White Pines Middle School 1400 Griffin Street • Grand Haven, MI 49417 616.850.6300 • www.ghaps.org Mike Shelton, Principal April 28, 2015 Dear Parent of a Fifth Grader: As part of the 5th grade Michigan Model Health program, 2 videos: “Boy to Man” and “Girl to Woman”, are shown to 5th grade students. This third edition of the videos answers the difficult questions boys and girls ask themselves as they go through puberty. The films are followed by a discussion period. Our 5th grade teachers will show the film and conduct the discussion. We will have female staff members with the girls, and male staff do the same with the boys. We share a traditional commitment to help young people develop positive attitudes toward themselves early in life. Reinforcement of these attitudes is especially critical during the transitional years of puberty when rapidly occurring physical and emotional changes often result in confusion and misunderstanding. We will be showing the videos at different times depending on the team. May 8 – Eling/DeWys Team, Pellegrom/Balsam Team and Chittenden/Mulder Team and Baker/Baker Team May 15 – Schiller/VanHoef Team, N.Tiefenbach/Klomparens Team and Westerman/T.Tiefenbach/Harsay Parents are welcome to preview the films the evening of May 4th in the Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. Please complete the form below if you do not want your child to participate in this lesson. Parents play a major role in the developmental process and youngsters look toward parents for guidance and support.
