General Information
Ball’s Falls Conservation Area is a 278 Acre Conservation Area on the Niagara Escarpment with trails,
historic buildings, two waterfalls and picnic facilities. The Centre for Conservation features an orientation
gallery and supplementary education programs. This facility also offers classroom space for rent. The
Field Centre classroom, Barn, and Pavilion may be reserved in advance at an educational rate. You may wish
to rent indoor space in lieu of picnicking in the colder months. Our education programs meet curriculum
requirements and provide students with many fun, interactive learning adventures!

Follow Our LEED®
It’s a Bee’s Life
January to June, 2015 for Grades JK-12
April to June, 2015 for Grades 1-6
The Centre for Conservation is a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) building with gold certification. This program includes a tour of the Centre
and students will develop an understanding of green building techniques and
technology. Younger students will understand what a LEED® building is, how it works
and what makes this facility sensitive to our environment. Older students will gain
insight into the environmental concerns facing our world and how buildings such as
this can be part of the solution.
Be entomologists for the day! Discover the world of bees in this hands-on curriculum
based program. Students will explore the lives of bees, their benefits to humans, and
what they can do to save the bee!
Max group size: 30 students
Duration: 1 hour
Fee: $5.00 per student
SPHAGNUM P.I. – The Case of the Stray Squirrel
Available year-round for Grades 3 - 5
In this environmental scene investigation, (ESI) students will put their sleuthing skills
to the test! This program challenges students to work together in groups to
discover why Flying Squirrels are disappearing from the Conservation Area, and all
over Ontario. By looking at plant material, maps, squirrel habitat documents, and
resources they are hot on the trail of discovery!
Max group size: 30 students
Duration: 2 hours
Fee: $5.00 per student
Take a Hike!
Year round for Grades 1-12
A guided nature hike geared to your grade level will introduce students to the geology
of the Niagara Escarpment, the unique Carolinian Forest, and the Twenty Mile Creek.
Topics may include habitats, human interaction with the environment, the industrial
era and native and invasive species.
Max group size: 40 students
Duration 2 hours

Orienteering – Try our orienteering course!
May to October, 2015
This course was designed for students to develop mapping skills by identifying
landmarks and navigating different types of terrain. NPCA staff set up the course.
Control points are located throughout the park. Schools are provided with necessary
maps and suggested rules of play. Teachers must direct and implement the program.
We recommend that teachers visit the site prior to the program.
Fee: $4.50 per student
Cultural Programs
Journey to Glen Elgin
May and June, September and October, 2015 for
Grades JK - Grade 12
We recommend this guided tour as an introduction to the history of Ball’s Falls for
all grade levels. The tour is geared to your grade and will introduce students to the
site, which was one of the first communities established along the Twenty Mile
Creek. Students will learn about early domestic life and the industrial era of Glen
Elgin. Tours include visits to the Grist Mill, Cabin, Blacksmith Shop, and Lime Kiln.
Concepts introduced during this tour are explored more extensively during our other
interactive programs.

Ball’s Falls Rocks!
Max group size: 30 students per session.
Duration: 45 minutes to 1½ hours, as required,
to accommodate your schedule.

Spring Awakening
May 21 to June 27, 2015 for Grades 4-6
We have an identity crisis! What kinds of rocks are underneath us? In this hands-on
program, students will test and identify characteristics of the Niagara
Escarpment rocks. Students will gain an understanding of how sedimentary rocks
are formed.
Max group size: 30 students
Duration: 1 ¾ hours
Fee: $5.00 per student
Amazing Amphibians
April to June, 2015 for Grades 1-4
Step into the world of Amphibians at Ball’s Falls Conservation Area! Investigate
our ponds, under rocks, and in our forests for frogs, toads, and even salamanders!
Explore the life cycle of amphibians, and the impact that humans have on amphibians!
Max group size: 40 students
Duration: 2 hours
Fee: $5.00 per student
May 21 to June 27, 2015 for Grades 1 - 4
During this interactive curriculum-based program, students experience the lives of
pioneer children by participating in a variety of seasonal pioneer chores, which may
include: baking bread in an outdoor bake oven, churning butter, quilting, assembling a
timber frame and ploughing. Students will leave with a pioneer craft they have created.
Max group size: 30 students
Duration: 2 hours
Fee: $5.00 per student
