It is hard to believe that today is the Spring
Meeting and tomorrow is the opening. Scott Nichols and his
staff are hard at work getting the club in Bristol condition.
The marina project is nearing completion and is looking
better than I ever imagined. As I visit the club every day
(maybe twice), the progress is noticeable.
All of the committees are hard at work getting ready for the
upcoming season. STP registration is filling up and the new
STP dock layout will be an amazing platform for all our junior
sailors. Soon we will be opening up the recently overhauled
pool and dusting off the bumper pool tables.

June Tent Event
On a personal note, I just returned from Charleston Race
Week, racing on Steve Thurston’s Mighty Puffin with an all
BYC crew. The team of Steve Thurston, me, Ben Chwalk,
David Norton, Donn Hamilton, Ian Hopkins, and Bob Malcolm
tied points for second place and ended up third after the tie
breaker. It was great to be back on the water and represent
BYC for our 6th time at Charleston Race Week.
Ballerina and dad are on a final push for the opening. After
we flipped her over he found some fiberglass damage around
the centerboard trunk. Unfortunately I was at Charleston
Race Week and left him to work alone. Upon return I found
that dad had somehow glassed the entire INSIDE of the
centerboard trunk, so we were good to go. I feel guilty for
bailing on him, but Charleston was a great time!!!!!

FROM THE COMMODORE, CONT.
As I mentioned last month, while I found him new spars, he was going to use the old ones. I just left
his house and tomorrow will be the final varnish coat, and they look amazing.
The first photo below is dad adding a final coat of epoxy on the bottom. This was followed by two
coats of barrier coat then two coats of bottom paint. That day started at 6am and finished with the
final coat at 10pm. The push was on to get her done. Then dad spent a few days priming and
painting her sides. The second picture below is after we put the rub rail back on, ready to be flipped
tomorrow.
The mad rush starts as we have to get her ready for the opening. The centerboard has to be put in
and the final paint on the rudder. The rigging is almost done and she should be at the dock on
Saturday for the opening. She will have to come back out to finish the varnish and to bung the rub
rail, but she is almost ready to sail.
I have to give a big thank you to dad for his drive to get her done. I have enjoyed working with him
and watching her progress. It was amazing to work side by side with him and I look forward to our
first sail. I am humbled by his skills, knowledge, and dedication to a dream I had to see Ballerina sail
again. I have no words to describe my gratitude.
I look forward to seeing you on the club deck, enjoying the great view!!!

Race

The Race Committee is well into the current year activity and planning. The Frostbite season ended
Sunday, April 27. The daily, series and season results are on the website. Of special note one of our STP
sailors, Erin Abbott, was the class B winner for the season.
The next events for all hands are the Cox series every Tuesday starting May 19 and the Pret Gladding
Memorial Race around Prudence Island on May 31. The Notices of Race and application for each is on
the web site. The Pret Gladding is a little later than in the past due to bay wide conflicts. This should
give you more time to get your boat in the water and join us. This is, as usual, a family orientated race.
Other events we are preparing for are:
Sunfish Regional Championships, June 6 - 7
J30/J29 Open Regatta, July 25 - 26
Newport Regatta, July 11 - 12.
The Sunfish Championships are open to all Sunfish sailors. So please consider competing. In addition,
we welcome additional RC members. Experience is not needed. If you even think you might be
interested, please call me at 401-338-5941 or contact a Race Committee member.

STP

Spring is finally here! The new STP floats are nearing
completion, and we are very excited and thankful for our
new and improved digs. It’s great to see our 100% refitted
and refurbished fiberglass fleet coming out of the garage or
sandlot, as the case may be. The STP Committee has been
hard at work all winter putting together an amazing
program. In the coming weeks, we will start finalizing and
implementing our plans. We are excited to watch all of our
hard work come to fruition, as we watch our program
unfold.

information about the return of the spring Sunday
afternoon clinics beginning at the end of May. These weekly
clinics offer a great opportunity for more advanced sailors
to shake off the rust and prepare for the summer season.
Clinics will focus on boat handling, tactics, and other racing
skills.
Please remember private lessons are also available in the
spring and you should contact the office or STP if you are
interested in signing up early. Time slots fill up fast and will
be first come, first served.
Women Teaching Women is starting off with a bang with
new events for 2015. You can read more about this in the
article in this month’s Line. Please watch the eBlast for
additional information on all our STP programs.

Marina Project Update

The final push for completion!
We can easily see the end of this great project.
All the floating docks have been delivered and
with a few exceptions are in the water and in
position. These floats and their pilings are
completely installed in the North Marina and
Center Marina, and the pilings have been
banded at the designed height above the water
table and cut to length. They will be capped
with protective cones in the next week.
The water and electrical service is installed and
working in the North Marina, and mostly
installed but not yet activated in the Middle
(STP) Marina. The Dock Shack has been put on
its special float section and the fuel and
electrical service is being finalized.
The South Marina has been progressing steadily,
both with some shore-side clean-up of the rocks
and gravel, and with the initial pilings and
floats. This effort will continue as the tides
permit, while the remainder of the work crew is
dedicated to finalizing the Clubhouse decking
and railings so the Clubhouse can be safely
opened this weekend.

lot, and working with our landscaper to install
some new planting around the front of the
Clubhouse. Also this week, we will receive
crushed shells to re-surface all the parking areas,
beginning with the areas most damaged during
the construction.
While the bulk of the project will be completed
for the opening, allowing a few boats into their
new slips and few to be tied outboard of the
new fuel dock, the details will continue,
especially in the South Marina, for another few
weeks. If you make it to the opening, there
should be time to walk the deck and inspect the
docks, and if you don’t make it to opening,
please stop in at your convenience.
At the Spring Meeting this Friday, we will brief
on the status of the construction and review our
finances for the project. With few more good
work days left until then, my report above will
hopefully be a bit behind the reality. And thanks
again to Matt Mitchell for some fantastic aerial
photos from his quad-copter drone.

Women Teaching Women

We’re gearing up for another great summer of
Women Teaching Women. First on our lineup:
The WTW Kick-off Cocktail Party
Thursday, June 4th at 6 p.m.

Come hear all about this exciting Monday-night
program that covers a variety of important
boating topics and offers plenty of hands-on
experience in big boats, 420s, Visions, and
powerboats. Club women get to know each
other in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere, and
the program is a fun, social way to meet new
friends and reconnect after a long winter. WTW
is for women of all levels—those who’ve
participated in the WTW program for the last
few years and want to keep up their skills; those
who sailed when they were young and want to
get back into the sport; and those who’ve never
even been on a boat. If you’re an experienced
sailor who’d like to help teach, please contact us!
Here’s how the 2015 season is shaping up:
2015 WTW PROGRAM
June 22: Sailing chalk talk plus learning to rig
420s and Visions. In the clubhouse, Zeth Morgan
will discuss the points of sail, parts of the boat,
basic safety issues, and required gear. More
advanced topics will also be covered. Then we'll
practice rigging 420s and Visions on the dock.
June 29: Small boat fundamentals: Each
participant will sail with an instructor or
experienced sailor in a 420 or Vision. This is a
great way to get on the water regardless of your
ability. On small boat sailing nights, students
will also have the opportunity to practice driving
and docking skills in a club-owned powerboat.
July 6: Small boat basic course maneuvering #1:
Novice students will partner with a more
experienced student or an instructor to sail
around marks and learn the basics of racing.

July 13: Second Annual “Mini Ladies Cup” 420
Race: This event is open to all women club
members, whether or not they are participating
in WTW. STP instructors will help with coaching.
Afterwards, we’ll present awards and a share a
celebratory meal.
July 20: Big boat night #1: Topics covered in the
two big-boat sessions will be: man-overboard
drills, improvement of boat-handling, racing
fundamentals including crewing skills.
July 27: Small-boat basic course maneuvering
#2. Plus powerboat option.
August 3: Big boat night #2
August 10: All of this culminates in the
prestigious Ole’ Ladies Cup race, in which WTW
students are strongly encouraged to participate.
Women can sign up for individual nights or the
entire six-session series ($20 per session or $100
for whole series). Classes will start promptly at
5:30 p.m. and run until about 8:30 p.m. Then we
all head for the bar.
So ladies, we hope you’ll spend your Monday
nights with us this summer. RSVP here for the

Cruise Committee sponsored steak dinner at the
club – Friday May 16'th
Enjoy a grilled steak? The Cruise Committee,
again with assistance from our dear friends on
the Social Committee, will be grilling steaks just
the way you like them. Steak, baked potatoes
with all the fixings, Sheila's Caesar salad, Anne
Massa's garlic bread and dessert. How can you
beat that? Come on down to visit with friends
and help kick off the 2015 cruising season at the
BYC.
even planting some Spring flowers. You know,
spruce the place up kinds of stuff after the
ravages of winter. Well, I admit that those things
are pretty low on my list (but please don't tell
Sheila). You see, I'm easily distracted. And
besides, getting the boat ready for launch is more
fun. First order of business was Maestoso's
bottom, which needed lots of work. Candidly, it
was a mess. What appeared to be decades of
paint build-up with lots of flaking and paint
craters. The flakes were at least 1/4 of an inch
thick! Ugly. Too bad you can't easily see the great
job the crew over at Stanley's did on her bottom.
Soda blasting, fairing, multiple epoxy barrier
coats, bottom paint, and some nice new shiny
zinc jewelry. Looks brand spanking new, and
smooth! If anyone wants to see for themselves, I
can lend a mask and fins. Still lots to do topsides
though. But the list is getting shorter. So despite
some dirty clothes and sore muscles, I'm loving it.
With any luck she'll be in the water this week,
before the 2015 opening! Hopefully the varnish
guy will call me back soon. And the yard stuff;
we'll get a round to it one of these days...

Sou’wester mechanical overhaul
As the weather gets warmer we are all starting to
think more about time on and near the water.
The staff, house committee, and board of
governors have all been working hard during the
winter to get the club and its various assets in
Bristol condition for the season to come. While
the new marina is the most obvious of those
projects, it’s not all we’ve been working on.
Our trusty committee boat, Sou’wester, along
with our race committee, is a fixture at regattas
all around Narragansett Bay. After years of hard
use it received a major exterior make over three
years ago.
But with age and increasing
maintenance issues we felt it was time to turn
our attention to the mechanical components to
ensure many more years of reliable service.

This past winter the engine and transmission of
Sou’wester were removed from the boat and
brought to our mechanic.
There was an
extensive list of service items to be completed
including replacement or repair of oil and fuel
lines, raw water hoses, heat exchanger, engine
mounts, engine fittings, strainers, clutch
assembly, and exhaust. While the engine was
out, the bilge was cleaned and painted to
facilitate future service.
All work has been
completed and the engine has been re-installed.
With this major service we expect years more
dependable and safe service for our race
committee as they manage regattas here and
around the bay.

events and programs for the 346 junior members at BYC this summer. The kickoff will be the junior opening on June 18th. After the STP orientation
