ST. PATRICK’S DAY AROUND THE WORLD
Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially
throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. Although North
America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many other locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore and Russia. In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day was traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws
mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest
in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world. Today, approximately 1 million people
annually take part in Ireland ‘s St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, a multiday celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions and fireworks shows.

Spring will be in the air shortly, March 20th this
year. I am personally looking forward to the
warm spring air and the fresh flowers blooming
shortly. This winter has been a cold one for
sure, in fact the Rideau Canal Skate way broke a
record for the longest consecutive days open,
the record was broken on Wednesday February
25th being open 47 days and counting.
March is the month for the Irish looking
forward to many Irish events, we will be
enjoying the sounds of Robin Averill a local
Ottawa Valley celebrity on Monday March
16th, and having Irish dancers in on the
morning of St. Patrick’s Day.
Thank you to all the residents and families who
joined us at the Winter Wonderland Party, it
was a great time, everyone was dancing, going
on sleigh rides, and just
having a great afternoon.
Our new bus is in, and so proud to have a our
very own resident to be the face of our bus,
how cool. Just a reminder in order for the bus
to depart on outings, lunches or shopping trips
the bus must have a least 5 members of
Barrhaven Retirement Community boarding.
Reminder Call for all outing will be placed the
evening before the trips.

Hello All Residents
We are excited for the first day of Spring coming
soon. Housekeeping will be planning spring
cleaning for April. Just a reminder there will be a

Three months into the year!
Can’t wait till spring! It has been a very long and
cold winter.
March brings St. Patrick’s Day and March break
for the children. With so much happening, it
will be April in no time!
I would like to welcome Joanna Browne our new
receptionist. She comes to Barrhaven with
many years of reception and office management
experience, the last couple of weeks have been
a delight, I look forward to many many more.
Our mandatory training for staff has resumed,
monthly you will see staff doing training in the
board room. As part of RHRA requirements,
staff are expected to receive training on certain
topics. Staff have the option of receiving the
training online or doing it in a class room setting.
I encourage residents and families to attend our
monthly Food for Thought and Resident Information meetings, the dates are posted on the
monthly calendar.
As always, my door is always open, I look forward to our chats.
Jennifer Hess
General Manager
Hi everybody,
It is Rekha from the dining room. I think everybody has
just one question on their minds these days - will winter ever end? Apparently the last time we had such
cold weather was in 1888 (whew) Hopefully March
will bring better days.
At the dining room we have had to make minor changes because of the outbreak but I am sure we will get
back to our normal routine fast. You will be seeing a
couple of new hires and I am sure they will help
us make your dining experience as enjoyable as ever.
Please stay warm. See you in the dining room. Rekha
