Turkey Costume Instructions

Turkey Costume Instructions
We hope you have a great time creating your turkey costumes for the Gobble Gobble Turkey Wobble. To be counted
toward the world record attempt, costumes must include the following elements: brown shirts and pants (if you have
them), some kind of plumage, webbed feet and a beak. Following are some crafty suggestions from our team—the
materials listed cost us less than $10. So, get creative and have some fun!
You will need:
 Brown shirt or jacket and brown pants
 3 sheets (9” x 12”) of yellow or orange felt (the stiffer felt would be helpful but isn’t necessary)
 1 sheet (9” x 12”) of red felt (optional)
 4 sheets of foam (12” x 18”) (2 red, 1 brown, 1 yellow or any combination of those colors) OR cardboard and
spray paint/construction paper
 1 package of elastic cord
 Hot glue (optional)
Feet
1. Use the template on page 2 of this document to cut each of 2 sheets of the yellow or orange felt
2. Punch a hole in the bottom left and bottom right corner (can use a hole punch or just cut a hole) as shown in the
Foot template
3. Place each piece of felt over your ankles and shoes and wrap the bottom corners around your ankle so the two
holes are near each other behind your ankle
4. Secure by running a 15” - 20” long section of elastic cord through both holes and around the front of your ankle,
tying a bow in front, and folding the excess felt above the bow over the bow
Beak
1. Cut the two shapes from the Beak template on page 3 of this document out of the yellow or orange felt (if you
bought the flimsier felt, cut a second set of those two shapes out of paper and glue to the corresponding felt
shapes)
2. Make a crease by folding each piece in half as indicated on the template – then unfold slightly
3. Place the top of the beak on top of the bottom of the beak, which should form a diamond shaped cavity
between the two and glue the two pieces together, along the two 5” sides, as indicated in the template (leave
the tip of the beak unglued so that air can enter the beak)
4. You can make an optional turkey wattle by cutting a pear shape out of the red sheet of felt and gluing it to the
bottom of the beak, so that the wattle covers your chin when the beak is worn
5. Glue the last inch of both ends of a 12” - 16” piece of elastic cord to the inside of the beak, along the line where
the top and bottom of the beak meet (the length of the cord depends on the fit around your neck)
6. Draw two nostrils on the top of the beak as indicated in the template
7. Pull the beak on over your head and below your ears, with the beak over your nose and mouth, and if necessary,
tighten the strap by tying a knot in the back of the strap, behind your neck so that the beak doesn’t fall down
Plumage
1. Cut two feathers out of each of the four foam pieces – make the feathers as big as you can so about 6” x 18”
since that is half of the foam piece
2. Alternate the colors and fan the feathers so they make a half circle shape
3. Glue the feathers together (to secure them further you can also punch a hole at the bottom of each feather and
put a small piece of electrical cord through all the holds and tie it off)
4. Glue a piece of cardboard, maybe 4” x 8”, horizontally, to the side of the plumage that will be touching your
back, about half way up, and glue the ends of a piece of elastic cord (enough to comfortably wrap around your
waste) to the cardboard piece
5. Glue another piece of cardboard, maybe 4” x 15” vertically to the plumage, in the middle, again on the side that
will be touching your back (this will ensure the plumage doesn’t fall down or fold
6. (You could also make plumage out of all cardboard, coloring it with construction paper or spray paint)
