Boaz Middle School
The Boaz Middle School Physical Education
Department sponsored a "Hoops For Heart" program
with proceeds going to the American Heart
Association. The school raised over $3,000 this year
during the second and third weeks of February.
Some of the events were Wrap the Teacher Day, Sing
Your Heart Out Competition, Faculty vs. Students
Basketball Game, Popcorn Movie Day, Shooting Stars
Competition, a homeroom competition and many
other fun events that raised money for the American
Heart Association. Mrs. Kerr's class raised the most
money and received a doughnut party, and Amy
Machen won the "most" money raised for the teacher
wrap competition. The Boaz Middle School faculty
also got involved by having a Healthy Food Day and
celebrated heart month by eating a healthy meal. The
students and faculty worked hand-in-hand to raise
the money and had a great time doing it!
Boaz High School
Boaz High School is currently seeking nominations for the newly-established
Boaz High School Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame. This prestigious
award honors individuals whose deeds or character exemplify outstanding
achievement in their life’s work and/or service to their communities. The
honoree’s spirit and leadership are worthy of recognition and have inspired
praise and gratitude among his or her peers.
The first class is scheduled to be inducted on October 23, 2015. The
inductees will be feted with an induction luncheon, followed by a school
assembly where students will meet the inductees and have the opportunity
to interact with them. Additionally, inductees will attend the pep rally that afternoon for the BoazGuntersville football game, and they will be recognized on the field before the game that night.
The anonymous selection committee is hard at work sifting through nomination forms, and they are
looking for as many nominees as possible to form a solid pool for selections. Nomination categories
follow the Boaz High School academy model. The categories for nomination are as follows:
 Business, Education, Law, Military, Religion
 Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics
 Health, Hospitality, Human Services
 Entertainment, Arts, Sports, Media

School office.
Snead State Community College
Snead State Community College inducted a record number of
students into the Theta Iota chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor
Society during the spring induction held Tuesday, March 10.
The officers for the student organization set a goal of increasing its
membership by 50 percent at the spring induction. To support the
group’s efforts, the Snead State Foundation committed up to $4,000
to help students with a financial need to pay the membership dues
into the honor society. A couple of members of the President’s
Cabinet also committed funds to help pay the membership dues for
students with a financial need. The PTK officers started in January
with an awareness campaign educating students on the value of Phi Theta Kappa.
“We issued 352 invitations to students to join, and we inducted 161students. That is a 45.7
percent acceptance rate,” said PTK Advisor and Director of Campus Engagement Brittany Goble.
In fact, according the Phi Theta Kappa’s chapter progress report, the combined inductees for Fall
2013 plus Spring 2014 was only 117.
It was standing room only during the spring induction, held in Fielder Auditorium. “It was
inspiring to see all of the family and employees pile into the auditorium in support of our
students and their achievements. Our officers worked very hard to increase membership, and
their efforts really paid off,” said Mrs. Goble.
Snead State President Dr. Robert Exley, a past National President of Phi Theta Kappa, shared with
the inductees the Top 10 life lessons learned from his involvement with Phi Theta Kappa.
“It’s OK to be a member of Nerd Nation,” Dr. Exley told the students proudly, referring to the
theme for the International Convention. “Nerd Nation” is a moniker for the high achieving
members of PTK. The students must achieve a minimum 3.5 GPA upon completing at least 12
semester credit hours to qualify for membership in the organization.
“The Phi Theta Kappa Honors Topics teach us more even without a grade,” Dr. Exley said. The
Honors in Action project is a study topic that is timely and relevant to the human experience in a
global context. The purpose is to foster a stimulating environment for intellectual growth and
challenge and to create opportunities for leadership and learning as leaders through service and
advocacy.
Other lessons Dr. Exley shared with the inductees and their supporters include recognizing PTK
faculty advisors because of the difference they make with students, knowing chapter
accomplishments are “sweeter” than individual accomplishments, acknowledging the strong
friendships forged upon the anvil of Phi Theta Kappa service projects, and building courage and
self-confidence through engagement in PTK.
Dr. Exley also provided examples to illustrate the lesson that “Phi Theta Kappans really are
smarter.” Fellow Phi Theta Kappans include astronaut Fred Haise, United Nations Ambassadors
Dr. Jean Kirkpatrick, PBS News Journalist Jim Lehrer, businessman H. Ross Perot, and Country
Music Star Trisha Yearwood.
The final lessons he shared with the students included sharing what a life altering experience
serving as a Phi Theta Kappa officer can be, knowing that PTK members always finish what they
start by graduating, and sharing that PTK marriages are made to last, as evidenced by Dr. Exley’s
marriage to his wife Anita. They met through membership in the Mu Omicron Chapter at San
Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas.
The spring induction ceremony was led by the current PTK officers: President Amanda Lee,
Vice-President of Leadership Caitlin Motes of Boaz, Vice-President of Service Jessica Webb of
Albertville, Vice-President of Scholarship Will Hunt of Crossville, Vice-President of Fellowship
Erica Mason of Albertville, Public Relations Officer Hayley Lightsey of Altoona, and Recording
Officer Colton Pendley of Albertville.
