School personnel are often the first to recognize children who are
experiencing disruption in their worlds. Knowing how to intervene
and knowing the signs of loss, trauma, or violence are important.
Loss often leads to the unexpected role of a relative having to
become a caretaker. Relatives include grandparents, aunts and
even siblings. Discussion will look at what this “new family”
means to the child and to caretakers.
