music: to write music, to perform music, to sing
music, to listen to music, and to be transformed
by music. Music is God’s idea and part of His
creative genius. He invites you to join Him in
finding joy and life in music!
Music helps us to express the condition of our
heart. My daughter, Kristen, is graduating from
Augsburg College in Minneapolis this Spring with
a major in theater. She particularly loves musical
theater and recently played the lead female role
of Julie Jordan in Carousel for her last play in
college. Kristen says, “Musical Theater is so
much fun because through music and words you
can say things that would sound silly if not put to
music. For instance, the song: “June is bustin’ out
all over, all over the meadows and the hills!” It’s
ridiculous to say those words! But when set to
music this song from the play Carousel is
perfectly acceptable”. In a similar way music puts
words to our emotions and helps us to express
our feelings whether it is joy, sorrow, reverence,
anger, love, passion, etc. Music is one of the
most important vehicles for emotional expression!

MOTHER’S DAY
Mother's Day is observed the second Sunday in May.
It is a time to honor mothers, grandmothers, and great
-grandmothers for their contribution to family and society. Since it is not a federal holiday, businesses may
be open or closed as any other Sunday.
History
Mother's Day originated from mainly two women,
Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Julia Ward sponsored Mother's Day each year in Boston around 1870
to promote pacifism and disarmament with women. It
lasted about 10 years. Anna Jarvis organized the first
Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in 1908.

Welcome New Residents
MAY DAY
May Day on May 1 is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival and usually a public holiday; it
is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures.
Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the celebrations that the day includes.

In the late 19th Century, May Day was chosen as the
date for International Workers' Day by
the Socialists and Communists of the Second
International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago. In those countries that celebrate International Workers' Day, the day may also be referred
to as "May Day" but it is a different celebration from
the traditional May Day.

ANDY ERLANDSON—APT. 336
DON & JULIA HAUBLE—APT. 123
*************
May Day was also celebrated by some early European
settlers of the American continent. In some parts of
the United States, May Baskets are made. These are
small baskets usually filled with flowers or treats and
left at someone's doorstep. The giver rings the bell
and runs away. The person receiving the basket tries
to catch the fleeing giver; if caught, a kiss is exchanged.
And to those that have
passed away

HAPPPY MAY
BIRTHDAYS
Modern May Day ceremonies in the U.S. vary greatly
from region to region and many unite both the holiday's "Green Root" (pagan) and "Red Root" (labor)
traditions. In 2006, after the passing of the "Illegal
Immigration Control Act," May Day was the date of
protests, largely around the issue of immigration reform.

MEMORIAL DAY
History
Memorial Day originated after the American Civil
War to honor both the Union and Confederate soldiers
who died in the war. The holiday was extended by the
20th century to include all American soldiers. Memorial Day is formally known as Decoration Day. This
day is not to be confused with Veteran's Day which
celebrates the service of all United States military veterans.
