Sugar prices fell on ICE (-1%), but remained stable on LIFFE (0%). Cocoa bean prices
fell on LIFFE (-1%), but were stable on ICE (0%). Cocoa powder prices rose (+1%),
but cocoa butter fell (-5%), due to lower grindings in the EU and North America
in Q1 2015.
Oils & Fats
European vegetable oil prices have been affected by the weak EUR in the past
month, making exports cheaper and causing demand to increase. Soyabean oil
prices rose in Rotterdam (+1%). Palm oil prices fell in Malaysia (-1%) and Rotterdam
(-1%) but remained stable in Indonesia (-0%) due to high stocks. Palm kernel oil
prices rose in Rotterdam (+3%).
Rapeseed oil prices rose in Canada (+3%) and Rotterdam (+2%), due to forecasts of
lower rapeseed levels planed in Canada. Prices for sunflower oil rose in Rotterdam
(+4%). Coconut oil prices rose in Rotterdam (+1%), but remained stable in the
Philippines (-0%). Extra virgin olive oil prices rose in Jaen, Spain (+2%), but fell in
Lecce, Italy (-1%), following concerns about the spread of the Xylella fastidiosa
bacteria and the felling of olive trees in Italy.
Grains
Milling wheat prices fell in UK (-6%), on CBOT US (-5%), and on Liffe Paris (-3%).
Oats prices fell on CBOT US (-7%).

Almond prices have continued to fall in the US (-2%), despite concerns with the
ongoing drought, whilst prices rose in Spain (+5%). Hazelnut prices fell last month,
on average, in the EU (-2%), caused by a decline in demand. Peanut prices fell in the
EU (-6%). Dried apricots in Turkey fell (-6%). Turkish raisins and sultanas were stable but
heavy overnight frosts in Turkey, in the last few weeks, have caused some concerns for
the new season crops and spot prices are already on the increase.

For spices, black pepper rose in South Asia (+5%), mainly caused by heavy rainfall in
the major producing regions. In India, the majority of spices saw price rises last month.
Indian garlic prices continued to decline (-6%), while Indian ginger rose (+2%). Poppy
seed prices in Germany fell (-3%).

Vegetables
Potato prices in the EU have gone up (+7%), with increases seen in the UK (+9%).
Potato production in 2014 is estimated to have risen by 10% y-o-y for the five
major producing countries within the EU. Onion prices started to rise, with
increases seen in Germany (+22%) and Netherlands (+55%). 2014 onion production
in the EU has been estimated just below 6m tonnes, up 5% y-o-y.

Milk & Dairy
European milk quotas ended in April, thus, production is likely to increase in the
next few months. EU butter prices fell (-4%), with prices in the UK (-6%). SMP prices
decreased in the EU but prices rose in the UK (+17%). Cheddar cheese prices were
balanced (0%), with marginal increases seen in the UK (+1%).
EU egg prices fell (-5%), and processed egg prices in the EU also fell (-7%), driven mainly
by the liquid yolk price falling (-14%), caused by increased supply.
Energy
Brent crude oil prices on ICE London rose (+11%), driven by a lower than expected
increase in US inventory supplies. The conflict in Yemen has also raised concerns of
supply disruptions from the Middle East.

Investors in People
I wrote last month about BAKO North Western’s Apprenticeship Scheme and its commitment to
providing jobs to young people. This month I wanted to concentrate on the company’s overall focus
on staff and retaining the best people possible to deliver you great products and a great service.
In recent months, in order to implement best practice in people management at BAKO North Western, the process of
becoming accredited as Investors in People (IIP) was undertaken. Having this accreditation has a number of benefits for the
business including feedback on its training and development plan, increasing staff morale, gaining a nationally recognised
award which can help with networking and gaining business through the bids and tenders process.
A committee of people from across the business including Accounts, Quality, HR and Logistics began the process of looking
inwardly on ourselves as a company and reviewing what we already do as a business against the IIP framework. It was
identified that BAKO North Western already met a great deal of what the framework required in order to gain accreditation,
the key was to publicise this. A large part of this was communicating to staff and helping them to understand the company’s
core values and the policies we have in place in order to develop and manage a culture of improvement.
A process of awareness training was undertaken with key information
about IIP and the framework publicised across the business, articles
in our internal publication ‘INSIGHT’, in company emails and our
Employee Forum members giving presentations at staff briefings.
An area on our internal intranet was dedicated to IIP and displayed
information about IIP and our own policies. A quiz was held for all
staff to enter, with prizes available for all who entered.
During a gruelling 3 day accreditation process, more than 20
members of staff were interviewed by IIP Assessor, Joanne Hamilton.
These people were chosen by Joanne and ranged from staff that
had been with the business for more than 20 years, to those who
had been with us for less than 6 months. Following the assessment,
Joanne stated that what really shone out through the entire
interview process was our consistent approach, our core values of
delivering an outstanding service to our customers and our drive to
deliver continuous improvement, not only for our customers but
both in the development of our staff and our processes. Our newer
members of staff also extolled our virtues when comparing us to
previous employers – a high praise indeed!
Joanne confirmed that not only had we gained standard
accreditation, we have achieved the bronze level accreditation,
a fantastic achievement which cements BAKO North Western as a
superb employer with the talent and vision to improve its business
and staff and serve its customers to the highest standards. We will
shortly receive a full report from Investors in People along with a
continuous improvement plan which will help us to maintain our
culture to lead, manage and develop our staff.
A review in 18 months time and a further assessment in 3 years will
tell us how we’re doing…so watch this space!
