Mini City Project - Beal High School

Mini City Project
Twenty-one Year 7 students took part in a two day clay workshop on Monday 7th and
Tuesday 8th July to help students develop their awareness of space and scale, use their
own creative ideas to produce three dimensional buildings with textural elements and
work as part of a team.
The workshop was split into five
phases:
Phase One began with a discussion of
artists and architects.
Students were put into groups of 4 for
Phase Two where they created collaborative drawings of cityscapes.
Phase Three encompassed a practice run of creating textured tiles to generate ideas for their final towers leading to Phase Four; a preparation task where students
explored various skills and techniques.
Phase Five enabled students to create their individual towers generating a miniature city
which will be continued with the new Year 7s in September.
The workshop proved that without any prior knowledge, Beal students can produce some
excellent work in an extended period of time. Everyone who took part should be proud!
Well Done!

Ambassadors Olivia
Griffith, Kavitha Kavthibanathan, Genitha Kameswaran
from 10KU, and
Prasad Umavannan,
10PA.
Year 10 Ambassador Prasad Umavannan, 10PA, said:
“The best part of the workshop was making the large towers
and helping the Year 7s to create their letter slates and cityscapes.”
The Ambassadors showed exceptional guidance and encouragement to the Year 7s. Thank You!
Here are some of the students thoughts about the workshop...
Seher Altaf, 7TD
“Learning how to roll cylinders out of clay with the use of a rolling pin and cheese-wire was interesting and fun. I also liked creating our own buildings and adding features such as roofs, balconies and windows.”
Davina Kaur Rajbans, 7GW
“During the ClayWorkshop, I enjoyed using clay to make sculptures. It was a really great opportunity as I learnt new techniques including using slabs to roll out clay to the right depth.”

Amrit Grewal, 7SR
“I enjoyed drawing the large scale building with graphite sticks and making my own towers because of the endless individual responses.”
Hannan Nassir-Deen, 7SO
“We all worked on different aspects in drawing the city landscape and it was great to see it all come together. I enjoyed making the tiles because it was a chance to be creative. The towers were a bit hard to
make as it was difficult to roll the clay but it was good to learn different techniques on how to make our
sculptures interesting and detailed.”
