HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY, JEAN LANG!
“I have no secret
to a long life. I
just took life one
day at a time,
and took what
came.”
“I believe a
strong faith
helps get you
through the
good times and
the bad.”
Jean Lang born in 1915
Jean celebrated her 100th birthday on February 26th and was recognized by
several local dignitaries and honored by residents, staff, friends and family.
A centenarian is a person who lives to or beyond the age of 100 years. North
America currently has the greatest number of centenarians in the world,
estimated at over 75,000. Japan has the second largest number of
centenarians at over 40,000.
According to the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence
Foundation, the first person to live to over 150 years of age has already been
born. The United Nations says that by 2050 there will be 2.2 million people
in the world who are over 100. The figure for the number of humans aged
100 or older in the world today is about 300,000.

"We're living longer because people are reaching old age in better health,"
said demographer James Vaupel. But once it starts, the process of aging
itself, including dementia and heart disease, is still happening at pretty much
the same rate. Deterioration, instead of being stretched out, is being
postponed.
Individuals like Jean who live into their second century tend to be survivors.
Professor Dunbar of Columbia University studied people in their nineties and
older and found that they are well insulated from negative emotions, such as
depression, anxiety, and conflict. They have a strong survival instinct along
with a terrific sense of humor.
Jean represents the characteristics of a centenarian. She has a good sense
of humour, is satisfied with life, feels happy, and possesses an intrinsic sense
of self-worth.
Jean maintains a strong relationship with her family and enjoys their frequent
visits and various outings including shopping trips, social calls and dining
out. She keeps herself mentally and physically active. She is an avid
gardener and maintains a lively interest in horticulture, nurturing her plants
with love and care. She also walks to all events both internally and
externally. She is very health conscious and, with the assistance of her
family, monitors and reviews her diet and medications. Jean is a determined
woman who knows what she wants and makes her own decisions. She is a
very pleasant, graceful and well-dressed woman who beautifully coordinates
her accessories such as jewelry, scarves and shoes!
Congratulations, Jean, you are an inspiration to us all! Congratulations also
to our other centenarians here at Bay Haven; Luena Daley, Minnie Robinson,
Lillian Kettlewell and Phyllis Whitehead.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Nursing Home resident, Mrs. Luena Daley,
was a very deserving recipient of the Ontario
Seniors Achievement Award in December
2014.
The Ontario Seniors Achievement
Award is presented annually by the Lieutenant
Governor of Ontario to seniors over the age of
65 who have made significant volunteer
contributions to their community. At the age of
102, Mrs. Daley provides a 30 minute musical
program to our Nursing Home residents 4
times a week. Mrs. Daley is a true inspiration
to all residents, staff, families and volunteers
who meet or know her. Mrs. Daley was not
able to attend the awards ceremony held at
Queen’s Park in Toronto, however, thanks to
modern technology, she was able to watch the ceremony with her daughters

in our conference room as the ceremony was streamed online live from
Toronto.
Mrs. Daley was presented with her award at Bay Haven by MPP Jim Wilson
in December. Surrounded by close friends, family, residents and staff, Mrs.
Daley was thanked for her dedication to volunteer service at Bay Haven.
She continues to positively influence the quality of life of our residents and
staff.
Congratulations, Luena! You are most deserving of this award!
JUST SAY NO TO THE FLU AND OTHER VIRUSES
Please be reminded that if you are not feeling well, do not visit. This year we
have seen many illnesses including Influenza A and other Influenza-Like
Illnesses (ILI) in the community. Studies indicate the best way to prevent
infections and outbreaks is to use good hand hygiene practices and get your
flu vaccination.
We thank all families for your patience during our most recent outbreaks.
COMMUNICATION IN THE DIGITAL WORLD
Email
For those of you who have provided us with your email address, we thank
you. The response has been terrific. We will continue to use email as a way
to communicate non-urgent information like outbreaks and facility status
updates. All resident specific communication will continue to come from the
charge nurse to your family. Please email [email protected] and
your email address will be entered into the database for future
communications.
Please note that the email to communicate with residents is
[email protected]. Please include the resident’s name in the subject
line of the email or it cannot be delivered to your loved one.
Skype
Bay Haven has a Skype account which can be used for resident connection.
If you have Skype and would like to arrange a meeting in advance to speak

ACTIVITY REPORT
We have had a busy but exciting start to 2015 so far! We have been working
to offer new programs to all of our residents or have been working to change
already existing offerings and present them in a new way. We have
welcomed back our favourite entertainers and launched new programming
for ‘just the men’ to attend.
We welcome, Cait Ainger, a Grade 12 student from CCI as a co-op student
in the Activity Department. Cait has just begun her first week within the
department so is busy ‘learning the ropes’ but will soon be joining in on
delivering programs and services to our residents through the activity
department. Please say hello to Cait if you see her!
You may have noticed there are new display cases outside at the entrances
to both the Nursing Home and Retirement Home. Keep an eye on these
kiosks as they will have postings of upcoming events as well as our most up
to date activity calendars!
Our Nursing Home residents
completely enjoyed a flower
demonstration in February. The
presentation was lead by Marilyn
Smith of Marilyn’s Country Florist
Studio in Wasaga Beach.
Marilyn demonstrated to our
residents how to create a
beautiful
floral
table
arrangement. She also showed
us how to make a beautiful
corsage which she gave to one
lucky resident with the birthday closest to Christmas!
Marilyn was kind enough to present a corsage to all of our residents in
attendance at her presentation. This was a special treat to all of our
residents and many of them kept them on for a couple of days following her
presentation as it was so special to them.
Marilyn very kindly donated her presentation payment to the Resident’s
Council Tulips for Parkinson’s program in support of Parkinson’s research.
Thank you, Marilyn, for your kindness and for sharing your talents with us!
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION
Our most recent recipient of the Employee Recognition Program Award is
Amanda Gill, Personal Support Worker. Amanda joined Bay Haven
Retirement Home in 1991 as a part time Dietary/Housekeeping Aide. After
a few years, Amanda decided to return to school and pursue a career in
nursing. She graduated with a Personal Support Worker certificate from
Georgian College and moved into a full time position in 1998.
Amanda married Geoff Gill, her neighbour, in 2004. Although the two had
known each other for years, they were never romantically involved.
Amanda’s good friend, Jeremy, asked her to be his “Best Man” in his
wedding. Even though it is not common for a woman to be a “Best Man”,
Amanda stepped up to the task. The planning and organizing was easy,
the challenging component was playing Black Jack at Jeremy’s Bachelor
Party. Amanda asked her childhood neighbor, Geoff, if he would teach her
how to play Black Jack. As they sat on her front porch, she learned much
more than Black Jack, she learned she really liked her neighbour.
Amanda and Geoff have two children, Hayden, 11, an avid hockey player
and Chloe, 7, who loves animals, especially horses and is active with art
and swim lessons. The family dog, Jake, a Yorkie Poo, loves Amanda
dearly.
When Amanda is not at Bay Haven, she enjoys spending time with family
and friends and is involved with various children’s activities. Camping is an
activity that keeps her family busy in the summer. The campsite, near
Owen Sound, is where they swim, fish and sit around campfires, singing
songs and roasting marshmallows.
Amanda made a significant lifestyle change in the last few months. After a
stern lecture from her doctor, Amanda gave up sweets and processed
meats. She exercises daily, walking on the treadmill or taking the dog for a
walk and walking with friends. She has lost over 40 pounds, but more
importantly, feels great and continues on her health journey. She has
learned to ditch bad habits, such as pop and salt. She is pleased to report
that her good habits are being adopted by the entire family. She remains
Page 7 of 8
motivated and dedicated to her new lifestyle.
Amanda says “I love my residents!” She feels lucky to be working with her
mother and to be able to see her grandmother every day. Her
grandmother, Annie Malcolm is a resident in the Retirement Home and her
mother, Roseanne Beaupre, is the Retirement Home Manager.
Congratulations, Amanda on a job well done!
OTN (ONTARIO TELEMEDICINE NETWORK)
Bay Haven has completed the requirements for the Ontario Telemedicine
Network (OTN) video conferencing system. We have used OTN for several
educational opportunities and look forward to the upcoming clinical
consultations which will promote care where and when residents need it and
reduces the costs, safety risks and stress that can be related to resident
transferring residents to appointments.
