Peg Kiebach’s relationship with Berks Encore began with her use of APPRISE Medicare counseling services for her mother, and continued when Peg became a Meals on Wheels volunteer post-retirement. As her involvement in Berks Encore grew, so did her appreciation for Berks Encore’s mission. When she was invited to become a board member, she jumped at the chance: “It was a way to give back and learn more about the services provided by Berks Encore to the senior citizens of Berks County.” Peg joined the Berks Encore Board of Directors in June 2013 and volunteered to be part of the Senior Expo Committee in addition to helping the day of the Expo. She volunteers in numerous other ways, including at the annual summer picnic and her once-a-month Meals on Wheels route from the Wernersville Center, and fills in as a volunteer wherever needed at Berks Encore events. “I enjoy every minute of it, and am amazed at the staff of Berks Encore, who all go way above and beyond their duties to help seniors,” Peg says. “They are constantly looking for ways to improve and expand services in an ever-changing environment.” Peg is continuing her busy pace of service with Berks Encore. In 2015, she joined the Black Tie Bingo Committee, which is planning Berks Encore’s 50th anniversary gala event in December. “I’m looking forward to a successful 50th anniversary celebration to honor and highlight Berks Encore,” Peg explains. Peg lives in South Heidelberg Township with her husband, Dennis, who also volunteers for Berks Encore, and their two senior golden retrievers. She enjoys watching her four grandsons play sports, traveling with friends, and taking the dogs for walks. Peg also serves as Treasurer and volunteer for the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue in Reinholds, PA, and is involved with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Womelsdorf. Aimed at seniors, it is a 45-minute strength training workout including weights and bands. Here is an important fact: more than 1 in 3 adults aged 65 and older fall in a given year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Slips and falls are the main cause of senior injuries. Falls can lead to debilitating injuries. Every day, nearly one million seniors are treated in hospital emergency rooms from injuries sustained at home. If you are a senior or you have aging parents living independently, safety is key to freedom and security at home. Conducting your own senior home safety assessment designed to address safety issues can make the home a safer place. A complete room-to-room assessment of your home can provide safety recommendations to help prevent a fall. You will need to check all electrical and telephone cords; carpets, mats and runners; bathroom handrails and clutter. FOR EXAMPLE: Are your small rugs and runners slip resistant? SAFETY TIPS • Remove all rugs and runners that tend to slide. • Purchase new rugs with slip resistant backing. • Apply rubber backing to all rugs. • Check rugs and mats periodically. Are any cords (telephone, lamp extension) in the flow of traffic? SAFETY TIPS • Move the phone so that telephone cords will not lie where people walk. • Place cords on the floor against a wall where people can not trip over it. • Arrange furniture so that outlets are available for lamps and appliances. These are just two important safety steps to consider. It is important not to wait for something to happen, but to take preventative steps to give everyone a piece of mind. Did you know a stroke occurs about every 40 seconds? A stroke, also known as brain attack, is always a medical emergency. It is extremely important to call 911 if a stroke is suspected, because seconds count in treating stroke patients. This article will focus on explaining what stroke is, the signs and symptoms of stroke, risk factors of stroke and stroke prevention. Sharing information on strokes is very important because up to 80 percent of strokes may be prevented. The brain does not store oxygen or nutrients so a continuous supply is provided by the bloodstream. A stroke occurs when there is disruption of the blood flow in the brain and as a result, brain cells are lost. When the disruption is caused by a blockage, the stroke is called ischemic. The overwhelming majority of strokes are ischemic. If a blood vessel in the brain bursts or leaks, the stroke is called hemorrhagic. For each minute that stroke is untreated, 1.9 million brain cells may die. The acronym FAST is used to recognize stroke warning signs: F is for face. Is the person’s face drooping on one side or numb? A is for arms. Is there one sided weakness? When holding the arms up is one side drifting? S is for speech. Is the person unable to speak, slurring words, or not making sense when speaks? T is for time. Call 911 immediately if stroke signs are present. Knowing the risk factors for a stroke is important because stroke may be preventable. While some risk factors are not controllable, like family history or age, many other risk factors can be improved. Certain medical conditions increase a person’s chance of having a stroke. These conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes with high blood sugars, obesity, and atrial fibrillation. One of the first things that the principal did when I began was take me to observe a person deemed “one of the best teachLinda Baer ers on staff.” That teacher was Linda Baer, a high school English teacher. I became reacquainted with Linda when I became a member of The Friends of Berks County Public Libraries (BCPL) a few years ago. The 23-member system of public libraries of Berks County is committed to the provision of consistent, high-quality service to county residents of all ages. The mission of Berks County Public Libraries is countywide development, coordination, and promotion of public library services. The Friends of Berks County Public Libraries is a volunteer, non-profit association dedicated to improving the services provided by all public libraries in Berks County. Linda’s parents returned to Berks County from California when she was an infant. Retiring from teaching after 30 years, Linda took on a new challenge working as Special Projects Co- For Funeral & Cremation Care ordinator at the main location of The Reading Public Library. She joined the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries in 2002 and soon after became their president, a position she still holds. Linda has attained several noteworthy accomplishments as a Friend of BCPL. She spends many hours helping with Book Bonanza, raising several hundreds of dollars for the libraries that provides funding for the Summer Reading Program at each library. She has edited BOOKENDS, the award-winning BCPL newsletter. In 2010, Linda was awarded the Dreisbach Award for exemplary service to Berks County Libraries. In addition, Linda has been instrumental in bringing several world-renowned authors to Berks County including John Grogan, Jennifer Chiaverini, Jodi Picoult, and Kathryn Stockett. On October 8, 2015 at the Miller Center, the Friends of BCPL will be bringing another author to Berks County. Elizabeth Berg has been on the New York Times Bestseller list multiple times. Durable Goods and Joy School were both selected as one of the American Library Association’s Best Books of the Year. Copies of Ms. Berg’s new book, The Dream Lover, a historical novel based on the Parisian life of the nineteenth-century writer George Sand, will be available for purchase and signing at the event. That is an excellent beginning to 2015 trips. Many trips are full, but there is room on several of them. There is room on the following trips at this time: May 14 to Rainbow Dinner Theatre – “Hallelujah Girls” – Price $62 June 25 to Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre – “Oklahoma” – Price $68 September 9 to a Mystery Trip – Price $70. Marilyn says the trip is highly recommended. The only thing we know about it is that we have a choice of chicken Francaise, chicken marsala, chicken parmesan, filet of salmon, or penne vodka. That is always disappointing. Our meeting in March went off without a hitch. The lunch of hot dogs and homemade macaroni salad was really good. The entertainer, Peggy Keller, vocals, was excellent. I heard many people make comments that she was good and they really enjoyed the program. In April we had our Pot Luck Dinner. Everyone that attends brings a food item. Alan Wenrich, chairman of the Pot Luck Luncheon, sent the sign-up sheet around to everyone at the March meeting to sign up for an item to bring on April 13 for admittance to lunch. It seems that Mother Nature and SBMSC are on the same schedule and she always wins. We missed seeing all the friendly faces because of the weather, but the really neat thing is that we had 2 desserts. Both were frozen from our cancelled meetings. The February fastnachts were thawed and actually were pretty good, especially with ice cream on the side. Ah, “yes dear,” I know that I had seconds, but I really meant to watch my diet. I lost my notes, and am up against a deadline, so I do not have much to report about club activities. One big disappointment that stands out in my mind is that our April Dinner/Theater trip was cancelled because of lack of interest. I know that Kitty was very disappointed, along with those who signed up, especially because of all the work that she did in putting the trip together. I do not know why there wasn’t much interest in this trip, because people say that they joined SBMSC fro the fellowship and bus trips. Maybe it’s because seniors do not like to eat out! The good news: plans are nearly completed for our annual mystery trip. This year it will be a day trip. Kitty always does a super job of putting these trips together, so I am looking forward to this one. I asked if she could give a hint so that I would have something to write and she laughed at me.
