Senior Civic Issue Discussion The Los Alamos AARP chapter is promoting a monthly Senior Civic Issue Discussion Group. The objective of the discussions is to better understand the important, sometimes controversial, issues that face our community, our state, our nation, and the world. We envision a discussion group that is primarily informational, non-partisan, and participatory. The group would focus on clearly defining the issues and evaluating the consequences of potential solutions or of the status quo. Since there is no shortage of important topics, the first meeting will be devoted to defining and prioritizing particular topics of interest and setting up a schedule. If you have suggestions or want additional information, please send an email to [email protected], call Joe D’Anna at 505-672-9371, or just come to the first meeting. The first meeting will be held in the BESC classroom at 10:00 AM on Monday May 11 with the intention of meeting on the second Monday of each month. Mark your calendar. All are welcome. We do lunch Like nobody does lunch! If you haven’t been to the BESC for lunch in a while, you are missing out! On Wednesdays and Fridays we have live piano music by Winnie Berry and Tom Oliphant respectively. Every day, you will now find a salad bar that can complement your entrée or be your entire meal. And, now starting in May, you can help yourself to your own portions of the menu items at our hot bar or our food service staff will happily serve up your plate as they always have. The choice is yours! Join your friends and make new ones! Lunch service lasts from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays. The suggested donation remains at $4.00 for persons over 60. The completion date on the library is still June-July, so the Senior Center should be moved to The Hive by early July. Much discussion over alternative funding for the commercial kitchen ended in an action item for LARSO to develop a proposal to the County Council for kitchen funding. by Glenn Lockhart Page 8 LAVA Los Alamos Volunteer Association [email protected] Betty Ehart Senior Center Phone 662-8923 Irene Powell, Director “Our bodies may be getting older but we will always be young at heart.” SPOTLIGHT Kay Ingram, jill-of-all trades here at the senior center will be retiring from our ranks. But it is not goodbye. We will still enjoy her presence when she comes to sub for us either in the transportation office or LAVA office. She started as a driver years ago with LARSO and has delivered meals and worked in the transportation office as a substitute for Ruth. She has done meal assessments and in recent years been the LAVA assistant where she not only did the timesheets, schedule volunteers, file, work with the Quilters, make endless phone calls to volunteers but would step in when needed as a meal helper and receptionist. Her wonderful smile brightens up our days and lifts our spirits. Her positive attitude has been an inspiration to us all. Her patience and kindness will be remembered. I will greatly miss you Kay. Thank you for all the help you have been to me in the LAVA office. - Irene BLOOD DRIVE If you can help serve food or register donors, United Blood Service will have the next drive May 2729. Yes, they will try a 3-day drive again like they used to do. So it will be Wednesday through Friday. Times are different; call 662-8923 if you can volunteer for a shift. Thanks to the Hospital Auxiliary who gives LAVA money to buy the sandwiches and chips that are a big draw to blood donors. HISTORY DOCENTS Want to learn all about the proud history of Los Alamos? Find your way on Thursdays until June 11 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. to the Hans Bethe House, 1350 Bathtub Row, where there will be courses on the history of Los Alamos and how to engage with visitors. No registration or commitment - open to everyone. But we hope you will consider being a docent for the Historical Society after this training. CLEAN UP LOS ALAMOS Saturday, May 2, is spring cleaning for Los Alamos. Help by getting out and helping downtown or on your street, help a neighbor. Call 662-8163 for free leather gloves and plastic bags to put all the trash in that you pick up. The Eco station will allow free trash disposal to all Los Alamos County residents that day. There will be an appreciation lunch at Ashley Pond 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. for all volunteers. Bring your full trash bags then. They will have a big bin to collect them and save yourself a trip to the Eco Station. Call the Fire Department, 662-8304, if you need minor tree trimming or work for fire mitigation or if you know someone who needs help in this area. Forest fires are bad enough but a town fire is inexcusable. 42ND ANNUAL APPRECIATION CELEBRATION If you weren’t at the BESC on April 17 from 3:00-5:00 p.m., you missed the party! There was music and dancing to the music of ”My Blue Heaven”. There were door prizes and lots of food. This was National Volunteer Week so it was a great time for LAVA to celebrate with our wonderful volunteers. We appreciate you and the work that you do! Please keep up the good work, for your sake as well as for those you help. By doing this you have indeed changed the face of aging! See page 1 for pictures of this celebration. Irene Powell and Kay Ingram Page 9 A Matter of Balance Attention Current and Former Nuclear Weapons Workers Q: Do you or a member of your family have an illness such as cancer, beryllium disease, or another condition, which you think may have been caused by toxic exposure in the workplace? Q: Were you employed at a Department of Energy facility, with a beryllium vendor, or in the uranium mining industry? IF YOU ANSWERED YES: You may be eligible for benefits under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). The EEOICPA is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. It provides monetary compensation and medical benefits to individuals who became ill as a result of working in the nuclear weapons industry. Survivors of qualified workers may also be entitled to benefits. LARSO Board Elections At 12:15 p.m. during lunch on Friday, May 15, senior center members will be asked to vote for LARSO Board members. We have two Board members who are up for re-election and one vacancy. Nominations from the floor will be accepted as long as the nominee has agreed to serve. Please plan to attend and participate in this important process for our non-profit organization. Have you had a fall or are you worried about having one? Know someone who’s had a fall or is fearful of falling? There’s a class for that! A 5-session training course will be offered starting on Friday, May 29, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Trainings will be each Friday morning through June 26th. The training, known as A Matter of Balance, is based on research done at Boston University and is nationally recognized as an excellent way to help people reduce the incidence of falling. Every session will include an exercise component. Instructors: Loretta Stubbs, Personal Trainer & Pauline Schneider, Senior Center Director Suggested Donation: $25.00 and the purchase of a Theraband for $4.00 is recommended. Topics to be covered: Concerns About Falling Preventing Falls & Fractures Improving Your Balance Recognizing & Changing Fall-ty Habits Home Safety Issues & Solutions Please contact the Betty Ehart Senior Center at 662-8920 to register. According to the Administration for Community Living, “unintentional injuries to this population (seniors) result in at least 6 million medically treated injuries and more than 30,000 deaths every year.” Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65+. More than 21,700 older adults die from falls each year, and every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an Emergency Department for a fall-related injury. The direct medical cost of falls is currently estimated to top $36 billion annually and is expected to grow to nearly $62 billion by 2020. New Mexico is second in the nation for senior falls. Yet, falls are not a normal part of aging, and they can be prevented through a combination of interventions. These include exercising, getting a fall risk assessment, reviewing medications, having vision and hearing checked, and making the home environment safe.
