A Message From our President
We are off to a fine year with eight new members and one returning member. Sue
Andrecht is a great recruiter and has brought us Maureen Patterson, Sharon Martel and
Cheri Monger. Teresa Sayler encouraged Sue Westbrook to join, and Gail Hardison
brought in her friend Debbie Hoke. We are also happy to see Marlene Kuncewitch,
Rhonda Hjort and Laurie Rhea. Charlie Link is a returning member. Welcome, ladies!
Thanks to everyone who turned out on Sept. 12th to hand out our Patriotic Quilts to the
men of Charlie Company at the National Guard Armory. There were about 25 of us
attending that morning and it was a wonderful finish for all of our hard work. My heart
nearly burst when these men unfurled their quilts and held them up. It was a beautiful
sight! Pat Glass encouraged the men to ―Do something fun under their quilts‖, (lots of
laughter at this point) and then Pat said ―like, watch a movie‖.
I am continually amazed at the quality and quantity of free patterns available to us online.
I know that all of you do not have computers or internet access, but if you do not, then perhaps you might want to use the computer of a friend or spend a few minutes using a computer at the public library. There is a big wide online world out there and I have been a
frequent flyer lately. I’m feeling ridiculously organized, printing and saving patterns in
binders with categories for purses and bags, quilts and various other quilted items.
Three of my favorite sites for free quilt and block patterns are www.modabakeshop.com ,
(They have quilt ―recipes‖) www.allpeoplequilt.com, and www.jinnybeyer.com The
Jinny Beyer site has a free quilt block pattern posted each Friday, and you can go back and
get the older block patterns as well. You can also find free patterns at the websites for
quilt magazines. McCalls Quilting has tons of block patterns, as does Quiltmaker Magazine.
And while you are at it, check out www.etsy.com, a great place to get ideas for things to
make. Visiting the Etsy site is rather like taking a walk but not knowing where you are
headed, looking at beautiful handmade things along the way. You also might want to
check out quilting blogs, sort of a virtual Show and Share. And most of the major sewing

EVENING CHAIR
SAYS:
Hello Night Owls—
I am sorry to have missed the first
meeting of the New Guild Year.
Thank you Shirley for filling in
for me. I do plan on being there
in October.
As the weather is getting cooler,
it seems more like quilting time to
me. I have several projects
started (don’t we all) and am
planning to actually finish one or
two of them before the end of the
year.
I would like to challenge you to
count your UFOs and report at the
next meeting. We will all feel
much better knowing we are not
the only one with a UFO or two
or three or more.
Don’t forget to wear your name
tag!

BOM-BLOCK OF THE MONTH
Hello fellow quilters,
My name is Teresa Sayler and I have volunteered to make the BOM and supply the pattern to the guild this
year. I have wanted to make a Bear Paw quilt for a long time, but I get bored with the same design block
after block after block. I came across this quilt which has 12 different Bear Paw blocks and it’s easy to adjust to any size block that you wish. The pattern will give you an unfinished 14 1/2 inch square block. Fabric requirements are 2 yard light, 1 1/2 yard dark and 1 yard medium. This can be done with only 3 colors
which is great for those of us who can’t think past 3. You will notice that every component ends up 2 1/2
inches (2 1/2 sq. triangle, squares, etc.). You may make bigger or smaller blocks by increasing or decreasing
the components as long as you are consistent in the change. I think this is an easy quilt to make. Lots of 1/2
square triangles though, so Thangles or something similar may make it easier than marking every square. I
hope you enjoy these blocks.
Please feel free to e-mail me if you have problems or questions at [email protected]. See you at the
meeting. I hope you have fun with this.

TURBIN FOOTSTOOL WORKSHOP
Quilted Turbin Footstool
Friday, October 8
9:00 am to noon at the Roseburg Christina Fellowship Youth Campus on Cedar Street.
We will build a quilted footstool. These are really
neat.
Sheila Snyder Sinclair will be teaching this unique
workshop. Sheila will be giving us some
―homework‖ and then will come back on Friday,
November 5 to help complete the footstool. Same
time and place.
The cost is $20 for guild members and $35 for
non-members. There is an additional $30 fee for
the Kit, it includes plywood base, foam, cording
and drafted pattern. However, it does not include
the feet. The guild will be providing the high loft
batting. Again call, email or see me, Shirley Pyle,
to get signed up for this fun workshop.
A quilt is not a quilt till you
give it away, especially to a
child.
Thank you very much and keep up the good work.
FRONT PAGE PICTURE
This year I am going to try to feature a picture that
one of our members submit’s for the front page of
our newsletter. This means that I need some volunteers to submit a picture for each month. It would
be nice if it fits a certain month, i.e. December
with a quilt that is Holiday colors or with other
Holiday decorations in the picture, January a quilt
with snow in the background or winter themed, a
picture of your pet in the middle of one of your
quilts, etc.
So submit those pictures as soon as possible so that
I will know if I have one to use for the next upcoming edition.

October Poll Question:
What are your favorite quilt related hints and/or tips?
Please submit your response before the 20th of the
month to have it included.
(Okay, this time with it not being the busy summer
months, I expect more than one response. Or I might start
thinking that only one person is reading the newsletter.)

MORE WORKSHOP FUN
March 3 (Thursday)- "The Art of Machine Quilting" taught by Barbara Shapel. This is a beginning machine quilting class. Barbara has so
much information to share that everyone can
learn from attending this class. I took this class
at Sisters in July and recommend it to anyone
who wants to learn to do quilting on their home
machine. The class will be $30 for members,
$35 for members of other quilt guilds and $45 for
non members.
Some of the stitches that will be shown in class
are shown below.
March 4 (Friday) - "Thread Painting: Great Blue
Heron" taught by Barbara Shapel. This class is
for the quilter who wants to take their quilting
skills to the next level. The class will be $30 for
members, $35 for members of other quilt guilds
and $45 for non members. Check out her workshops on her web site: http://
www.barbarayano.com/
The butterfly sampler and the head of the heron are two of the
samples that will be done during the Thread Painting class.
These top instructors are coming to Roseburg
so take advantage of this opportunity to sign
up. Any of these classes would be $70 for the
day if you took them at Sisters. Class size is
limited to 20 students and my goal is to fill the
classes. You have first opportunity to sign up
now but realize I am planning to contact local
shops, local quilt groups and quilt guilds in
Southern Oregon in an effort to have full
classes. By filling these classes, we can afford
to bring in more instructors to grow our skills,
broaden our knowledge and strengthen our
guild.

A QUILTER’S JOURNEY
BY Pam Shoemaker
July 2010
Every quilter is on a journey. It’s filled with endless threads, horizons of inspiring
fabrics, maps with tiny, complicated pieces, color choices at every turn, weary fingers and blurred vision, and
even mechanical breakdowns and technical roadblocks. But once begun, there are few quilters who would
prefer any other journey. We love nearly every minute and if our destination isn’t quite what we expected, all
is not lost. We just box it up and send it off to an even more remote locations and label it ―Donation Quilt‖.
We love being buried in our fabric stash. If we don’t see daylight for a day or two, it’s okay with us. If we
miss a meal, or two, or three, that’s okay, too! What we really enjoy when creating a quilt is for the quilt to
have a pre-determined destination. If we know who it’s for or what it’s for then it becomes a work straight
from the quilter’s heart and she truly stitches love into every little piece. We think about the quilt’s purpose
and try so hard to create something that will put a smile on it’s receiver’s face. It’s the quilter’s prayer that
somebody, somewhere will feel the love and know that they are truly cared for because of the love bound so
tightly in the stitches of the quilt.
And our journey continues. Quilting becomes like breathing and we can’t stop any easier than we could stop
breathing. It’s our life’s sweet oxygen. We’ve all heard that ―love isn’t love until it’s given away‖. A quilter
would say that her quilt isn’t a quilt until it’s given away. So if you are lucky enough to have a quilter in your
life or find that you are the recipient of a hand-created quilt please know that it’s so much more than a blanket. There’s a quilter’s heart and a quilter’s love stitched tightly inside. Now go give your quilt a hug and
you’re sure to feel the love.
QUILT SHOW FUNDRAISER – SHOW D.V.D. SALE
by: Nancy Jarvis
Ever wish, a month after the quilt show, that you could remember a certain design or color of that ―special‖
quilt that impressed you? Ever wish you could have spent more time enjoying the show instead of working
every minute you were there? Ever wish you could share your quilt show with your family and friends that
couldn’t be here? Well! Now you can. It’s a fundraiser for the guild also.
As Quilt Show Chair, I am exploring a fundraising project that would do two things. (1) Produce a professional DVD of all the entries at our 2011 show. It would contain the photo and the name of the person entering it as well as the entry (quilt) name. (2) Raise funds for the guild at no cost to us.
Important: Our new entry form will give the entrant the opportunity to release or deny authority to photograph the quilt/item for the DVD. Your wish will be honored if you choose to decline.
All DVD’s ordered by the guild before the show will be $10.00 which will increase to $12.00 at the show.
The number of DVD’s sold will determine our profit from the sales. 1-199 the guild will recover 25% of the
sale price. 200 + the guild will recover 40% of the sale price.
At the September 7th meeting, I was able to display via my laptop just what the DVD would look like. There
was a consensus that we should continue to explore it. I will have the laptop at the October meetings again if
you would like to check it out in more detail. Many of the guilds in California have utilized the services of
Visual Concepts and have been very satisfied with the product. Look for more information in the future.

A DAY TO HONOR OUR TROOPS
On Sunday, September 12, 2010 many of our members
gathered at the Roseburg Armory to pay tribute to our
National Guards. The Patriotic Quilts were handed out
to the troops. What an awesome experience it was!
There were approximately 87 of the local Guards at the Amory to receive their quilt. (There were some others
that were not present.) There were also about 40 National Guards that were from other units, Medford and
Eugene, that had joined our own Charlie Company when they deployed to the war zone that were also not present on Sunday. However, even if they were not present on Sunday, there is a quilt ready for each of them.
The two year project of making these quilts was well worth the effort when you saw the expressions and heard
the many comments of the men that received them.
We had made and given out quilts on two previous occasions, however for those times we did not need the
vast numbers at one time.
For some of the troops this was a second Patriotic quilt. They were just as thankful for the quilt this second
time as they were the first time that they received one.
Two years ago, Pat Glass volunteered to chair the Patriotic Quilt Committee. Then just a short time later,
she found out that we would be needing to make about 150 quilts for our Roseburg-based Charlie Company
from the 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment as they were being deployed to the war zone.
However, Pat proved that she is a true leader when she ―stepped up‖ and made it happen. Even when Pat
had a major medical problem with her eyes, leaving her so that she could not see more than a short distance in
front of her, she could not sew, and she could not drive, did she let it hinder her. She carried on. Doris K.
stepped forward and volunteered to assist Pat during this time.
There were also a lot of people from the community and different organizations that volunteered with their
time to cut and sew the fabric into tops, to assemble the quilts, do the quilting of the quilts and then sew on the
binding. We also had monetary donations from the Southern Oregon War Birds and the American Women
Veterans Association. Without the Country Lady Quilt Shop, we would have had a much more difficult time
meeting our goal. Charlie W. was so gracious in that she allowed her staff and volunteers to use the long-arm
quilters and a lot of her thread, etc. to machine quilt many of these quilts for us. Of course, there was also the
many members of our own Guild that contributed. Members made blocks, donated fabric, made tops and also
would complete one or more quilts totally completed. Without everyone working together, this project would
not have been the huge success that it was.
Most importantly, we want all of our Military personnel to know that we support them. We appreciate our
freedoms. If not for the those men and women stepping forward and serving America by being in the Armed
Forces we would not have the freedoms that we so many times take for granted.
This is our small way of saying THANK YOU.
