Picture by Steve Harlow. By STEVE HARLOW Swimming correspondent WEEK one of the Warwickshire Championships saw three Boldmere swimmers crowned as county champion and two as junior champion. In total Boldmere notched up 42 championship, age group and relay medals – 16 gold, 18 silver and eight bronze – plus 27 finalists and their swimmers set 101 long course PBs with two new long course relay club records. Luke Davies retained his 100m breaststroke county title, winning the final in a time of 1.05.99mins, ahead of Jake Dixon who took silver. In the age group finals, Oliver Carless claimed gold in the 10/11 age group with Ellis Taylor second while William Cooper also won silver in the 12-year age group. The second county title went to Ben Stanford in the 50m freestyle. Being a 16-year-old he also won the junior county title. Four Boldmere lads made the final with Stanford top of the tree in a time of 25.25secs ahead of Steve Wilson who took silver. Joey Stanger was sixth and Ben Campbell seventh. Leo Karski won silver in the 13/14 age group in a time of 28.54secs and went on to claim gold in the 1,500m freestyle. In the 1,500m freestyle, 18year-old S10 Para swimmer Tully Kearney set a new club record with her 18.45.92mins time on the way to winning the county title while her 800m split time of 9.44.75mins was an unofficial British record. Ellen Ratcliffe finished second for the silver medal, as did Joey Stanger in the open boys’ race. In the boys’ 100m fly finals, five more medals were won – Oliver Carless (10/11) bronze, Wilson in seventh. Nadya Sterling (10/11) stormed to gold as did Wood in the 13-yr final with Bartley in sixth place. Gerda Vasiliauskaite (12) and Anya Mee (14) were sixth and eighth in their respective finals. Erin Davies, 12, showed her class in the 200m breaststroke, winning the 10/12 age group by 14 seconds in a PB of 2.56.83mins, ranking her fourth fastest in the UK. Vasiliauskaite was second for the silver medal while Wood won her second gold of the day in the 13/14 age group in a PB of 2.51.74mins. Davies swooped yet another gold in the 10/12yr 200m freestyle with a four-second PB time of 2.24.55, while Bartley claimed bronze in the 13/14 age group. In the backstroke events, Karski touched first for gold in the 13/14 200m distance while Woolley picked up his second silver of the day in the 10/12 age group. In the girls’ 10/12yr 50m sprint event, Vasiliauskaite set a PB of 36.66secs to take silver and Eden-Joy Light qualified for the 15+ final, finishing fifth. In the relays, the 10/12yr girls’ 4x50m freestyle quartet of Abbey Turnbull, Vasiliauskaite, Davies and Sterling stormed to gold. A second relay gold came via the boys’ 13/15yr 4x50m medley team of Karski, Tom Bloor, Matt Price and Archie Langston, who won by 11 seconds. In the girls’ 13/15yr 4x50m medley relay, Anya Mee, Georgina Dolan, Light and Kate Davies seemed destined for bronze until the latter’s fantastic anchor leg split of 28.61secs earned them silver by just 0.06 of a second. In the 4x200m freestyle, the boys’ open age group foursome of Steve Wilson, Jake Dixon, Luke Davies and Joey Stanger were edged into silver position. Finally, there was another silver medal for the girls’ open 4x100m medley team of Wood, Emily Gordon, Rachel Wilson and Alex Dolan. FOOTBALL ROUND-UP Mikes get back on track Midland Premier LONG EATON UNITED 0 BOLDMERE ST MICHAELS 0 A MUCH-CHANGED Mikes side battled to a hard earned goalless draw at Long Eaton United on Wednesday. With both sides having struggled for results recently – Long Eaton’s title challenge fading after a winless run of six games – the stalemate was as entertaining as could be considering neither side scored. Jason Holmes was among those close to breaking the deadlock Acer Woolley (11) silver, James Goodwin (13) bronze and finally Jake Dixon and Luke Davies (15+) Championship silver and bronze medals. Stanford was seventh and with the fastest 16/u time of the day, he won his second junior county title. The girls’ 400m IM event saw a Boldmere one-two for Lily Wood and Alex Bartley, taking gold and silver respectively, in the 12/13 age group while Kate Davies won Championship bronze for the third fastest time overall. Kear ney’s sixth place time of 5.25.88mins would have been a S10 British record as well as a European and World record time – but as the championships were not an IPC registered event they unfortunately will not be eligible for ratification. There was another Championship medal in the 15+ girls’ 100m fly final with Rachel Wilson setting a new PB in a time of 1.05.46 to take silver ahead of Morgan Harlow in sixth and Lauren third in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. And he topped those excellent efforts with second places in the 200m individual medley and 50m butterfly. Lewis Carless also secured a commendable third place in the 10-year age group in the BAGCAT points. Junior swimmers did an excellent job in the new age group relays for 10-12-yearolds. Ella Payne, Eleanor Elwell, Becky Gulliver, Trearna Hart and Catrise Hart all swam well in the freestyle and medley relays and enjoyed the experience. The boys – Dylan Langston, Harvey Higgins, Lewis Carless and Ellison Hart – also swam well against older swimmers and will be back again to fight for a higher place next year. Other swimmers at the Warwickshire Championships were Andrew Gulliver, Jamie Keyte, Jessica Deans. Mikes keeper Adam Jenkins made the save of the first half from Nightingale while after the break it was the visitors who threatened more. Ben Wilkinson had Boldmere’s best chance, having been freed by two dummies in the box, but he hit his shot directly at keeper Low when he should have scored. Roland Agbor, Charisma Agbonlahor and Jason Holmes also all had good half-chances without finding the elusive finish. ■ Boldmere visit Coventry Sphinx tomorrow (Saturday). picked up both a silver and a bronze. Brothers Tyler and Alfie Smith won silver and bronze medals respectively. Instructor Jason Smith, 5th Dan, who won two bronzes himself, said: “The commitment by my students not only on the day of the competition but in the months of training leading up to it has been fantastic.” BOLDMERE ST MICHAELS 2 CAUSEWAY UNITED 1 TWO headed goals, one in each half, helped Boldmere record their first victory in ten games last Friday night. They were rewarded for a bright start on 21 minutes as Steve Palmer headed home Ben Wilkinson’s free-kick at the far post – his second goal in three games – to put the Mikes ahead. United replied well and former Boldmere man Joel Ayettey came closest to equalising when his lob over advancing keeper Lewis Gwilliams bounced higher than expected off the firm ground and just cleared the bar. After the interval, Causeway came more into the game and levelled in the 58th minute as Gwilliams saved Jack Pearlman’s freekick but the United man tucked home at the second attempt. It did not take the Mikes long to regain the lead as centre-back Ben Birch headed home a Heath freekick but it needed a great save from Gwilliams to preserve the advantage. Jason Holmes spurned a great chance to settle Boldmere’s nerves when he blasted over the bar from close range but the Mikes hung on to end a run of 50 days without a victory. Paget created chances after the break as Fagg shot just over and Morris forced Sawyer into a fine save. Howard went closest to breaking the deadlock when his shot on the turn hit the Chelmsley crossbar. However, it was the visitors who scored the only goal on 75 minutes as Maguire saved from Lloyd but the ball fell to Ellis who fired low into the Paget net. Rangers pushed for an equaliser but Morris’s effort from distance flew wide and Sawyer made a good save from Morris’s free-kick. FECKENHAM 3 SUTTON UNITED 3 UNITED dropped two points in the race for promotion but were glad to rescue a draw from 3-1 down at halftime to lowly Feckenham. Sutton took the lead on 12 minutes as Chad Duggan headed home a Jared McGivern cross but three goals in 16 minutes put Feckenham firmly in control. United were excellent after the break with the introduction of Ryan Simmonds from the bench key as he scored from 25 yards and set up Lewis for the equaliser. They pushed for the winner without success but face Feckenham again at Hollyfield Road tomorrow (Saturday) in the second part of a quick-fire double-header. ■ Sutton United B team secured a 1-0 win at home against Old Wulfrunians C in the Birmingham AFA.
