CHECKED SCARF FOR HIM
This easy project combines simple stitches
with color work to create a sophisticated
scarf pattern.
Materials: Approximately 120 yards each of
3 colors of any sport weight yarn (sample:
Austermann, Seta)
A=brown, B=rust, C=white
Gauge: 26 sts=4 inches
Needle: size 4 needle
Finished size:4 ¾ inches by 45 inches
Terms: wyib=hold yarn in back, wyif=hold
yarn in front, k=knit, p=purl, sts=stitches
Checked Pattern (worked as a multiple
of 4 sts plus 2):
Row 1 (wrong side)-With A, purl.
Row 2-With B, k1, sl 1 wyib, *k2, sl 2 wyib;
rep from *, end k2, sl 1, k1.
Row 3-With B, p1, sl 1 wyif, *p2, sl 2 wyif;
rep from *, end p2, sl 1, p1.
Row 4-With A, knit.
Row 5-With C, p2, *sl 2, wyif, p2; rep
from *.
Row 6-With C, k2, *sl 2 wyib, k2; rep
from *.
Repeat rows 1-6 for pattern
Pattern:
Cast on 30 sts. Beginning with row 1, work
in checked pattern until piece measures
desired length. End with row 6.
Using A, bind off. Block.
Single crochet around scarf using color C.
FUNKY FRINGED HEADBAND

Terms: co=cast on, dp=double pointed
needles
Gauge: 8 sts= 6 inches in seed stitch
Size: To fit 22 inches circumference
(adult), 19 inches (teen), 17 inches
(child))
Pattern: CO 29 sts, (25, 23)
Work in seed stitch, beginning with a
knit stitch on each row for 12 rows, (10
rows, 10 rows).
Bind off in pattern unless making full
hat version.
Sew up back seam.
Cut fringes approx 6 inches in length
for adult size and attach to top of headband; you may want to make them
shorter for smaller sizes. Attach fringe
as pictured.
Optional, if top of hat is desired
instead of headband:
*K1, k2tog* repeat from star to star to
end of row
knit one row even
K2tog all the way across row
knit one row even
Cut yarn and weave through all sts. Pull
tightly and weave in.
Sew up seam. Add fringe as for other
hat.
WINTER HEADBAND
A bit sleeker than the Funky Headband,
the Winter Headband looks great with
long or short hair.
Materials:
Bulky yarn
#11 needle
tapestry needle
1 or 2 buttons
Gauge: Approximately 3 sts per inch,
not critical
Terms: c/o-cast on, p=purl, k=knit,
ktbl (knit through back loop),
sts=stitches,
p3tog=purl 3 sts together, tbl=through
back loop, inc=increase
Pattern:
c/o 3 sts
Set up row: k1, p1, k1
Row 2: P, k, p
*Row 3: increase row=Knit one, (p, knit
one through the back loop (k1tbl), p)
all in the next stitch, this is a double
increase into the center stitch, knit one
(5 sts)
Row 4: p, k, p, k, p (rib pattern)
Row 5: k, p, k, p, k
Row 6: increase row=p, k, (p, ktbl, p) all
in the next stitch, k, p (7 sts)
Row 7: k, p, k, p, k, p, k
Row 8: p, k, p, k, p, k, p*
Repeat from row 3 to row 8 doing an
increase row every 3rd row by increasing into the middle stitch to create 2
more
stitches on every increase row while
maintaining rib pattern as set.
When there are 19 sts, stop all increasing and work even in rib pattern for 20
rows.
Decrease to 3 sts as follows:
*Row 1: k1, p1 rib to center 3 sts, p3tog,
p1, k1 rib to end
Row 2: work rib even, (knit the knits
and purl the purls)
Row 3: work rib even*
Repeat rows 1-3 decreasing every 3rd
row by doing a p3tog with the center
3 sts.
Bind off last 3 sts.
Optional: single crochet around with
same or contrast color.
Single crochet around outer edge of
whole headband. Sew on button that
will fit into hole near beginning.
Optional Flower: Cast on 8 sts,
Row 1: knit all sts tbl
Row 2: knit
Row 3: Inc 1 st and knit to the end (9
sts)
Row 4: knit
Row 5: Inc 1 st and knit to the end (10
sts)
Row 6: Knit
Row 7: Knit
Row 8: Knit
Row 9: k2tog, knit to end of row (9 sts)
Row 10: knit
Row 11: k2tog, knit to end (8 sts)
Row 12: Knit
Row 13: Cast off 5 sts and knit last 3 sts
Row 14: k3, cast on 5 sts (8 sts)
Repeat rows 1-14 two more times
Repeat rows 1-12
Bind off all sts, cut yarn and weave
through all pedal cast on sts to form a
circle, pull weaving yarn through the
center of
the flower and use to tack it to the
headband.
Flower Center: Cast on 6 sts
Row 1: Cast off 5 sts and turn
Row 2: Cast on 5 sts and turn. Repeat
rows 1 and 2 seven more times, cast
off all sts, cut yarn and use to weave
through the center of flower to tack
down center of flower to pedals and
headband.
Sew on button into flower center if
desired.
Sew on button near cast on edge, no
buttonhole is necessary if your button
is only about 1 inch in diameter.
