Special praise this week has to go to the incredible Year 6 children who have been a picture of composure. Ably
guided by Ms Porter and her year 6 team, the children have risen to the challenge and have really given the SATs
tests their all. We are all proud of you!
The children in particular would like to thank Becky Dormor and Sophie Knivett for running the Beer Primary
‘Greasy Spoon’ café this week. This gave them a real energy boost and made them feel very special. I dare say that
the staff will also miss the morning snacks next week too!
Despite the unseasonal mists on Sunday blocking out the fantastic view of the Jurassic Coast, there was a great
atmosphere and a good number of entries in this year’s Beer Blazer. The series of races covered some of the Axe
Valley Runners' Grizzly multi-terrain course which makes it arguably one of the toughest 10k runs in the area.
In the 10K main event, Axe Valley Runner Tim Lenton with a time (in minutes) of 45.17 retained his title and was
followed home by Honiton Running Club’s Kevin Hawker 46.37 and Ian Stewart 46.46.
Jayne Alison 53.56 from Mud Crew Trail Runners was the ladies 10K victor followed by Axe Valley
Runner Eleanor Wood 55.53 and Clare Hansford 55.58. Entries included a good number of representatives from
across the federation as well as a growing number of ex-pupils. First home was Rob Giffard, Head of
Teaching and Learning at All Saints Primary School in 8th place followed by ex-Beer pupil Rory Morgan in 9th. I
came home in 15th place and the next in was Matt Gabb in 57th. Mr Smith, Head teacher of Axe Valley, barely broke
a sweat and strolled home in 68th followed by Beer parent James Thomson in 78th. Other great performances from
friends of the federation included Evie Morgan 33rd, Alex Morgan 44th, Lizzie Trewick 77nd and Susan Green 87th.
Axe Valley Runner Oliver Rodger 24.50 was the victor in the male 5K race, ahead of another Axe Valley
Runner Max Bowskill 25.49 and Honiton Running Club’s Thomas Lilley 26.36. Phoebe Clarke (Cycle Life
Axminster) won the female 5K, with Axe Valley Runner and ex-pupil Mia Bartlett 27.02 2nd and Honiton Running
Club Katelyn Wells 28.06 3rd. All Saints Julie Burrough who only decided to run on the day finished 12th, ex-Beer
pupil Kerrie Teasdale came 20th and Beer Parent Karen Leslie came 32nd.
The 1 mile children’s run attracted a record 93 entries, all spurred on by eager relatives. The Boys winner was
Beer’s Harvey Green with Josh Comer 2nd and Sam Eyre in 3rd. Hattie Trumlett won the girls race followed by
Beer’s Innes FitzGerald and Alice Clarke. There were so many children that entered from across the federation and a
full list of results is available on the Axe Valley runners’ website. There was certainly that sea of orange t-shirts
again which made our children stand out!
Behind the scenes there was an incredible team of PTFA led by Race Director Katherine Reed and the chair of the
PTFA Becky Dormor. There are so many people and sponsors that I would like to thank, that I’m still compiling my
list which will appear in next week’s Friday Flier!

Class 1: Isabelle Langham for beautiful writing about the Donkey Sanctuary, Thomas Llewellyn and Sammy
Grant for writing number lines counting backwards with fantastic concentration, Lauren Ari for her beautiful
handwriting, Farhan Bhuiyan for always being polite and thoughtful towards others and Lawrie Rowe for being
such a good conversationalist on the coach back from Branscombe.
Class 2: Anthony Parkinson for beautifully presented independent number calculations adding and taking ten with
a 100 grid, Lilly May Gribble for lovely linked sentences, Anna Wolfreys and Tilly Adkin for strong introductory
paragraphs about The Donkey Sanctuary, Charlie Williams for adding a little more detail to his writing and All of
Year 2 for making such a strong start to 55 club – a new system for learning tables.
Class 3: Sienna Arbourne for contributing more during carpet sessions, Lewis Gorman for showing a mature
attitude when finding lost property, Adam Clinch for achieving the most rungs and Evan Hourihan for his postcard
work in Literacy this week.
Class 4: Lily Chapple for giving her best in every task, and offering thoughtful contributions during class
discussion, Megan Fowler for working extremely hard and never needing to be reminded and All of Year 6 for all
their hard work and effort during SATs week.
Donkey Sanctuary Trip – classes 1 and 2
The children enjoyed their visit to the donkey sanctuary. We went into the donkey hospital and learnt about how the
charity looks after them. We then stroked the donkeys and learnt about their needs. Thank you to all the parents that
joined us on the trip.
School Meals – Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd May
We have been notified by Seaton kitchen that next week they will be swapping the Thursday and Friday menu
around.
Universal Free School Meals – Reception, years 1 and 2
Your child should have a received a letter today regarding menu choices after half term. Please note you only need
to do anything if you wish to make a change to your child’s current menu choices, otherwise it will continue as it is.

Sporting Success for the Paget Boys
Congratulations to Daniel Paget who was awarded ‘Most improved Under 7’s Player’ for Sidmouth Rugby Club at
their awards ceremony last weekend. On the following day Jakes Sidmouth U9’s football side played at the Devon
Finals at St James Park the home of Exeter city. They played Millway beating them comfortably. It is with great
pride that we presented the children with their awards in our celebration assembly today.
Former pupil becomes Senior Prefect
We are delighted to announce that Poppy Greig, a former pupil of Beer C of E Primary School has been selected, as
one of only 10 Year 10 students, as a senior prefect at Axe Valley Community College. The senior prefects are
appointed after a rigorous application process based on their academic record, their wider contribution to the college
and their leadership qualities. Well done Poppy!
After School Orchestral Club – 3.30 – 4.30pm
After half term, West Country School Music is offering an hour’s workshop for a minimum of 10 KS2 children. The
workshops will be a lovely opportunity for the children to experience a variety of orchestral instruments and music
through the eras. The workshops will cost a maximum of £2.50 per class (therefore a maximum of £20 payable in
advance for the half term) and will need a minimum of 10 children to run. Please register your interest on the slip
below.
School Improvement Plan Parent Questionnaire
We have asked that questionnaires be returned by Friday 22nd May. If you have lost the questionnaire but would still
like to complete one, then please pick one up from the leaflet rack outside the school office.

Lost Property
Dylan Arnold’s PE bag has gone missing with his school uniform and school shoes in. Please can everyone check at

Devon County Show
If you do decide to take your child to the Devon County Show on Friday, please fill in the S2 absence request form
(available from the leaflet rack outside the office) and your absence will be authorised.

Puffins at Beer Preschool – Family Bingo Fundraiser
Saturday 6th June in the Beer Social Club, Berry Hill. Doors open at 7pm, eyes down at 8pm. Family fun and lots of
prizes. The proceeds will go towards new ipads and developing the outdoor play area.

May Half Term at Seaton Library
This Half Term, we’re taking part in the first ever Naturally Healthy Week (www.naturaldevon.org.uk) by encouraging everyone
to get out and about and enjoy Devon’s fabulous Natural Health Service with our Family Challenge Trail. The trail will take
you to all sorts of places around Beer where you can enjoy getting out and about for free. There are questions to answer at every
location and everyone who completes the Trail will be awarded a certificate. If you take your certificate back into school after
Half Term, Mr O’Mahoney says he will also give all who finish the trail a HeadTeacher’s Award! You can pick up a copy of the
trail at the Library from Wednesday 20th May.
What If? With Sara Perry
On Wednesday, 27th May, Sara Perry will be coming into the Library with her new book, What If? There’ll be fun and games
with Sara and you can buy a copy of the book – all proceeds will go to the charity Young Minds. Sara will be here from 1011am – the event is free, but we’d be grateful if you could book your place so we have an idea of numbers.
Half Term Bounce and Rhyme
Wednesday, 27th May 9.30am-10am – most suitable for under 5s and their carers, but older siblings who like to sing and dance
are most welcome. No booking needed.
Half Term Storytime
Thursday, 28th May 10 – 10.30am – again, this is mainly Under 5s, but older children who love to hear stories read aloud will be
very welcome. No booking needed.

Seaton Tennis Club
As part of the LTA's Great British Tennis Weekends, Seaton Tennis Club are hosting a special day of tennis
activity on Saturday 16th May from 10am-4pm. (There’s also another one on Saturday 13th June). The
idea is part of a national campaign to raise awareness of local tennis opportunity in the area and to give
everyone a chance to come and play or learn some tennis for free. Unusually for a one day event there
will be literally something for everyone with sessions for all standards of juniors and adults, complete
novices and seasoned players alike. The whole day is free and refreshments are being provided.

Drop In Service for Parents & Carers
Each week Gerry Fry, our Axe Valley parent support worker, is holding a weekly workshop and a drop in service
until the end of July. These are informal sessions led by a parent support advisor which run on Wednesday from
11am to 1pm at Axe Valley Children’s Centre, Trevelyan Building, Fore Street, Seaton. On Wednesday, the focus of
learning and discussion is ‘Strong Wills and Tantrums – Anger Management.’ Anyone is welcome to attend – please
