Fasten off. Attach a contrasting color, single crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join. (To make a thicker contrasting edge, use 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, and skip every 5th stitch.) MAKE THE MOHAWK TOP: Place the hat flat on a hard surface to identify a row of stitches in the center of the hat. 1. Cut yarn in 6 inch lengths. (Prepare multiple strands by winding the yarn around a 6 inch piece of cardboard.) 2. Use 6 to 8 strands for each tuft, depending on how thick you would like it to be. 3. Fold the group of strands in half. See photo 1. 4. Pull the fold through a stitch in the hat, see photo 2. (Optional: Start and end approximately 1 to 1 ½ inches from the bottom edge of the hat to prevent the Mohawk falling onto the forehead, or tickling the neck in the back.) 5. Open the fold and place 2 fingers through, see photo 3. 6. Grasp the ends of the yarn, and pull them through the loop. Photo 4. 7. Tug to settle the stitches. See photo 5. 8. Trim evenly. Photo 6.
