“The Nurtured Heart”
Monday, April 13, 2015 7:00—8:30 p.m.
Presenter: Marc Markell, PhD at St. Cloud State University
The Nurtured Heart Approach is to help build inner wealth in children by giving them
abundant evidence that they are valuable, good, competent and able to deal with and
succeed in life. The Nurtured Heart Approach is about adults collapsing negative energy and giving children the positive energy they need. The approach is about creating
experiences for children that bring out their positive selves.
Professor Marc Markell, professor in special education, along with his sister and co-author Kathryn Markell,
had their book about working with young people dealing with grief published by Routledge. "The Children
Who Lived: Using Harry Potter and Other Fictional Characters to Help Grieving Children and Adolescents"
uses the experiences of Harry Potter and other fictional characters to help educators, counselors and parents
work with children and adolescents dealing with loss. Markell, who joined St. Cloud State in 1991, earlier
authored "Helping People with Developmental Disabilities Mourn: Practical Rituals for Caregivers," as well
as articles in the field of special education. Copies are available at Amazon.com, Borders and Barnes & Noble.
