Welcome to Lilongwe, the capital and largest city of Malawi. The city is located in the Central Region of Malawi. Malawi
shares international boundaries with Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia.
VENUE
Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) is located in the central part of Lilongwe City Centre close to the Capital
Hill. The Capital Hill is where Government ministries operate from.
VISA
A full valid passport is required for entry into Malawi. For tourist visits, visas are NOT required by citizens of most
Commonwealth countries, the USA, Japan, most European Union countries and certain other countries. Please check the
complete list below, and refer to your nearest Malawi diplomatic mission, from which visas for any nationality can be
obtained.

VACCINATIONS
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers arriving from, or transiting through, infected areas.
Following WHO guidelines issued in 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is not a condition of entry to Malawi.

AIRPORT
Lilongwe's Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) fields regular flights to Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Lusaka and
domestic services to Blantyre. The airport is located to the North of Lilongwe, approximately 20 kilometers from the City
Centre. A taxi ride from the airport to the city would cost approximately MK18,000.
TRANSPORT
Lilongwe uses minibuses as the main local public transport. Private taxis are available in the hotels.
Local public transports charge a flat rate of MK300 from one bus stop to the next drop off stop. The busses have
difference routes. Please ask the hotel you will be at for the routes to the place you would like to go to.
CURRENCY
The unit of the Malawian currency is the Malawi Kwacha (MK).
Foreign bank notes and traveler’s checks can be converted into the Malawi Kwacha at foreign exchange banks and other
authorized money exchange outlets. The exchange rate is subject to market fluctuations. As of March 2015, US$ 1 is
approximately MK450.
ATM and currency exchange banks are also available within the city centre. Most ATMs do take VISA cards and Master
Cards.
Opening hours for banks is 8:00am to 3:00pm.

ELECTRICITY
The standard voltage in Malawi is 240 volts. The outlet is the same type used in UK and many other countries.
WEATHER
Lilongwe features a humid subtropical climate with pleasantly warm summers and mild winters. April is at the end of the
wet season and Lilongwe may still experience some rainfall. During the conference period the average temperature will
range between 13°C and 26°C.
