It`s our history. Preserve it.

It ’ s our history. Preserve it.
Bedford Historical Society
2014 Annual Report
Mission
It is the mission of the Bedford Historical Society . . .
to preserve and promote the buildings, landmarks and artifacts that document the history of Bedford, New York; to increase
awareness, understanding and appreciation of the town’s founding and growth; and to strengthen the current and future historic
character of the town.
The Bedford Historical Society will:
1
Celebrate and cultivate interest in the history of the town of Bedford.
Our Walking Tour Book & Map received an award for excellence, our enewsletter “Bedford Stories”
brought history into hundreds of homes and we gave numerous tours to residents and visitors.
2
3
Identify, document and maintain
buildings, monuments
and natural landscapes of historical significance to
the town.
In 2014 the Historical Society maintained and preserved eight buildings, two
landmarks and 95 acres with four conservation easements. Significant repairs
were completed at the Post Office and numerous upgrades were made to the
Jackson House.
Procure,
preserve and interpret objects, artifacts, documents and
images relating to the natural, literary, artistic and civil history of
the Town of Bedford.
Each year historically significant objects and documents are donated to the Society. These along
with items in our collection are researched, cataloged and displayed in our museums.
4
Provide
access to the buildings and collections for
research, education and enjoyment through museums
and temporary exhibits, events, educational programs
and community initiatives.
While many groups toured the Court House this year, several weddings
were also performed there and close to 500 children visited as part of our
Education Programs. Cokie Roberts spoke and signed books for a capacity
crowd at our History Matters event and we co-hosted “the ABCs of Honey
Bees” with the Bedford Free Library.
5
Work
in partnership with the Town and local organizations to
further the welfare and preservation of the historic character
of the community.
Last year we began working with the Town to improve traffic safety and pedestrian
crossings in the Village. We worked with the new owners of the Playhouse and the Bedford
Village Business Association to address the limited parking and to improve the vitality of
the business environment.
The majority of our funding comes from you, our members, and the balance comes from the rental of our buildings. Preservation
requires planning, vigilance, dedication and love. But without adequate funding, none of it is possible. For close to 100 years,
we’ve preserved Bedford’s historic character with the support of our members. Please join, renew your membership or make a
donation so future generations can enjoy this historic oasis.

A Note to Our Members
We are grateful to our members who make the Bedford Historical
Society possible, and with whose abiding support we are able to
sustain our mission of preservation and education.
The historic character of Bedford Village is a direct result of the
Bedford Historical Society’s efforts since our founding in 1916.
Today, as we close in on one hundred years of preservation, we own
and maintain ten historic properties in Bedford—thanks to you!
We hope that by bringing these beloved buildings—and the stories
of the people who inhabited them—to life, we are helping to make
history matter to people of all ages.
The remnants of our past can, if protected, illuminate and inspire
future generations.
With sincere thanks,
Stacy Albanese
President, Board of Directors
We welcomed Mary Cox, John Fink, Anthony Giordano and
Marilyn Glass to the Board in 2014.
We voted to enact term limits for the Board of Directors. Board
members now serve a maximum of three, 2-year terms. To maintain
strong leadership, term limits are suspended for the President and
Vice President while in office.
