Hello!

Volume 6 No 3
Issue: June 2012
Hello!
Winter is here! Though I am not sure if Winter knows that yet. We have a jam-packed next few months in the
store and we have all hit the ground running after the quilt and craft show a couple of weeks ago. With so much
going on and a few more events that have been booked since the last issue, I thought I should quickly do up a
mini newsletter to fill you all in.
There is much ado amongst Western Australian quilters about the up-coming Ricky Tims event.. we are all very
excited and we do have a lot of quilters flying in from around the country to attend. Just a reminder that the
early bird rate ends on June 15th! You can book your tickets online at http://www.handcraftershouse.com.au
I hope you enjoy this issue!

Handcrafters House is hosting an inspiring workshop with award winning, textile and
surface design artist, Caroline Sharkey.
Colour, Texture and Pattern
This workshop starts off with a smaller central design to set the theme and individual style of the quilt.
Adding borders to extend this and exploring shapes and symbols to represent and develop the
possible cultural aspect.
The central design can be off set for an individual styled point
of view. Bring along landscape ideas and fabrics relating to
these images and drawings, also printed patterned fabrics
that have interesting designs to cut shapes from.
Learn to build a surface with many different layers and
stitching that enhances the finished quilt top. Chop fabrics
like you have never before and stitch them together to
create new and interesting textures.
Thread paint and free machine drawing will add
those final touches to your Art quilt.
Let your creativity flourish in this inspiring and exciting class!



12 Granny Smith apples, peeled, grated
1 cup reduced-fat ricotta cheese
1/4 cup caster sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 cup low-fat milk
1 cup wholemeal self-raising flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
20g reduced-fat spread, melted
Low-fat vanilla ice-cream and maple syrup, to serve
Method
Using your hands, squeeze liquid from apple. Set aside. Place ricotta, sugar and egg yolks in a bowl. Whisk to
combine. Gradually whisk in milk.
Sift flour and cinnamon over ricotta mixture. Add flour husks to bowl. Whisk until just combined. Stir in
apple.
Using an electric mixer, beat eggwhites in a small bowl until soft peaks form. Using a metal spoon, stir onethird of the eggwhite through flour mixture. Gently fold remaining eggwhite through batter. Stand, covered,
for 15 minutes.
Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Brush pan lightly with spread. Spoon 1/4 cup batter into pan.
Spread to a 12cm circle. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until bubbles appear on surface. Turn. Cook for 2 minutes
or until cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Cover to keep warm. Repeat with remaining spread and batter to
make 12 pancakes. Serve with ice-cream and syrup.
Notes
Variations: Choc-raspberry pancakes: Replace cinnamon with 2 tablespoons cocoa powder. Replace apple
with 3/4 cup chopped frozen raspberries. Serve with chocolate sauce and raspberries.
Blueberry pancakes: Omit cinnamon. Replace apple with 3/4 cup frozen blueberries. Serve with maple syrup
and low-fat yoghurt.
Banana and honey pancakes: Replace sugar with 2 tablespoons honey. Replace apple with 3/4 cup mashed
banana. Serve with low-fat yoghurt and honey.
