Bon Air Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 2071 Buford Road N. Chesterfield, VA 23235 804-‐272-‐6228 [email protected] http://www.baccdoc.org Volume 54 No. 05 May 2015 On Pentecost Sunday, we talk about how the Holy Spirit came
like a mighty wind, like tongues of fire and amazing things happened
as the church was born. People saw the wondrous work of God
through the disciples and they thronged to the newly born church.
Where is that mighty wind? Where is that powerful spirit
working within our lives? It is still here. God’s Holy Spirit is still
working within our lives. I see it when our youth group and friends
take a Saturday morning and go work on a farm so that hungry people
will have good nutritional food to eat.
I see it when members of the church go visit those who are sick
and homebound. I see it when you make emergency hygiene kits for
those across the world whose lives have been devastated.
The story is told about a salesman who was running through an
airport to catch his flight. He ran into a young lady with a cart full of
apples; apples flew everywhere. He started to keep running but then
decided he needed to go back to help her. He found her crying and
discovered she was blind. He could see that many of the apples were
bruised, so he put them in a bag and gave her $50.
As he began to walk away, the blind girl called out to him,
"Mister, are you Jesus?" He turned around and said, "No, I am not
anything like Jesus." The girl gently nodded: "I only asked because I
prayed for Jesus to help me gather the apples. He sent you to help.
Thank you for hearing Jesus, Mister."
Thank you for hearing Jesus, dear friends. Thank you for the
many ways you allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through you. The
mighty wind of God still comes – every time we share the gifts God
gives us. Breathe in the fresh breath of God’s Holy Spirit and feel
renewed, refreshed and reborn as God fashions us into his church.

Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will celebrate the 2015
Pentecost Offering on May 17 and May 24. The theme for this year’s
special offering is “New churches are growing in the light.” The
theme focuses on Disciples making great progress in starting new
churches throughout the United States and Canada, despite expert
opinions that the Church is dying.
In 2001, the Disciples introduced the 2020 Vision to start 1,000
new churches by 2020. Since that time, 850 new churches have been
started. As result, Disciples have shared the gospel with more than
60,000 individuals, who may not have had a relationship with God.
The Pentecost Offering supports the Disciples new church
movement by making it possible for the Church to recruit, assess, train
and coach new church leaders. One half the offering is dedicated to
the respective Region or Area where the offering is taken, while the
other half is used by Hope Partnership to support new church ministry.
A gift to the Pentecost Offering supports the new church
movement and helps new church pastors develop clear vision for their
ministry. Please give generously.
Thank you Note from Habitat:
Dear Pastor Stratton:
Thank you for your donation of $750.00 for Habitat Powhatan.
We couldn’t accomplish our mission of building and preserving
affordable housing in Powhatan County without donations like yours.
Sincerely,
Terry Paquette, Executive Director
To the Pastor and People of Bon Air Christian Church:
On behalf of the Todd family, I would like to thank you all for the
lovely azalea sent in memory of our dear mother. I’m certain that my

we all. I loved the fuchsia blooms, a color which had a special
significance to Mama. (Get Jerrell to explain). May God bless you
all.
Yours in Christ,
Sharon Todd Gebman

Sunday, May 24th is Pentecost
Pentecost Sunday marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended
on the Apostles. Pentecost launches the large-scale spreading of the
Gospel after Jesus’ ascension. Acts 2:41 records that after Peter spoke
to the crowd after receiving the Holy Spirit, some 3000 people were
baptized. The Pentecost is also known as the birthday of the church.
Be sure to wear red that Sunday which symbolizes the fire of the
Holy Spirit. All children are invited to meet at the sanctuary doors at
the front of the church before the service starts. They will help us
celebrate Pentecost in a special way.

Library Corner
Here are some books you may want to read from our library:
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the
unlikeliest of places: a city bus. "The days are long, but the years are
short," she realized. "Time is passing, and I'm not focusing enough on
the things that really matter." In that moment, she decided to dedicate
a year to her happiness project.
In this lively and compelling account, Rubin chronicles her
adventures during the twelve months she spent test-driving the wisdom
of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular
culture about how to be happier. Among other things, she found that
novelty and challenge are powerful sources of happiness; that money
can help buy happiness, when spent wisely; that outer order
contributes to inner calm; and that the very smallest of changes can
make the biggest difference.
Glimpsing Heaven: The Stories and Science of Life After
Death by Judy Bachrach
If you caught a glimpse of heaven, would you choose to come
back to life? Investigative journalist Judy Bachrach has collected
accounts of those who died and then returned to life with lucid, vivid
memories of what occurred while they were dead, and the conclusions
are astonishing. Clinical death—the moment when the heart stops
beating and brain stem activity ceases—is not necessarily the end of
consciousness, as a number of doctors are now beginning to concede.
Hundreds of thousands of fascinating post-death experiences have
been documented, and for many who have died and returned, life is
forever changed. These days, an increasing number of scientific
researchers are turning their studies to people who have experienced
what the author calls death travels -- putting stock and credence in the
sights, encounters, and exciting experiences reported by those who
return from the dead. Through interviews with scores of these “death
travelers,” and with physicians, nurses, and scientists unraveling the
mysteries of the afterlife, Bachrach redefines the meaning of both life
and death. Glimpsing Heaven reveals both the uncertainty and the
surprising joys of life after death.
Acolytes Signup
If your child is interested in serving our church as an Acolyte,
the signup calendar is on the bulletin board near the church office. If
you are serving as an Elder, Deacon, Greeter, Lay Leader or Worship
& Wonder helper that would be a great Sunday to consider having
your children/child serve.
You may also sign up on the acolyte schedule online by using the
following link to the signupgenius:

On Sunday May 3rd at both services we show our appreciation
and gratitude to our Sunday school teachers, Youth Group Leaders and
Worship and Wonder Coordinators. Please be sure to join us to help
celebrate their work.
Our heartfelt congratulations go out to
those who were baptized during Holy Week.

Madison and Schyler Fearnley were also baptized on Palm Sunday.
Emily Rucker, Zachary Brink, Braxton Mooney, Parker Landergan,
Brooke Bingenheimer, Bryahna Mooney and Sarah Spencer Lehan
were all baptized on Easter. Anika Tejnecky who had been baptized
earlier and Ben Carter who was previously baptized were also in the

Christian foundation and for the Sunday School teachers and Youth
Group leaders who have also help nurture them in their faith. We
extend our appreciation to all who served as mentors to our youth
during the pastor’s class: George Smith, Pete Landergan, Diane Clark,
Andee Kirk, Joan Mielke, Cecelia Andrick, Cindy Landergan, Sarah
and Andy Trezza, Caroline Brink and Robin Blanchard. You have all
added to the joy of our Easter celebration.
We are grateful to all the folks who helped make Lent and Easter so
special. We are thankful for those who participated in our Chain of
Prayer. Our thanks also goes out to Gail Macfadden for leading the
Good Friday Worship Service; to Sandy Logan, who decorated the
cross with flowers and who along with Jean Dowdy helped decorate
for the sunrise service. We thank those who made bread for the
special services: Peggye Alcoke, Diane Fernley & Roxie White.
