We had great Chili Cook Off and Corn Hole Tournament. Then World Of Wheels where the Chapter collected $4,297.72 . Put that with the money raised from the Chili Cook Off and Corn Hole Tournament that puts the total at $4,607.72 for Children’s. Then we had the Sweet Heart Dinner. The decorations, food and DJ were all Awesome! Great Job All! If you missed the events, you missed some good ones. But there is more to come in the next few months. So, keep a check on the Chapter event calendar for events and rides. Don’t forget to take your bike into Rider’s to have it serviced for the up coming riding season. I know if you’re like me, I’m sick of winter weather and ready to put that kickstand up and ride with my fellow HOGS!! This was my first year working the World of Wheels, and let me say hats off to Warren, Rick and Julie for being there from open to close, and to Brandon for being in the bear suit 2 of the 3 nights I was there, and to all others that volunteered their time to benefit our charity Children’s Hospital. I know we have members that are going to both the Louisiana and Alabama rallies in April, and also we have Road Captains already posting some great rides on our web site, so keep a check on the calendar for a ride coming up. And don’t forget Bama’s Boots, Bands and Bikes and the SOA ride in May.\ Hope to see you on a ride, monthly meeting or Meet and Eat! LET’S RIDE AND HAVE FUN! With Alabama’s BEST HOG CHAPTER BIRMINGHAM HOGS!! Your brother, David (DJ) Pardue P AGE 4 V O L UM E 15 I S S UE 3 SECRETARY’S REPORT By: Julie Gamble, Secretary The meeting was called to order with the playing of the National Anthem. Then David introduced the new members to the HOG Family Mark and Lori Cole/Chuck and Cheryl McLelland. He spoke about a ride that Kevin Back is having to Alexander City on the 21st. Rick asked how everyone was doing and thanked everyone that worked the World of Wheels. With the money raised at WOW, Chili Cook off and the Corn Hole Tournament we have already raised in the Thousands for Children’s Hospital. Also, during the WOW event there were 17 bike raffle tickets sold. See David Lee if you would like to sell some of the tickets for the bike raffle. We had a guest speaker from the Montgomery Chapter (Bill) in attendance to speak about the Alabama State Rally. History on a Harley. In Montgomery there are a lot of historic sites to visit - Wright brother’s first Flight school and the Blue Bell Plant. Make plans to attend this year’s HOG rally in Montgomery. David advised that the Chapter is in good financial shape for this time of the year. Nicole wanted everyone to know that she is working on getting all of the members that have renewed and new members that have joined their cards mailed out. We have 88 members. Remember to update your National HOG membership. Rick said that he was glad to see returning members and new members too. Lisa thanked everyone that helped with and entered the Chili Cook-off and the Corn Hole Tournament. On February 19th we will have the meet and eat at Tortugas on Hwy 280 and then March the 21st there will be a new member/officer ride and a game day at the HOG room. Sally reminded everyone to RSVP for the Sweet Heart Dinner. So far there are 77 guests. Be at the HOG room at 6:00 the 13 th if you would like to help decorate for the Sweet Heart Dinner. Mona Lee spoke about the birthday party she is having for David and his twin sister February 21 st at the HOG room from 7:00 to 10:00. BYOB but there will be a band and food provided. Jeff Alexander wanted everyone to know about the birthday party for Frank on the 28 th at the HOG room 6:00-8:00. Pizza will be provided. Everett said that his Harley is finished. All articles are needed by the 15 th of each month. If you have any photos that you would like to have added to the newsletter email them to Everett. If the pictures are on a hard drive then you can leave the hard drive at Riders and he will go by and pick them up. Melissa advised that there will be a bike night at Riders on March 6th. George wants to know if Riders events can be added to our calendar. Rex will be having a Road Captain meeting February 22nd in the HOG room at 2:00. If you are interested in being a Road Captain and cannot make the meeting email him. George Phillips is having a ride to Milwaukee May 14th. Will be visiting the Harley Davidson Museum and Beaver Dam. Pete Ingram is having a ride to the Dragon Tail April 25th and 26th. Leaving riders at 8:00 and only experienced riders please. Tony asked if anyone had anything to share. Each month Tony will ask if there is a member that would like to share a stupid or wonderful thing that happened while riding. He also wanted everyone to make sure to watch everything around you and to keep an eye on your tire pressure. Rick wanted to remind everyone about the Bama’s Boots, Bands and Bikes May 15 th – 17th. The VIP dinner is Friday night at Iron Horse and it will cost $150.00 per couple. On the 16th at the Pelham Civic Center there will be bands and a kid area then on the 17 th the ride from Pelham back to the HOG room will take place. See web-site for more details. First of all, let me thank everyone who helped decorate, setup, prepare, cook and clean up for this event. The steaks were out of this world and the entertainment met all expectations. Just ask those that were on the dance floor and singing karaoke! Didn’t know we had such talent with a microphone. I took over one hundred pictures that night, and if you had a couple picture taken and would like a copy, just let me know and I will gladly get one to you. It was great getting together with everyone and especially seeing all the new members’ party with us. Just an example of how we get together and have a good time. Also, it was great seeing members that we have not seen in a while. Welcome back!! Speaking for myself, I am so ready to get on my bike. On March 21 st, George Phillips has scheduled a ride to Rattlesnake Saloon, in the Florence, AL area. I am going and invite all LOH to come and new members to spend the day “riding and having fun”! George always has a wonderful ride, and another opportunity to spend with our HOG family. Check the calendar for details. Look forward to seeing you there and if you are a Road Captain, come on and support George on his ride. The more we have, the more organized and safe the ride will be. Let me take this moment to thank those that have made suggestions to me recently on ideas for riding destinations. Let me share them with you. One suggestion was to ride to the Galleria area to have a “movie night”. And the other was to go to the Comedy Club. Meet at Riders Harley Davidson and drive across town for dinner and entertainment. These are great suggestions, and I will definitely organize these events when weather permits. I welcome more ideas and will do my best to “make it happen”. Thanks guys!! Our HOG group has been asked to help in the planning and participation in the Bama’s Boots, Bands & Bikes event benefiting our Military Heroes. From the VIP dinner on May 15 th to the fun filled day of bands and kids activities on Saturday, May 16th to the ride from The Pelham Event Center to Riders Harley Davidson Sunday the 17th. Along with HOG members, the organizers want as many “biker chicks” as possible to ride in the Sunday ride. Let’s have a huge turnout for Sunday, May 17th and show everyone how our LOH can show off our bikes and riding skills. Actors Tommy Flannagan (Chibs) and Mark Boone, Jr. (Bobby) from the show Sons of Anarchy will be the Hero Ambassadors & Special Guests honoring America’s Heroes. They too will lead the ride Sunday from Pelham Event Center to Riders Harley Davidson. We will need as many Road Captains and HOG members to participate in making this event a success. If you are interested, you can contact me and I will make sure the organizers get that information. Also, you can go to www.bamasbootsbandsand bikes.com for more detailed information on the entire weekend’s activities and purpose. I am so excited to be included in such an honorable event and welcome all Birmingham HOG members and LOH to be included. As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, I wanted to have a Pet Fashion Show for our members to coincide with Riders Pet Adoption Day which will be Saturday, June 27th. Again, this is not a competition but a day to honor our “best friend” and give them and us an opportunity to meet and greet each other. I will let you know the details as I learn them myself from the dealership. Mark this date down so you can come spend the day showing off your “best friend”. Ride safe. Your LOH Officer, Sally Peek P AGE 6 V O L UM E 15 I S S UE 3 ACTIVITIES By: Lisa Townsend What a great month February was. The LOH Sweetheart Dinner was awesome and the February meeting was super delicious. I wish I could have tried every single crock pot!! This is really shaping up to be a fantastic year at Birmingham HOG!! The food for this month’s meeting will be salad and deli sandwiches (while they last). We’ll do another potluck later in the year where the chapter provides the meat and everyone will bring a side dish. We’ve got some awesome cooks so I can’t wait! This month we will have a game night on March 21st starting at 6:00pm. We’ll have Texas Holdem and probably some cornhole, darts, and other board games. There will be plenty to do for everyone! Just bring a snack to share. We are in the planning stages of having a mystery dinner theater and I need to know who all would like to play a part. Please email me at [email protected] or inbox me via Facebook if you would like a part in it. I’m thinking this would be something fun to do in April or May so if you have plans during those months let me know and we’ll try to schedule around it. I normally end by saying I’ll see you at the meeting but we will be out of town this month. So ya’ll have fun and I hope to see you all at the Children’s Hospital visit on the 7th. Activities Committee Lisa Townsend Angie Waitzman Janice Isbell Sandy Phillips P AGE 7 V O L UM E 1 5 I S S UE 3 SAFETY By: Tony Berenotto Greetings fellow HOGs!! With snow, freezing rain, and frigid temperatures; I know it doesn't feel it, but Spring is right around the corner. And that means – Riding Season!! Some of us ride all year (with caveats for snow and ice for yours truly), but most wait until the temperatures are more comfortable. We have rides scheduled for March already: Rick's Children's Hospital ride on the 7th, and George's ride to the Rattlesnake Saloon on the 21st. Hopefully we will have a few more added between now and the end of the month. The important thing to remember is that the weather is very unpredictable during the changing of the seasons. Do not put your leathers or your heated gear away yet! Please keep all of your cold-weather riding safety training in mind as the temperatures continue to rise. Conditions can change suddenly during a day or weekend trip. You do not want to be caught without the right gear. I know, I've been there – and I was miserable! At last month's meeting we talked a little about tire safety. I am just going to review some of that material for those that were unable to attend. Please, please, please, do your T-CLOCS inspections before EVERY ride. Start by checking the overall condition of your tires. Look for tread depth and wear, do not let your tires get to a bald condition! Check for weathering and if the tires are evenly seated, make sure that the bead is not loosening. Look at the sidewalls, make sure there are no bulges and if your tires are old or if you have not ridden in a long time, check for cracking. Tires can dry rot over time. While you are checking your tread depth, look for tire damage and/or embedded objects. If you find one, get it evaluated by a professional. Just because the object did not flatten your tire, does not mean it is safe to continue riding. And lastly, but certainly not least, check your tire pressure!!! Check it before every ride or at least weekly, check it more frequently when temperatures are changing. Remember that air pressure decreases with decreasing temperatures. Most folks understand that tires that over inflated or are subjected to excessive temperatures can blow out at the most inopportune times. But, most do not realize that under-inflation causes equally dangerous conditions. Under inflated tires can have significant sidewall damage. The under inflated condition causes the sidewalls to bulge. As you ride the temperature of the tire rises. This repeats as the tire cools and reheats, perhaps over and over. The weakened sidewalls can let go at any time – probably at the worst possible time!! That's it for this month. Please be safe out there; keep the greasy side down and your alertness level up!! V O L UM E 15 I S S UE 3 P AGE 8 LET’S RIDE! By: Rex Parvin Through the cold weather it is good to catch a day or two in Alabama where the weather is just right for a ride. The Road Captains have met to get a game plan for this riding season. Our challenge as a group is we have been wired to plan our activities the night before, so planning a ride a month off seems to be difficult for some of us. We will work on this and try to get more rides posted. Rides Planned Friday Night, 3/6 – Bike Night at Rider’s HD. Hours are 6:00 PM till 10:00 PM. There will be a band, vendors, and food available. Saturday, 3/7 – Ride to Children’s of Alabama. Please try to join us at 11:00 AM at the hospital. The kids are depending on us. Saturday, 3/21 – Ride to the Snake. Leave McDonalds in Gardendale at 8:00 AM for the Rattlesnake Saloon in Tuscumbia for lunch. 145 miles one way. Rain cancels and below 45 degrees. NO OTHER RIDES have been posted. The goal was 1000 miles in less than 24 hours. We left Pelham at 4:00 A.M. and rode to Longview, Texas for lunch at a Subway. I kind of was hoping for a Texas Steak but guess it was a good thing we didn’t eat that much since we were planning to be back in Birmingham before midnight. We actually got back at 11:30 that night. The few of you that were on the ride will remember how much fun we had. The rest of you probably think we were crazy. It was a very enjoyable 1,000 plus miles and 19 ½ hour ride but the best part was the people that were there and friendships and memories that were made. After the ride I wrote an article that some of you may remember. In it was a little story about us stopping at a service station early in the morning, before day break, to ask directions on how to bypass a traffic jam on the interstate because of an accident that had it shut down. After the attendant gave us some directions, which work very well I may add, he noticed the bikes setting out front and asked where we were headed. We told him about out plan to ride 1,000 miles from Birmingham to Longview for lunch and back in less than 24 hours. His last comment as we walked out the door was “Well I guess cowboys still exist”. That comment “Well I guess cowboys still exist” stuck in my mind. I never thought of myself as a cowboy. But then you can’t help but to think about how similar we are to cowboys when we ride. We mount our Harleys and sit in the saddle with pride, just as cowboys would when they mounted their horse. Rather than the sound of the hooves hitting the ground we hear the thump of the big v-twin. The power of both is awesome. We ride for hours with the wind in our face and the smell of the world around us. And finally at the end of the ride when we settle down for chow we talk about old times with old and new friends… we laugh and create memories that only this moment will provide. These will be new memories that we will talk about again at a later time, maybe at the end of the next ride. We enjoy that feeling of freedom when we ride our Harleys across our great country and enjoy all of the beauty that it offers. The smell of the fresh air, the change in temperature when you drop down into a valley or cross a river combined with the unobstructed sights simulating the senses like noting else can, all of this had to be what early cowboys felt when they rode around our awesome nation. The next time you throw your leg over the saddle and head out, remember the cowboys of yesteryear that helped tame this great country of ours. Enjoy our awesome land and all it has to offer and give thanks for what we have. Ride Safe and Have Fun!
