Snowman hat
This pattern is written for a newborn size, with a cast on of 56 stitches. The other cast on numbers given
in this pattern increase the hat size by about an inch and a half to an inch and three quarters, for every
additional 7 stitches cast on. As a rule of thumb, here are the cast on stitch number by infant size:
Newborn: CO 56
0 to 3 months: CO 63
3 to 6 months: CO 70
6 to 9 months: CO 77
9 to 12 months: CO 84
Materials:
1. Size 7, 16” circular or double pointed needles
2. Size 7 straight needles
3. Tapestry needle
4. Stitch markers
5. Crochet needle (size F,G or H preferably)
6. Lion Brand Vanna’s choice yarn in these colors: charcoal, brown, white, scarlet, and terra cotta.
Any worsted weight yarn would be fine if you choose to use different colors.
7. Sew on felt flower for hat.
8. Red embroidery floss
Gauge: 16 sts and 20 rows=4 inches in STst
Snowman Face: Using Scarlet yarn, CO 56(63, 70, 77, 84) stitches in round. Place a stitch marker at the
beginning of your round.
Knit 3 rounds inch band in k1 p1 ribbing.
Switch to white color and knit 14 rounds. Switch to charcoal color and knit 4 rounds. Now you are
ready to shape the crown.
Crown shaping: Place a stitch marker at beginning of round. For newborn hat your decrease begins
here:K2 tog, Knit 6** for one round
Knit around
K 2 tog, Knit5 ** for one round
Knit a round
K2 tog Knit 4** for one round
knit a round
K2 tog, Knit 3** for one round

K2 tog, Knit 2** for one round
Knit a round
K2 tog, Knit 1** for one round

K2 tog** for one round
Gather through remaining stitches, and weave in loose ends
If you cast on 63, you will start the decrease at K2 tog, knit 7, then do the decrease as given for the
newborn hat.
If you cast on 70, begin decrease at K2 tog, knit 8.
If you cast on 77, begin decrease at K2 tog, knit 9.
If you cast on 84, begin decrease at K2 tog, knit 10.
Top hat: Using charcoal yarn, CO same number of stitches as you did for the face and join in the round.
Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.
Knit 10 rounds in hat color.
Switch to band color (taupe) and knit 6 rounds in band color. Switch back to the hat color and knit 15
rounds. Bind off. Weave in all loose ends on hat.
Attach snowman face to top hat. Attach at the very last row of white stitches, and the last row of
charcoal stitches in the brim, just before the band. (see photos below) Use a whip stitch i n every other
knit stitch all the way around. Only grab the upper stitch with your needle. If you go too deep here, you
will sew your hat together!
Once hat is attached, go ahead and sew on your cute felt flower. This is where it really gets fun!!! I used
a lime green flower and red embroidery floss to pick up the scarf color. Cute!
Carrot Nose: Using DPNs or two circular needles, CO 10 in round using terra cotta yarn.
Knit one round
K2 tog, knit 3, K2 tog, knit 3.
Knit one round (8)
K2 tog, knit 2, K2 tog, knit 2 (6)
Knit one round
K 2 tog, Knit 1, K2 tog, knit 1 (4)
Knit one round
K2 tog, K2 tog (2)
Gather through.
Attach to middle of face using whip stitch. I shape mine a bit so it points upward.
Now sew the eyes onto the piece. The black buttons d not have to be exactly alike. I like the way it
looks when they are off a little bit.
Viola!!! Your snow man hat is complete!
