Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse are two of 167 national historic sites operated by Parks Canada
to protect and present significant examples of our nation’s heritage.
Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site interprets the national historic significance of the Victoria-Esquimalt
fortifications. From 1878 until 1956, a series of coast artillery fortifications guarded Victoria and the
naval base in Esquimalt harbour. Originally a link in the worldwide chain of defences for the British
Empire, the Victoria-Esquimalt Fortress grew and changed with time to deal with new technologies and
new threats to Canada’s west coast.
Fisgard Lighthouse, built in 1860, was the first permanent lighthouse on Canada’s rugged Pacific coast.
Originally perched on Fisgard Island, it is today one on the rare lighthouses accessible by land thanks
to a causeway built in 1950. Both the lighthouse tower and the attached keeper’s dwelling are original
structures.
Parks Canada proudly preserves the national treasures that are an important part of Canada’s heritage.
These national historic sites are significant to coastal British Columbia and are known as some of
Victoria‘s most recognizable icons. Located only 15 km west of Victoria, they offer a vast range of

You may choose to have a gathering at one of our picnic areas or a more formal reception at a private
facility in one of the neighbouring communities. We suggest contacting one of the many lodges,
hotels or golf courses in the area, several of which specialize in wedding receptions.
oTENTik: Fall Asleep in the Present and Wake Up in the Past
Experience life within the fort’s walls as you fall asleep to the ocean and nature’s soothing sounds; and
be taken back over 50 years ago when soldiers’ families inhabited Fort Rodd Hill during their summer
camp-out.
The oTENTik tents, exclusive to Parks Canada, offer a unique blend of homey comfort and a taste of
outdoor adventure. It’s a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy camping with the comfort of a bed,
inside the fort, already set up and ready to go. A cross between a tent and a rustic cabin, this type of
accommodation is the perfect way for families, friends and couples to discover the joys of camping
