Materials: Approximately 120 yards each of 3 colors of any sport weight yarn (sample: Austermann, Seta) A=brown, B=rust, C=white Gauge: 26 sts=4 inches Needle: size 4 needle Finished size:4 ¾ inches by 45 inches Terms: wyib=hold yarn in back, wyif=hold yarn in front, k=knit, p=purl, sts=stitches Checked Pattern (worked as a multiple of 4 sts plus 2): Row 1 (wrong side)-With A, purl. Row 2-With B, k1, sl 1 wyib, *k2, sl 2 wyib; rep from *, end k2, sl 1, k1. Row 3-With B, p1, sl 1 wyif, *p2, sl 2 wyif; rep from *, end p2, sl 1, p1. Row 4-With A, knit. Materials: Bulky yarn #11 needle tapestry needle 1 or 2 buttons Gauge: Approximately 3 sts per inch, not critical Terms: c/o-cast on, p=purl, k=knit, ktbl (knit through back loop), sts=stitches, p3tog=purl 3 sts together, tbl=through back loop, inc=increase Pattern: c/o 3 sts Set up row: k1, p1, k1 Row 2: P, k, p *Row 3: increase row=Knit one, (p, knit one through the back loop (k1tbl), p) all in the next stitch, this is a double increase into the center stitch, knit one (5 sts) Row 4: p, k, p, k, p (rib pattern) Row 5: k, p, k, p, k Row 6: increase row=p, k, (p, ktbl, p) all in the next stitch, k, p (7 sts) Row 7: k, p, k, p, k, p, k Row 8: p, k, p, k, p, k, p* Repeat from row 3 to row 8 doing an increase row every 3rd row by increasing into the middle stitch to create 2 more stitches on every increase row while maintaining rib pattern as set. When there are 19 sts, stop all increasing and work even in rib pattern for 20 rows. Optional Flower: Cast on 8 sts, Row 1: knit all sts tbl Row 2: knit Row 3: Inc 1 st and knit to the end (9 sts) Row 4: knit Row 5: Inc 1 st and knit to the end (10 sts) Row 6: Knit Row 7: Knit Row 8: Knit Row 9: k2tog, knit to end of row (9 sts) Row 10: knit Row 11: k2tog, knit to end (8 sts) Row 12: Knit Row 13: Cast off 5 sts and knit last 3 sts Row 14: k3, cast on 5 sts (8 sts) Repeat rows 1-14 two more times Repeat rows 1-12 Bind off all sts, cut yarn and weave through all pedal cast on sts to form a circle, pull weaving yarn through the center of the flower and use to tack it to the headband. Flower Center: Cast on 6 sts Row 1: Cast off 5 sts and turn Row 2: Cast on 5 sts and turn. Repeat rows 1 and 2 seven more times, cast off all sts, cut yarn and use to weave through the center of flower to tack down center of flower to pedals and headband. Sew on button into flower center if desired. Sew on button near cast on edge, no buttonhole is necessary if your button is only about 1 inch in diameter.
