To our patrons,
There’s something happening here…something thrilling…
something fresh…something on the cusp of exploding into
something…more. There’s something happening here, and you’ll
want to jump on board and take the ride.
Blackfriars has been a Rochester standard for 65 years. It flourished
under daring and visionary leadership. It championed the ideals of
diverse and challenging storytelling, breath-taking visuals, fearless
and original voices, and it lovingly and passionately invested in the
artistry of local talent. We promise to stay true to those ideals, while
pushing boundaries into new realms, with bold, new voices. We wish
to build on the foundation of this theatre we love, towards a world
of something…more.
And we want you to be a part of it.
SIX new artistic and educational partners, ONE more show in your
subscription series, TWO new season events and we haven’t even
mentioned the new educational components. Nazareth College and
RIT share their visual design, technical theatre and acting students
with us; Canary in a Coal Mine and Unleashed! Improv bring the
funny to our brand spanking new Blackfriars
Comedy Series; side by side with Writers
& Books, we’ll unleash a new, harrowing
theatrical experience with the 24 Hour
Musical Theatre Festival, and AwardWinning PUSH Physical Theatre unveils
a World Premiere event!
Thrilling. Fresh. On the cusp of
something…more.
Jump on board and take the ride.

A FEW GOOD MEN
by Aaron Sorkin
Written by acclaimed film and television
writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The
Social Network) this electrically charged
production finds two marines facing a court
martial on suspicion of murder. Their hope:
Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, a Junior Grade
lawyer, more interested in softball and
plea bargains than what really happened.
Prodded by his team, Kaffee eventually
makes a valiant effort to defend his clients
and, in doing so, raises questions of what it
means to have honor, dignity and humanity
in an increasingly complex world.
Directed by Danny Hoskins

“Emma and the dying Ulysses are full of
bitter regret — and the kind of gallows
humor that derives from raw courage. We
are privileged to have met them.”
Los Angeles Times
ANNAPURNA
by Sharr White
After twenty years apart, Emma tracks
Ulysses to a trailer park in the middle of
nowhere for a final reckoning. What unfolds
is a visceral and profound meditation on
love and loss with the simplest of theatrical
elements: two people in one room. A
breathtaking story about the longevity of
love.

THE GAME’S AFOOT
OR HOLMES
FOR THE HOLIDAYS
by Ken Ludwig
In Ken Ludwig’s (Lend Me A Tenor, Fox on the
Fairway) latest comedy, it’s Christmas Eve,
1936 and Broadway star William Gillette,
admired the world over for his leading role
in the play Sherlock Holmes, is hosting his
friends for a weekend of revelry. But when
one of the guests is stabbed to death, it’s
up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the
persona of his beloved Holmes, to track
down the killer before the next victim
appears. The danger and hilarity are nonstop in this glittering whodunit set during
the Christmas holidays.

PUSH Physical Theatre’s
JEKYLL
&
HYDE
based on ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde’ by Robert Louis Stevenson
Every man is both good and evil, every one a sinner
and a brother…But what if he could peel himself
apart, carving one right out of the other?
In an innovative and harrowing retelling of
the iconic tale, Dr. Henry Jekyll delves into
the exotic-his own psyche, ripping himself
apart, piece by piece-emptying out the villainy
within, only to tear away the darkest parts
of his being, creating another creature, the
broken and mangled Edward Hyde. Gutted of
guilt and conscience, Hyde is free to commit
the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend.
As sanity and reality blur and as the blood begins to
rise…which man will be the master and which will
be the lie?

PROOF
by David Auburn
On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday,
Catherine, a troubled young woman, has
spent years caring for her brilliant but
unstable father, a famous mathematician.
Now, following his death, she must deal
with her own volatile emotions - the arrival
of her estranged sister, Claire, and the
attentions of Hal, a former student of her
father’s who hopes to find valuable work in
the 103 notebooks her father left behind.
Over the long weekend that follows, a
burgeoning romance and the discovery of
a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into
the most difficult problem of all: How much
of her father’s madness - or genius - will she
inherit?

HEATHERS, THE MUSICAL
Music, Book & Lyrics by
Lawrence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy
Based on the 1989 cult classic film, Heathers,
The Musical is the darkly delicious story of
Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage
misfit who hustles her way into the most
powerful and ruthless clique - the Heathers.
But before she can get comfortable,
Veronica falls for the dangerously sexy new
kid J.D., who has his own dark plans for
the students of Westerberg High. Brought
to you by the award-winning creative team
of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, Desperate
Housewives), Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy,
Legally Blonde), Heathers, The Musical is a
hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new show
based on the greatest teen comedy of all
time. Are you in, or are you out?

BEEHIVE, THE 60s MUSICAL
Created by Larry Gallagher
Beehive is a jukebox musical celebrating the
iconic women artists and girl groups of
the ’60s, while documenting the dramatic
changes that America underwent - from the
earliest part of the decade, when innocent
and fun tunes were the order of the day
(“The Name Game,” “One Fine Day,”
“Judy’s Turn to Cry,” “Will You Love Me
Tomorrow”) to the mid ’60s, when unrest
was in the air (“The Beat Goes On,” “You
Don’t Own Me”) and finally to the era of
women discovering their own empowerment
(“Natural Woman,” “Society’s Child,” “Me
and Bobby McGee”). Beehive will have you
dancing in the aisles, singing along and
reliving music’s golden era and a dramatic
turning point in our nation’s history.
