Elaine Quehl
My quilts celebrate the visual drama that is present in the natural world. I aim to evoke
the emotion, awe and wonder I experience when I first encounter my subjects. Often
described as bold and sensual, my work employs contrasts of light and shadow to
intensify visual impact. Foliage, trees, flowers, and nature's
cycles serve as metaphors for my inner world and allow
communication and connection with the world through
universally-understood themes of personal growth, wonder,
self-acceptance, loss and healing, joy, and the cycles of life.
Beyond Stippling Part 1
Are you in a stippling rut?
Expand your repertoire of
beautiful free-motion stitches!
This class is designed for
machine quilters who are
familiar with free motion stipple
quilting, but need creative ideas to venture beyond
stippling. You will take home samples of at least 20
free-motion designs that you learn in this course,
including various meanderings, swirls, nested designs,
leaves, flowers, and organic designs. Experiment with
cotton, rayon and metallic threads. The best thing about
this method of free motion quilting is that you don’t need
to mark your quilt top, and so don’t need to worry about
washing your piece after. Materials list.
Fee: $75 (one, 6 hr session)
Date: Saturday, Nov. 9
Time: 10 am – 4 pm
Free-Form Curves/Liberated Appliqué
Part 1. Free-Form Curves: Cut curves free-hand using a
rotary cutter and mat, and see how easy it is to sew them
together for a truly original design. No measuring required.
Looks a lot more complicated than it is! In this half-day class
you will produce a sample (approximately 16” x 20”) that can
be used as a background for an original small quilt.
Part 2. Liberated Applique: This is a convenient technique for
“painting” a picture with fabric.
This method allows you to focus
on creative design without being overly concerned about
perfect technique. You will be cutting the pieces of your
flower and your leaves free-hand with scissors, laying out
the pieces until you are happy with your design, and then
glue-basting them lightly into place. You will then
sandwich the quilt and free-motion stitch your flowers
and leaves into place.
Fee: $75 (one, 6 hr. session) Materials list.
Date: Sunday, Nov. 10
Time: 10 am – 4 pm
Martha Schellingerhoud
Martha is back!! She has been quilting for twenty plus years. Her
quilting passion sprouted from a class she took at her church in 1990.
She has become an amazing machine quilter, from piecing to quilting;
all of which is done on her regular household machine. She designs
her own quilts, the majority inspired by quilts she has seen in
magazines. She is a remarkable teacher, always willing to share her
great techniques.
Quilting in Sections
In this work shop you will be learning the technique of
quilting in sections by trying it yourself. This amazing
technique will allow you to quilt large quilts on a regular
household sewing machine. Three variations will be taught.
Two of these techniques are done so that the finished quilt
has no visible sign of being quilted in sections. Various
quilts that have been quilted with these methods will be
available to see. Other places that these applications could
be used will also be explored. Handouts for further
reference will be available. It is my hope that this workshop
will be both fun and informative for you. Knowledge of
machine quilting is a prerequisite.
Fee: $75 (one, 6 hr. session)
Date: Saturday, Nov. 23
Materials list.
Time: 10 am – 4 pm
Sylvia Naylor
As a textile artist Sylvia likes to explore different ways to express her
vision. Her work usually combines free motion machine embroidery
with dyed and painted fabrics. Sylvia’s realistic pictures using nature
as her muse are framed and sold through galleries. Inspiration for
some of these works comes from her hikes in favourite parks,
Frontenac, Charleston and Algonquin in Ontario and Banff National.
‘IN THE WOODS’
Have fun on this two day workshop using trees in their natural
landscape to create a mini quilt or a piece to frame.
First we will look at a variety of pictures to illustrate design
principles. Then enjoy a liberating way of designing by making a
paper collage.
Non-toxic fabric paints will be used to colour cotton for the
background and for the main tree trunks. Using fused applique
your woodland will grow.
Instruction will be given in using free motion machine embroidery
to create the effect of bark and grasses and leaves. Finally add a
little hand embroidery to complete your masterpiece.
Fee: $120 (two, 6 hr. sessions)
Materials fee: $7.00 to cover cost of paints and cotton payable to the instructor.
Date: Friday, Dec. 6 & Saturday, Dec. 7
