We had 85 people who presented to donate, and at the end of the day, we were able to provide the Red Cross with 72 pints! That is 10 more than our goal of 62. The Account Executive from the Red Cross said that this was one of the best Blood Drives he has participated in at BHS. Great work, everyone! On Saturday, March 14th, four BHS Heroes participated in the Howard Center's Curling Competition again this year, which we placed first in last year. Those students were juniors Mabel Prine, Beth McKegney, Keana Moreau and Georgia Essig. There were over 40 student and adult teams participating in the event, and our team placed third overall, beating Rice in the end to receive the bronze medal! Our Heroes also received an award for being the high school to raise the most money for the Howard Center! On Friday, March 27th, BHS Heroes will be Sleeping Out for Spectrum Youth and Family Services. Over 80 students have signed up, the largest student group from one school to participate this year. There is a parent meeting for all students participating at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday, March 25 in the BHS Cafeteria. On Friday, April 3rd, BHS Heroes is hosting their second annual Fashion Show for VT Special Olympics. This will be held in BHS' auditorium at 7:30pm. Will Lynch competed in the National High School Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Armory in Manhattan, New York City this weekend. He finished at 6 feet 1.5 inches, 21st out of 45 competitors from around the US. Congratulations Will! The BHS Model United Nations Club sent five delegates to North Country Model UN Conference in Champlain, New York. In attendance were Turner Allen, Olivia Nadworny, Jacob Bucci, Luke Steele and Elnur Delahmetovic. MUN advisor Gaelan Chutter‐Ames and Social Studies teacher Ron MacNeil accompanied the group. The BHS A Team composed of Isaiah Mindich, Sterling Ford, Oscar Smith, and Bobby Treadwell won the Vermont Championship of the National History Bowl and Bee on Saturday March 14, 2015. The team won all their matches and qualified for the national championship in Washington D.C. in April. BHS alumnus Kevin Commo is the team's advisor. In the individual category, Sterling Ford placed second in the state. Pascale Gulick and Ajla Medic were chosen to represent BHS at the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association's Annual Senior All‐Star Game at Windsor High School. Congratulations! Kathryn Turnbull represented BHS at the Vermont State Poetry Out Loud Competition. Over 5,000 Vermont students participated in the program this year. Elementary, middle, and high school strings musicians gathered at BHS on Thursday evening in the 6th Annual Orchestra Night to celebrate a night of music. Thank you to teacher Ed Owens for helping to organize this parent‐ friendly, crowd‐pleasing event! New 11th grade testing is coming! Called the SBAC (Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium), these tests happen the mornings of April 7 and 8 (English) and 14 and 15 (Math). We will have a delayed start at 11:00 a.m. these days to make sure these new computer tests go well. 11th graders please be aware of these dates, and you will start seeing practice questions in classes to help you prepare for the tests. English Language Learner students take required oral, writing, reading, and listening WIDA ACCESS state/national tests the next four weeks to assess progress in language learning. NCAA Information Med Mentors Med Mentors aims to engage, guide, and impact high school students in the community interested in careers in the healthcare field. Med Mentors embraces the mission, vision, and values of The University of Vermont Medical Center and builds upon them by: Establishing mentor/mentee relationships that are both dynamic and reciprocal, where the mentor is invested in facilitating academic and professional growth within the mentee. Offering advice, career mentoring, classroom experience, and clinical exposure. Educating students on the different health professions and provide insight into the demands of those fields. Instilling in each student the drive to be a life‐long learner and foster a genuine excitement about the possibility of a career in a healthcare field. Med Mentors would like to invite interested students to the University of Vermont College of Medicine for a day (8 AM‐2PM) of medical exploration on April 4th. The event will include the following experiences: Learn how to conduct a proper physical examination handling many of the instruments used in primary care practice. Learn about the basic principles of surgical suturing and practice surgical ties and ligature techniques. Explore many of the different training tools used to teach surgeons in clinical practice. Explore many of the different diagnostic imaging tools and learn how to conduct a basic ultrasound exam. Experiment with the patient simulator, which models a myriad of cardiac abnormalities, and learn how to diagnose a condition through a stethoscope Participate in a lunch panel discussion with various health care professionals in Physical Therapy, Nursing, Surgery, Medicine, Psychology, etc. Under the supervision of a Medical Pathologist, explore the University’s Pathology Lab. College Information Student Summer Opportunity From Husky: It is with great pleasure and excitement that we are announcing our second year of the Husky Injection Molding Systems Summer Institute for the summer of 2015. We will invite up to 10 students that have completed their junior year in high school and are about to enter their senior year. Successful students will participate in the CNC Machining Fundamentals program. Successful graduates of this Fundamentals program this summer would then be invited back next year to participate in the CNC Machining Advance Concepts program. The program is an 8‐week paid summer internship and pre‐apprenticeship that combines 4 hours of classroom education each day, 4 hours of job shadowing/work experience in a number of areas throughout the production areas, and a combination of didactic and applied learning. The program’s focus is on CNC (computer numeric control) machining and is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore this field as a possible career and to establish a foundation from which to start a career. The course materials include Blueprint Reading, Introduction to Apprenticeships/Internships, Machine Tool Math, Introduction to Inspection, Machining Processes I, and CNC – G&M Code Programming.
