As soon as we are able to safely open those areas, I will let you all know. We are proud that we are continuing our support of the Barrington High School sailing team this spring. Now that dad is home from Florida, it is time to get back to work on Ballerina. With the club opening a month away, we need to get moving. While my project of stripping, staining, and varnishing her rig never seemed to happen, I was able to move the project forward. My brother Steven found a listing for a beetle cat rig for sale in the paper. $150 later, I am the proud owner of a ready to go set of mast, boom, and gaff. I am not sure dad is going to allow the use of my find, but a backup is always good to have. Next step is to flip her over and start working on the bottom and painting the hull. I hope we are able to share her with you all at the club opening. See you around the boatyard!!! The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is proud to KICK-‐OFF the 2015 Sailing Season with Legendary Sailor Gary Jobson* *(Award winning sailor and commentator Gary Jobson will speak about a look back on the history of the America’s Cup, with special focus on last year’s America’s Cup, Ocean Racing, Speed Sailing, and of course some favorite sailing stories and videos!) Don and Michelle Hamilton were our guest chefs on Friday Feb 27th cooking a delicious lasagna dinner. Rob & Brenda Migliaccio served spaghetti and clam sauce dinner that was delicious on Friday March 20th. Is it Spring yet? Is it really here? Is it going to stay? One thing is for sure - STP registration went off like without a hitch! We are filling many of our classes, and our race teams are packed with some of the best talent on the bay. Be on the lookout in the coming week for confirmations of classes. If you have not signed up yet it is not too late. Friday night club nights and guest chef nights are a relaxed and fun way to get club members, family and friends together. Check the BYC weekly blast for upcoming guest chefs and club night menus. A big thank you to Lisa Demers for coordinating the Friday night guest chef dinners and club night dinners, it has been a great season with more to come. The Wine and Food Pairing event took place on Thursday March 5th; there were 3 delicious courses with 2 wine pairings for each course followed by a wonderful dessert. Sixty five BYC members and friends enjoyed a wonderful night thanks to Tony and Lisa Demers who were the chefs and wine experts for the evening. Upcoming social committee events for spring 2015 include the BYC Opening on Saturday May 2nd. Please check you BYC Social and Event calendar card and website for other upcoming events. SAVE THE DATE: New Member Party Saturday, May 9, 2015 6:30-8:30 > BARRINGTONYC.COM Our program is shaping up to be bigger and better than previous years, and we are all excited for this coming season. The Committee has worked very hard to bring the best coaches and instructors on the bay together in order to best serve our membership. Do you have an Opti in the garage taking up valuable space? Reclaim that space (at least for the summer) and consider selling or renting that boat to an STP student or family. Feel free to post a flyer on the club bulletin board or email a listing to [email protected] and we will help you reclaim the space in the shed. The Women Teaching Women program has been hard at work putting together an exciting schedule for the 2015 season. Keep an eye out for more information and dates in the coming editions of the Line. Also, be on the lookout for the very popular Power Squadron safe boating course which the STP Program is planning to sponsor this Spring. We are planning an exciting Spring shoulder season starting in Mid to late-May. Check back next month for details. Finally, keep an eye on the harbor this Spring as the Barrington High School Sailing Team returns to the water. I am very excited to see this group back with the majority of the team coming from BYC roots. And yes, Spring is finally here! 4 BARRINGTON YACHT CLUB April 2015 Marina Project photos courtesy Bob Anderson & Matt Mitchell > BARRINGTONYC.COM 5 BARRINGTON YACHT CLUB April 2015 Marina Project Update Bob Anderson, Vice-Commodore We’ve got Pilings, Docks and Underpinnings for the Clubhouse! Those of you who have ventured to the BYC during the past few weeks will share my enthusiasm for the increasingly apparent progress on all fronts. A month ago we were concerned with chopping down the snow pile at the corner of Barton Avenue to allow the float delivery trucks to make the corner, and we were digging member Sunfish out the snow piles in preparation for Spring Frostbiting. But with the slight improvement in the weather, the rate of progress has improved significantly. Atlantic Construction has increased the size of their crew and with increasing daylight, has lengthened their workday and added a few Saturdays to compensate for time lost earlier to the bad weather. Workers have been able to excavate under the Clubhouse, form and pour the 20+ new encapsulated pilings and patch the 20+ pilings and sections of damager foundation wall. This work was supervised by Jim Jackson of the MaGuire Group, who completed the original Engineering assessment back in 2010. With the new pilings installed around the front deck perimeter a few weeks ago, this phase of the project has now been completed. For construction purposes, we divided the marina docks into four stages. “A” Docks are out in front of the pool, “B” docks are in front of the Clubhouse, “C” Docks are our Middle Marina and STP floats, and “D” Docks are the entire > BARRINGTONYC.COM South Marina. The “A” docks were completed last week, and as of this morning (Friday 3/27), the final piling of the “B” docks was drilled and socketed and hydraulically hammered into position. This completes about half of the 68 pilings and half of the floats. Starting Monday, 3/30, our Electrical Contractor (Madden Electric) will begin installing the power pedestal (which were delivered last week and stored in the Clubhouse) and the Fuel Ve n d o r ( R I H yd ra u l i c s) w i l l s t a r t t h e replacement of the fuel lines which were removed from under the Clubhouse and down the main float at the start of the project. The Dock shed, which was constructed by Atlantic Marine at their shop in Westerly, will be delivered this week, and assembled on the float in preparation for the wiring and fuel. Also this week we will get the balance of the greenheart pilings delivered, and by the end of the week we should receive the final deliveries of floats from Sullivan for the South Marina. Back on land, the Clubhouse front entryway will receive a major facelift, including new Ipe decking and posts, and stainless steel wire midrails. The side entrance near the ice machine will follow next, and finally the major portion of the front deck will receive Ipe decking and rails. After this work, in about three weeks, we will be able to safely open up the Williams Room and use the front deck again. 6 BARRINGTON YACHT CLUB MARINA PROJECT, CONT. April 2015 Notice to BYC Slip Holders Scott Nichols, General Manager As the activities pick up around the Club, the contractors have been encouraged to keep the construction area clean and safe, and minimize their footprint on the property as they progress towards the South Marina. I encourage the Members to be similarly cautious. We have arranged for our Landscaping Contractor to prepare to do the final clean-up once the heavy equipment is moved off site, starting in very late April. Our plan is to have the Marina open and available for Member boats as they are launched beginning in early May. Lots to do before then, but we are increasingly confident. Please contact any of us with comments or questions. Bob Anderson, for the Marina Committee - Ben Chwalk, Oliver Tutt, Mike Keyworth, Commodore David Materne, Bob Manchester, Lou Massa and John Ratcliffe > BARRINGTONYC.COM With the planned completion of our marina slated for later this spring, the new design will allow the club to accommodate a wider variety of vessels and provide more opportunity for the membership to enjoy the local waters. This reconfiguration allows the club to now be able to follow the “Best Use” policy within our marina perimeter. This will be evident with the relocation of dinghy docks, ramps, sail training floats and a newly designed center marina. Every effort was made to keep existing boat owners in similar size slips and locations. If a particular slip was no longer available in the new layout (e.g., removed, changed), the existing slip holder was assigned a slip appropriate to the length in another location in the marina. Slip assignments were made with consideration of safety, dock configuration, boat size/draft/ navigation/etc., operating characteristics of the vessel and ability of the boat operator. This being said, some members were impacted by the change. Management will make every effort to accommodate boat owners and recognizes that though the new marina will address most prior issues, some challenges will remain. Club Management will communicate slip locations in April with boat owners. 7 BARRINGTON YACHT CLUB April 2015 Ipe wood planks destined for the Clubhouse front Completed pier for mid marina One of the "C" dock floats staged for the water Final "D" dock piling New Clubhouse footings and pilings New Clubhouse footings > BARRINGTONYC.COM 8 BARRINGTON YACHT CLUB > BARRINGTONYC.COM April 2015 9 BARRINGTON YACHT CLUB April 2015 Cruise Bob Mattaliano, Chair Snowflakes! Are you kidding? By this time of year on the weekends, Stanley’s is starting to look busy. Not quite the beehive of activity we see in May, but definitely some action. Not very much this year. So far. But snow today? Give us a break! Maybe it’s my comeuppance for taking down the guide sticks at the end of the driveway and along the street. You know the ones; to help the snowplow drivers find the lawn and the mailbox. It’s been a winning strategy for years. That seasonal excitement has to come to an end sometime, so yesterday away with the sticks. Today, we have snowflakes. OMG. And, the forecast is for 1-3 inches. Oh, please. So, here’s my strategy. Ignore it. Totally. Don’t even look out the window. Pretend it’s sunny and warm. Look at some navigational charts. Read past issues of the Line. Think about how great it will be when the boat is in the water. And in her slip in the new BYC marina. Being aboard with friends and a favorite libation. Off cruising. Hey, the Club opening is in a few weeks, and time flies. All good. And for tomorrow? I’m going to the boatyard. Spring is upon us, and we must behave accordingly! “Almost there, it won’t be long now” Next month we’ll actually begin the BYC Cruise season. This beats the heck out of just talking about it! At the end of May, we have two Cruise sponsored events organized together with our dear friends on the Social Committee. On Friday night May 16’th, please join us for a grilled steak dinner at the club. Bring the kids and your appetites. Hear about the upcoming cruise season. Swap stories about > BARRINGTONYC.COM past adventures. Exaggerations included. Last year we really had a blast, literally. Remember the electrical power outage? Plenty of propane though. Thanks Scott. Great turnout, great food, lots of fun by battery powered candlelight. This year will be even better. I predict the power will stay on! Next up will be the Spring Cruise to Wickford May 23-25 (Memorial Day is the 25’th). If you're coming by boat, please don't forget to make slip reservations. Please call the Wickford Marina @ 401-294-8160 to reserve or online at http://www.wickfordmarina.com/. For those coming by other means, don’t forget the all hands dinner on Sunday May 24’th over at the Wickford Yacht Club. Chef Kenny Marcil and the crew will once again make magic in the galley. That’s right, a feast. Come on down. It’s a great meal, with great friends, at a wonderful venue. Reservations will open in April. Keep a weather eye on the eBlast announcements and the BYC webpage for more details.
