A work-space ahead of its time. In 1959, world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen began designs for a work environment like the world had never seen. The facility’s unique open plan enabled brilliant minds to roam, collaborate and converse—fostered by the seamless interplay between design and nature. Here at Bell Labs, researchers developed the breakthrough inventions that would usher in the modern age. History 23 1933 1947 1958 Karl Jansky discovers three types of static: nearby thunderstorms, distant thunderstorms, and the center of the Milky Way, at Crawford Hill, Holmdel, NJ. Invented by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley, this fundamental building block of modern electronic devices won the Nobel Prize in 1956.
