Mike Brothers and Sisters, As next week we prepare to celebrate Pentecost, I thought I would offer a portion of the homily that Pope Francis preached last year. I offer this for your reflection: “Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under control, if we are the ones who build, program and plan our lives in accordance with our own ideas, our own comfort, our own preferences. This is also the case when it comes to God. Often we follow him, we accept him, but only up to a certain point. It is hard to abandon ourselves to him with complete trust, allowing the Holy Spirit to be the soul and guide of our lives in our every decision. We fear that God may force us to strike out on new paths and leave behind our all too narrow, closed and selfish horizons in order to become open to his own. Yet throughout the history of salvation, whenever God reveals himself, he brings newness and change, and demands our complete trust: Noah, mocked by all, builds an ark and is saved; Abram leaves his land with only a promise in hand; Moses stands up to the might of Pharaoh and leads his people to freedom; the apostles, huddled fearfully in the Upper Room, go forth Grove City, Pennsylvania with courage to proclaim the Gospel. This is not a question of novelty for novelty's sake, the search for something new to relieve our boredom, as is so often the case in our own day. The newness which God brings into our life is something that actually brings fulfilment, that gives true joy, true serenity, because God loves us and desires only our good. Let us ask ourselves: Are we open to Gods surprises? Or are we closed and fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we have the courage to strike out along the new paths which Gods newness sets before us, or do we resist, barricaded in transient structures which have lost their capacity for openness to what is new?” Lots of hope, Fr. Mike Acts 1: 15-17, 20-26 The number twelve is significant in Israel's salvation history, and as Luke demonstrates in today's reading first reading, that number continues to be symbolic for early Christianity. The twelve tribes of Israel become the twelve apostles of Jesus. With Judas Iscariot’s betrayal, Peter, acting as the leader among those gathered, proposes that a new apostle be chosen. The major criteria include participation in the life and ministry of Jesus from baptism until Jesus’ death. Matthias is chosen by lot, but once named and the Twelve are complete, Matthias does not appear again in Acts of the Apostles. 1 John 4: 11-16 First John is written to a community beset by theological struggles. Some members were attracted to an emerging heresy called Gnosticism, which held that only certain people possessed the secret knowledge that would lead to salvation. In response, First john lists requirements for true membership drawn from the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John. We must love one another (John 13: 34-35; 1 John 4: 11). If we love, God resided within us (John 15: 4, 1 john 4: 12). God’s spirit is given as a testimony to God’s enduring presence (John 14: 16-17, 1 John 4: 13). We are called to testify to what we have seen (John 15: 27; 1 John 4: 14). Abiding by this standard of love assures that we remain in God’s love (John 15: 10, 1 John 4: 16). Today’s Question: What are the chief joys and hopes of the people I know? What are their griefs and anxieties? Marriage Moments Praying together as a couple can be a deep and perhaps awkward form of intimacy. It takes great trust to pour out your heart to God in the presence of your spouse. A first step may be praying for each other even if not in one another's presence. A second step may be silent meditation in each other's presence. Take a step this week. A Family Perspective Jesus was worried about his disciples and he turned to prayer. No matter how much time we spent trying to “guard and protect” our children, each day they become less dependent on us and we must let go and let God. Prayer and parenting go together.
