Kentucky Teacher of the Year in 1994.
Jennifer Wood Synold has been teaching
workshops for bby Publications for 14 years and has been
teaching for 21 years, having taught in grades 1, 2, 4, 5,
6, 7, and 8. She was a math coach for her school for four
years, consulted with school districts across the country and served
as district math coach for three additional years. During those seven
years, she chaired the district’s K-12 mathematics committee, helped
develop the district’s K-8 math curriculum plan, and was a district math
workshop leader. Jennifer presented at the 2015 NCTM conference.

presenter Megan S. Candelaria
Megan S. Candelaria, received a BS in mathematics and
physics, a Masters in mathematics, and is currently pursuing a PhD
in Mathematics Education at the University of Wyoming. Candelaria
also works as an undergraduate lecturer for the UW’s Mathematics
Department where she teaches a variety of mathematics courses. She
is a member of the UW’s Science Posse – an NSF GK-12 grant-funded
program. With her enthusiasm, she attempts to pull students away
from their “I-hate-math” attitudes.

SESSION DESCRIPTION
1, 2, 3…How Fluent Can You Be? Developing Number Sense Using Visual Models
This session is designed to provide teachers with strategies for helping young children develop number fluency and
concepts for number operations in a play-based learning environment. Through hands-on experience, teachers will
Pre-K
practice strategies for effectively integrating grid use into daily meeting activities. Teachers will also learn strategies for
through
developing number sense in addition and subtraction concepts through:
Kindergarten • creating word problems • using visual models when problem solving
• practicing strategies for illustrating, solving, and proving word problems
• using effective methods of communicating/proving solutions
Grades 1
through 2
Grades 3
through 4
Can You Solve It? Using Visual Models for Fluency and Problem Solving
This session is focused on training teachers how to:
• help students become fluent with addition and subtraction problems
• help students understand the relationship between addition and subtraction as they use models to gain fluency
• help students use models to become better problem solvers as they interpret word problems
It’s All About that Bait! Multiplication & Division Fact Bait©
This session is a full day of multiplication/division explorations as a foundational strategy for developing fact fluency. Using
the calendar as a daily motivator, participants explore a ten-minute routine used for exploring multiple models for both
multiplication and division. When a fact is coupled with models, explorations of inverse operations, properties and much
more, it is easily seen and understood. Before long, mastery is within reach!
My Place or Yours? What’s My Place? What’s My Value?©
Grades 5
through 6
This session helps teachers implement an interactive classroom display that uses visual models and numbers to help children
develop concepts related to place value. This 10-minute, large group routine provides repeated opportunities for children
to develop an understanding of the magnitude, flexibility and beauty of the base ten system. Participants will actively
experience:
• personal mathematical growth in numbers/number operations, and algebraic thinking/reasoning
• development of number sense and understanding of the base-ten system
• using visual models when computing and problem solving • changing the unit and focusing on place value
• effective methods of communicating/proving solutions
• the power of changing the unit and focusing upon value
• creating connections among strands of mathematical content
• strategies for illustrating, solving and proving word problems
AND
Operation Station! Proving and Solving Base Ten Operations with Models
During this session, participants will work towards:
• developing the meaning of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using multiple models for whole number
operations and their applications
• expanding conceptual understanding of whole number operations to encompass decimals
• understanding multi-digit computation using standard and alternative/invented algorithms, mental mathematics, and
computational estimation
It’s More than Just Pizzas! Fraction Bait©
Grades 7
through 8
This session will provide teachers with strategies for challenging students to:
• develop fraction intuitions and estimation skills
• think conceptually about fractions
• add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions
• model fractions using area and linear models
• rename fractions as equivalents
• compare fractions
• decompose fractions
• apply algebraic and pattern-based thinking to fractions
• extend visual thinking tools for conceptualizing fractions into operations
Keep Calm and Just Lead! Enhancing School Improvement through Instructional Coaching
The focus of this session is to enhance coaching skills of instructional leaders and instructional coaches through effective
instructional practices. Participants will examine best practices for developing collaborative learning environments that
enhance student achievement. Proven practices which get teachers on board through quality teacher observations,
Instructional
model lessons, and reflective conversations will be studied. This interactive professional development session will prepare
Leaders
participants to develop an action plan for proposed implementation. This session is focused on the following topics:
Instructional • incorporation of essential components of coaching for successful math teaching and learning
Coaches
• fostering positive communication between coaches and teachers
• understanding the relationships that foster effective teaching and learning, content knowledge, quality instructional
practice, and ongoing assessment
• success stories while using bby math methodologies in the field
