2 April 2015 UPCOMING EVENTS No Bottles this week due to Easter ABS Boot Camp – gold coin donation to the club, open to members – Saturday 11.30am - meet in main hall Club Champo’s 4 April 2015 – 8am Bar Hop – 10 May 2015 North Bondi’s hat-trick of Stan Mac relay success A dramatic error of judgement when in a winning position last Sunday cost Bondi the chance of claiming its first Stan Mac relay victory over North Bondi in three years. Bondi held a 53-second lead at the start of the 17th leg of the 20-person relay race before one of its most experienced lifesavers failed to swim past the last of eight buoys at the halfway point. The Bondi swimmer was alerted of the mistake when a third of the way back to the beach and was forced to swim back around the buoy he had missed. Norths’ winning margin after the relay was completed was two minutes and eight seconds, giving the club its 40th victory in the 73rd annual running of the event, officially the Stan and Basil McDonald Memorial Relay that was first held in the 1942-43 season. The race provided immense excitement for the big crowd of supporters of both camps, with a see-sawing contest before tragedy struck the host club. Norths took honours on the first leg before Bondi went to the lead on the next two stages. Norths regained the advantage from the fourth to 11th legs before Bondi grabbed the lead with its 12th swimmer and Norths was first home after the next leg. Bondi surged to the front again for three consecutive legs with its 14th to 16th swimmers before disaster struck. Norths’ winning team, in swim-off order, was Sam Annear, Greg Bishop, Scott Thomson, Andre Dutton, Gus Bennett, Hamish Donkin, Brett Johnson, Lizzie Welborn, Ally Christopher, Craig Hammond, Campbell Bennett, Ben Walker, Simon Storry, India Fay, John Clothier, Kate Solomonson, Talbot Henry, Joseph Walsh, Matt Hamilton and Josh Stevens. Bondi was represented by Grant Baldock, Lochie Hinds, Chris Wright, David Williams, Blake Francis, Samantha Watts, Dori Miller, Adam Nezval, Xavier Clarke, Ryan Huckle, Michael Pollard, Cormac Guthrie, Toby Jenkins, Greg Shein, Andrea Miller, Brad Horrie, Simon Watkins, Tom Miller, Tom Page | 1 Montgomery and Simon Nothling. — JOHN BLANCH To the twenty valiant swimmers who represented our club with great passion and commitment last Sunday, we thank you. To the many supporters who cheered the club, we thank you also. The 2015 Stan and Basil McDonald relay was one for the ages; the unbelievable crowd, the weather, and of course the most cruel twist of fate. Our rookie swimmers were outstanding and now understand what all the talk has been about. All agreed it was an honour and an amazing experience to be part of. To the loyal team of Mac relay regulars, you always put your hand up. Congratulations to North Bondi whom in their own admission achieved a hollow victory. The future for swimmers at Bondi is bright. Stage one of our youth development initiative is near complete. Going forward there are exciting things happening. The Legends Lunch in November will be the launch pad for some exciting new surf sports initiatives. Nick Nezval Stan and Basil McDonald Relay Captain STAN MAC RELAY 2015 No. North Bondi 1. The sun was out, with an interesting sea. We changed the swim around to take advantage of a rip to get out & then a swim across the bank. Patrol Captain Pep had everything under control, with his IRB team working well under good conditions. A Grade saw the Shaggy Dog come back from the wilderness, injuries & all; catching a great wave & strolling up the beach with a grin from ear to ear, until told his handicap was going up two minutes to reflect his prowess, under trying conditions. Popular Life member Cyril, down to chair a Judiciary Committee, made sure he got a swim in & did well, beating out Pep. It’s good to see our President Jacob swimming regularly & enjoying himself, with his constituency. B Grade did it hard & most had to swim, with Kirby coming in & winning definitely the hard way. Maggi festinated through the water, showing that age can in fact be left behind. Patti got another minor place & is really enjoying her swimming. C Grade again saw only Anthony in attendance. With Nippers finished there is no excuse for more to not come down. This coming Sunday, we will be used by many as a warm-up for the Stan Mac. So come down & meet our stars & then hang around & see them perform from 2 pm. Patrol Captain Steve Hackers had the buoys out early & due to a small fish causing a little concern, we brought them in a little bit & spread them out, to create a good distance. Danielle & Mark were in the ducky & gave great service & water safety. A Grade saw Steve catch a wave & come through a tight field to edge out Jann & Lea. Dori seemed to cramp & was unable to get out of the water or she would have placed. Old age or just good tactics? B Grade saw a dead heat with Oscar & Vera, coming up the beach together. Oscar was not that far behind, with Dad Rob tying with the third Cadet in the race Anthony for fourth. C Grade was not raced separately; however, with a couple more starters we will be able to run it again separately. Next week we have the start of our last month of races. So get down & enjoy the fun & games before it is all over for another season. Raewyn will not be with us next week, as she is visiting NZ to commiserate with family on what a great cricket team we have, so look for me & the books.
