trinity. If
one would call Mary the mother of God there was the
supposition that she was above or equal to Jesus as
God. They believed that the mother was greater than
the son so this made sense. However as theologians
came to understand Mary’s role as one chosen by God to be the God bearer (Theotokos in Greek) they
relented and they too began to honor Mary as the Mother
of the Savior, Jesus, the second person of the
Holy Trinity.
Inquiring about the Catholic Church?
January 11 Inquiry sessions begin for those who would like to have
their questions answered concerning Catholic Church teaching and
practices. If you, your spouse or a friend is interested in learning, in
a non-obligatory, non threatening atmosphere, the RCIA Inquiry is
ideal.
What does the Catholic Church teach?
How does the church pray?
Do Catholic worship Mary or pray to the saints?
Non-Catholic or unbaptized are encouraged to come.
Inquiry continues on the 2nd. and 4th Sundays
until the second Sunday of August 2015

New Years Resolutions
A way to work on Sanctity
Do you make resolutions as the year offers a new beginning?
In what ways and areas of your life would you like a new
beginning?
Harness that desire by spending time in prayer and reflection. Ask our Lord to give you the insight to bend your will
to His and embrace the patterns necessary in order to mold
your mind and heart around a new way of being in the
world.
For your own sake and for all those with whom you come in
contact. No one changes without creating a transformation
in those around them.
Go into this new year with God’s grace and power to transform lives through prayer and grace
Hail Mary
Is a salutation that like a formal - hello - the Angel
Gabriel used the salutation when appearing to her at the
annunciation. Luke 1:26-38
Mary responded by saying—Fiat—meaning Yes, let it be
done to me according to your word. In other words, God’s will be done in me even though I do not understand or
know the outcome.
Are you willing to respond to God by praying, “Dear God, let Your will be done to me, even though I cannot know
the outcome?”

Who is eligible to prepare for
First Holy Communion?
March 5 Ash Wednesday
The first day of LENT
Pray: Daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, Divine Office (download Laudate,
or the app. Divine Office.org), Rosary, Scripture reading and
reflection.
Fast: From that which draws your attention away from the Lord, the
Church and from loving and caring for others. (Too much food, TV,
Gaming, Shopping, etc.)
Almsgiving: Give away all that is not needed. Give to food banks, Catholic
Charities, Returning God’s Gifts (www.diocs.org), etc.
Isaiah 58:6-14 - Authentic Fasting That Leads to Blessing
The fast that I choose: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs
of the yoke;; Setting free the oppressed, breaking off every yoke. … sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the afflicted and the homeless into your
house; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on
your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your
wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the
glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the
LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: “Here I am!” If you remove the yoke from among you, the accusing finger, and malicious speech;
If you lavish your food on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then your light
shall rise in the darkness, and your gloom shall become like midday; Then
the LORD will guide you always and satisfy your thirst in parched places, will
give strength to your bones And you shall be like a watered garden, like a
flowing spring whose waters never fail.

March 25 - Feast of the Annunciation
Mary said Yes, “Fiat” to the angel who Was sent by God to invite her to become the mother of Jesus, God’s Son. (Luke 1:26-38* 26In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel
was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
27to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the
house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30Then
the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31Behold, you will conceive in your
womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
32He will be great and will be called Son of the Most
High,* and the Lord God will give him the throne of David
his father, 33and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35And the angel said to her in re-
ply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to
be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36And behold,
Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived* a son in her
old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called
barren;; 37for nothing will be impossible for God.” 38Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel de-
parted from her.

throughout the world.

homily following. Litany of Saints and Blessing of the Baptismal waters comes next.
It is the traditional night for Baptisms, Professions of Faith
for those baptized in other denominations who wish to become a Catholic, then Confirmation.
The Eucharistic Liturgy and First Holy Communions are
celebrated. Communion is then distributed to all present.
Photographer—A professional photographer
will take photos of the entire Mass and all those
celebrating first sacraments. Please do not come
out of your pew to take photos. Pictures will be
on the web site Pics2Prints the week after Easter.
+ RCIA Mystagogia
Mystagogia is the last step of the Rite of Christian Initiation process. Those who entered the Church at Easter
are asked by the Catholic Bishops to continue to meet
weekly until Pentecost. Then monthly until the following
Easter. Purpose: to become more familiar with Church
teaching and ministries and find a place in the Church.
Why must we go to Mass on Sundays?
What does God say about participating fully in
Sabbath worship and reverence?
Authentic Sabbath Observance That Leads to Blessing “If you re-
frain from trampling the Sabbath, from following your own pursuits on my
holy day;; If you call the Sabbath a delight, the LORD’s holy day glorious;; If you glorify it by not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs— Then you shall delight in the LORD, and I will make
you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will nourish you with the heritage of
Jacob, your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Isaiah 58:13,14
How can one stay away from Holy Mass if he/she believes
that God comes down and changes the bread and wine into
the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, the
Son of God. How can one stay away knowing the word of
God is proclaimed so we lead holy lives working toward
sanctity.
Learning Christ
Teach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle, in all the events of life in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others,
in the insincerity of those I trusted,
in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.
Let me put myself aside, to think of the happiness of others, to hide my little pains
and heartaches, so that I will be the only one to suffer from them.
Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path.
Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden nor embitter me;
that it may make me patient, not irritable, that it may make me broad in my
forgiveness, not narrow, haughty and overbearing.
May no one be less pure, less true, less kind, less noble
for having been a fellow traveler on our journey toward ETERNAL LIFE.
As I go my rounds from one distraction to another,
let me whisper, from time to time, a word of love to thee.
May my life be lived in the supernatural,
full of power for good, and strong is its purpose of sanctity.

May 24 - Pentecost
The fiftieth day at the end of the seven weeks following Easter. At
the first Pentecost (Luke 2:1-41) after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was manifested, given and communicated as a divine Person to the Church. This was the fulfillment of
the paschal mystery of Christ according to his promise. (“..I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go I will send Him to you.” Luke 16:7 See also Luke 12:12, John 3:5-8, 7:37-39
May 29 - Ascension of Our Lord
Celebrate the entry of Jesus humanity into divine glory in God’s heavenly domain forty days after His Resurrection.
“These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets
and psalms must be fulfilled.” then he opened their minds to under-
stand the scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that
repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of
these things. And behold I am sending the promise of
my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are
clothed with the power from on high.” (meaning the Holy Spirit) Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them
he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.” Luke 24:44-53

Memorare (Latin, means Remember)
Remember, O Most Gracious virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled you
your protection, implored your help or sought
your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with
this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I
stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the
Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in
your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
Name the request for which you
wish Mary to bring to her Divine
Son .

Memorial Day
Ascension of Jesus
June 27 - Feast of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christ is Latin for Body of Christ
Pray the Rosary daily
We celebrate the Humanity and Divinity of Jesus.
The human body which the Son of God assumed
through his conception in the womb of Mary and which
is now glorified in heaven. This same body and blood,
together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus
Christ is present in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine. (Communion)
Anima Christi
Prayer after Communion
Prayer before the Crucifix
Here, O good and gentle Jesus,
I kneel before you, and with all the fervor of my soul
I pray that you engrave within my heart
lively sentiments of faith, hope, and love,
true repentance for my sins,
and a firm purpose of amendment.
While I see and I ponder your five wounds
with great affection and sorrow in my soul,
I have before my eyes those words of yours
that David prophesied about you:
"They have pierced my hands and feet;
I can count all my bones." (Ps 22, 17)
Amen.
Soul of Christ, sanctify me;
Body of Christ, save me;
Blood of Christ, inebriate me;
Water from the side of Christ, wash me;
Passion of Christ, strengthen me;
O good Jesus hear me;
Within your wounds hide me;
Separated from you, let me never be;
From the evil one, protect me,
At the hour of my death, call me;
And close to you, bid me;
That with your saints
I may be praising you forever.
Amen
