Bellevue CHURCH OF CHRIST April 5, 2015 SHEPHERDS Bobby Ferrell Merle Grizzell Frank Harrell Ken Petty Nelson Whitfield Bruce Zupa MINISTERS Tom Riley PREACHING Daniel Palk INVOLVEMENT Blake McCaskill YOUTH John Kennedy COUNSELING CHILDREN’S COORDINATOR Wendy Rampy OFFICE Karen Villers Cynthia Walker The Resurrected Christ While the grandbabies were here for a visit last week, Julie McBrayer Loveless brought something by my office to share with Ani. It was a box of Easter eggs that told the story of Jesus. Later, Ani opened the blue egg and found a donkey, so I told her about Jesus riding into Jerusalem. What a crowd: “Hosanna!” She opened the yellow egg and found a chalice, so I told her about Jesus and the Last Supper. Then, praying hands, a rooster, some coins, a flagellum, a crown of thorns, nails, a spear, a linen cloth, and a stone. Finally, we opened the empty egg— representing the tomb that was found empty at the resurrection of Christ. If you’re a parent who wants your children to believe that the Easter Bunny is real, you might want to hide this from them right now. He’s not. The Easter Bunny is not real. It’s strange how we want to celebrate everything except those matters of eternal importance. We hype Santa at Christmas, the Easter Bunny at Easter, and the Tooth Fairy anytime a tooth falls out. Here’s the danger. If we put forward fairy tales as truth, what are children to believe? If we emphasize make-believe characters with more enthusiasm than we celebrate the reality of Christ, we have only ourselves to blame when children grow up and don’t believe any of it. They throw the baby Jesus out with Santa. They throw the resurrected Lord out with the bunny. They discount Jesus as just another myth. Each day is important to God and every moment can bring glory to God (Col. 2:1617). Each first day of the week is a time for celebrating the victory we have because of the death and resurrection of Christ (Cf., Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2). However, it’s worth noting that the Jewish Passover happens at a specific time each year. While we’re not Jews by ethnicity (at least I’m not), and in Christ we’re not required to keep the Passover as a matter of faith; Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection did happen in conjunction with Passover. No wonder all of Christendom thinks about it during this season. While each day is important, and while each first day of the week is a time for gathering to remember Christ’s death and resurrection; still, what better time to engage the world with the ultimate truth of Christ’s resurrection? It’s perfectly natural! We gain nothing by replacing it with make-believe stories. Ani enjoyed getting some candy in eggs, but she was absolutely enthralled when I told her the true events surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the Son of God. —Tom Riley PHILIPPIANS 3:10 WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS! Brad Johnson is helping with the relief effort and made us aware of the urgent need of these people. Brad is in contact with Eric Brandell, a missionary on the island, and is assisting in putting together a relief container to ship there. Included in the relief supplies are much needed water filtration systems from Healing Hands International and our Ron White. Checks can be made out to the Bellevue Church of Christ with a memo “Vanuatu Relief Effort”.
