PRESS REPORT BRITISH ISLES SENIOR INTERNATIONAL SERIES – COUNTY PLAYERS INVOLVED Stanley IBC, County Durham, is the setting for the forthcoming British Isles International Series for the home countries of Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and of course England, and it is to be played from Thursday, 12th to Saturday, 14th March, 2015, with two 6 rink matches on each of the three days. Two of the County’s players will be there, Jamie Walker, Wellingborough IBC & Neil McKee, Kingsthorpe IBC, both having retained their places in the England team, and, hopefully, they will both have got very used to the green as they are playing in the British Isles Championships which precedes this Series, with Jamie in the Men’s Singles and Neil in the Men’s Pairs.. Jamie is playing at No. 3 on the rink skipped by Sam Tolchard of Torquay United IBC, Devon, and they will be joined at Lead by Brett Arkley of Stanley IBC, who is earning his recall to the national team, and at No. 2 by regular International David Bolt, also of Stanley IBC. Neil will be playing at No. 2 in the rink skipped by a recalled International Graham Shadwell of Clarrie Dunbar IBC, Frome, Somerset, and they will be joined by Steven Mitchinson of Tye Green IBC, Harlow, Essex, at Lead retaining his place after making his debut last year, and at No. 3 by Stephen Farish of Cumbria IBC, almost a ‘fixture’ in the England team for the last14 years. Coincidentally Neil, in playing with Graham, will be meeting up with the player who, in 1993 at Worthing, beat him in the now discontinued Under 18 National Singles 21-20 shots when Neil was just 15 years of age. First up for England will be Ireland at 4.0 p.m. on Thursday, 12 th March, 2015, when Neil’s rink will play the rink skipped by Ian McLure, Ireland’s Team Captain, and Jamie’s rink will play the rink skipped by Stephen Coleman. Friday, 13th will see England face Wales at 10.0 a.m. when Neil’s rink will play that skipped by Daniel Salmon with Jamie’s rink playing the rink of Wales Captain David Kindon. The third and final match in the Series will see England playing Scotland on Saturday, 14 th March, at 3.0 p.m. with the County players facing two of the best known bowlers on the world stage, Neil against Darren Burnett’s rink and Jamie against Paul Foster’s rink. We wish them the best of bowling in their endeavours for their country. -22. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEN ‘LIBERTY TROPHY’ SEMI-FINAL – RESULT WELL DONE TO NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEN – INTO THE FINAL OF THE ‘LIBERTY TROPHY’ FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE COUNTY’S HISTORY FOLLOWING A TERRIFIC WIN IN THE SEMI-FINAL AGAINST DORSET. The men of Northamptonshire Indoor Bowling Association took a trip to Newbury, Berkshire, on Saturday, 7 th March, 2015, to play Dorset in this most prestigious of all Inter County competitions, the ‘Liberty Cup’ Due to the distance involved between the two counties, the venue was the neutral green of West Berks IBC, for a 10.30 a.m. start. Following the close match in the Quarter Finals against Dorset’s neighbours Hampshire, it was expected that a tough match would face them. A top quality match was in prospect for both Counties have a clutch of present or former International players in their teams, and this is what the many supporters from both Counties enjoyed. The first end went very much the way of Dorset as they immediately posted a 4 shots lead at 9-5 across the green but that deficit was soon remedied by the County on the next end which went 8-2 shots in its favour to take a lead which was never seriously challenged for the remainder of the match, and which, at the half-way stage, was a very encouraging 41 shots at 82-41 after 11 ends of play. With the quality of players at Dorset’s disposal that sort of lead was never likely to be sustained, and so it proved as Dorset had an equal share of the scoring over the next 4 ends and kept the County’s lead to 39 shots after 15 ends of play across the green. The 16th end was not a good one for the County, and as the Dorset men picked up a total of 18 shots without reply on that one end, the County supporters became just a little anxious for the lead was cut to just 21 shots. They need not have worried over much, however, for the last ends of play were pretty even, and when 5 of the rinks had finished, the 2ends left to be played by Paul Broderick’s rink were not necessary as the win had been secured by 20 shots. The highest scoring rinks for the County were those skipped by Neil Corbyn and Jamie Walker, each having an advantage of 8 shots, and the final score was Northamptonshire 127 shots – Dorset 107 shots. Rink details, Dorset skips only, as follows: Rink 1. Rink 2. Rink 3. Rink 4. Rink 5. ends played) Rink 6. As a result of this terrific win, the County will now play Lincolnshire in the Final at Melton & District IBC, at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, 12th April, 2015. 4. NATIONAL ‘TOP CLUB’ QUARTER FINALS – RESULT Following on from the County’s victory in the Liberty Cup – things got even better when Wellingborough qualified for the National Finals of the Inter Club ‘Top Club’ competition, for the second successive year. After the terrific win against City of Ely IBC in the previous round, Wellingborough IBC was confidently looking to at least match last year’s success by getting to the National Semi-Finals in this competition, as they entertained at Wellingborough on Sunday, 8th March, 2015, the Mid Suffolk IBC from Stowmarket. The visitors had one of the best known names in British bowls, Mark Royal in the team, and he was the skip of the Triples. Despite this however, Wellingborough totally dominated the contest and took maximum points. Details of the disciplines as follows: Chloe Wordingham was very much in form as she took on the Ladies 2 Wood Singles, and she had posted 10 shots on the scoreboard in 7 ends without reply and another 7 ends later she had reached the unbeatable position at 16-2 shots up. Her opponent did play some better ends from then on to pick up 6 shots to 3 to Chloe, but the 2 points went to Wellingborough with Chloe’s win 19-8. Dave Love followed Chloe onto the rink for his Men’s 2 Wood Singles match and although the contest was very even for the first 8 ends with the scores 4 shots all at that stage, David then eased ahead with some excellent draw bowling to be 7 shots ahead after 13 ends at 11-4, and from then on he kept the gap to win comfortably, with 2 more points to Wellingborough. At this stage the Pairs, Triples and Fours were well up, and Wellingborough was sitting comfortably for the win. Tina Broderick had been giving Jamie a great start end after end in the Mixed Pairs and with him also peppering the jack they totally dominated their match, as their opponents were not able to get on the scorecard for 9 ends, at which point they were 22 shots down. The 10th end provided a cheer for the Suffolk supporters as their pairing finally scored a shot, but with Tina and Jamie in great form they were to pick up just 2 more shots as Wellingborough won 27-3 shots, with 14 ends only played, as Mid Suffolk conceded defeat. 4 more points to Wellingborough. The Mixed Triples saw the first end go to Mark Royal, but thereafter Wellingborough was always in front, and each of the home players played some excellent bowls, none more than Darren Lyman against his illustrious opponent. After 6 ends of play Wellingborough was 6 shots up at 8-2, and 2 ends later the gap had grown to 9 shots when a pick-up of 4 shots went the way of Darren’s triple. Four ends later with the gap still 8 shots, Mid Suffolk conceded defeat after 12 ends of play with the score 15-3 to the home triple. 4 more points to Wellingborough. The Mixed Fours was also very much going in Wellingborough’s favour, as Jean Burgess and Chris Cooper gave the rink a very good start end after end, and with some excellent bowls being delivered by both Neil & Paul, their opponents were really under the hammer throughout, apart from the 1 st end in which they picked up 1 shot. They were not to score again for the next 8 ends as the shots against them mounted to 23 shots by virtue of a massive count of 6 shots on the 4th end and a 4 on the 10th end. 3 ends later and Mid Suffolk conceded. Overall Final score was Wellingborough 102 shots (16 points) – Mid Suffolk 33 shots (0 points) Ladies Singles: Chloe Wordingham beat L Finbow 19-8 shots Men’s Singles: Dave Love beat C Kemp 17-8 shots Pairs: Tina Broderick & Jamie Walker beat C Howe & M Rumball 27-3 shots Triples Alison Dring, Mick Cooper & Darren Lyman beat L Botten, C Wright & M Royal 15-7 shots Fours: Jean Burgess, Chris Cooper, Neil Corbyn & Paul Broderick beat E Aldred, J Howe, J Finbow & S Gaunt 24-7 shots Wellingborough now plays at Bristol City & County IBC on Saturday, 25th April, 2015, with the Semi-Final, against either Spalding IBC or Nottingham IBC, in the morning, followed, hopefully, by the Final in the afternoon. -45. CHARITY ‘BOWLATHON’ AT DESBOROUGH IBC The Charity bowls 24 hour marathon was held at Desborough IBC on Saturday, 7th March, 2015, commencing at 12 noon, and concluding at 12 noon on Sunday, 8th. This was the third such ‘Bowlathon’ organised by Graham Carley, of Desborough IBC, in which the previous events have raised hundreds of pounds for very good causes. The beneficiary this year will be the same as last year, the ‘Teddy Bear Foundation’ Graham Carley, is very hopeful of raising around £3000 for this charity, and he was very grateful for all the people who helped organise the day, and the many people that volunteered to play during the 24 hours, plus other helpers, the donation of raffle prizes, and his Club for allowing him to stage the event. He became involved with this style of bowls marathon charity fund raising following he and his partner losing their first child at age 2 weeks. About The Teddy Bear Foundation Since its inception in 2005, the Teddy Bear Foundation has quickly become one of Scotland’s most successful registered charities. It acts as a kind of ‘fairy godfather’ to schools and organisations which work with children with special needs. If there is a funding gap for, say, bicycles or an adventure weekend away in the countryside, the Teddy Bear Foundation steps in to provide the cash. So far, it has spent close to £500,000 providing trips to Euro Disney, riding lessons, massage sessions and turning barren school land into sensory gardens. The Teddy Bear Foundation has even funded advanced testing techniques on children who cannot been easily diagnosed within the NHS. The charity was founded by Glasgow businessman Barry Chuwen and his wife, Jenny, after the couple experienced a tragedy of their own. Jenny had a baby stillborn at six months, a victim of the rare condition known as Edward’s Syndrome. They named the little lad ‘Ted’ and, in memory of their late son, provided toys to the nearest special needs school to their home. That provided Barry with the idea of helping other disadvantaged children across Scotland, using his baby son’s name in the new charity he established. Golf events at Turnberry raised upwards of £70,000 in successive years. 6. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEN ‘MCIBA’ WARWICKSHIRE CUP versus WARWICKSHIRE Could things get even better for the County’s Bowls this weekend? They certainly could for the holder of this year’s ‘Warwickshire Trophy’ was decided on Sunday, 8 th March, 2015. You have guessed it – NORTHAMPTONSHIRE HAS WON THE TROPHY. The men of Northamptonshire Indoor Bowling Association visited Welford-on-Avon IBC on Sunday, 8th March, 2015, for the deciding match in the Midland Counties ‘Warwickshire Trophy’ against the County which provides the name, Warwickshire IBA. The County and Warwickshire were the leading Counties in the League, with the winner to take the trophy in this last match of the series, and on the day Northamptonshire took the honours with a very good win by 12 shots. NATIONAL BOWLS NEWS BOWLS ENGLAND NEWS Bowls England Chief Executive takes up the Bowls Coaching Challenge Bowls England Chief Executive and 15 time World Champion, Tony Allcock MBE, was awarded his Coach Bowls Level 1 qualification at Donyngs IBC in Surrey this weekend. Coach Bowls is the only coaching qualification for flat green bowls recognised by Bowls England and the English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd. Tony, who was also England’s Lawn Bowls Performance Director at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, will now move on to the Level 2 award in acknowledgment of the value of coaching to the future of the sport. Tony said: “Quality coaching is vital to the long-term development of the sport of bowls, and therefore as an organisation we are fully committed to Coach Bowls. I recently attended an Activator course as an observer in addition to undertaking the Level 1 qualification, and I was impressed with the professional manner in which both events were organised and the level of detail contained within. These courses will undoubtedly lay the foundation for the future of bowls in England and I am very happy to recommend them to our members. I personally am delighted to have received the Level 1 award and am now looking forward to the Level 2 course so that I continue to develop my coaching skills.” Bowls England and the English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd provide bursaries to assist members with the qualification fees, whilst funding may also be available from County Sport Partnerships. Tony added: “The financial support available through our bursary scheme and that of the indoor association, together with other bodies, means that cost should not be a barrier to the vast majority of those who may wish to attend a Coach Bowls course.” Individual membership of the Coach Bowls Scheme costs just £8 and as well as providing insurance cover, members receive regular updates on developments in coaching and if they so wish, may offer their services to clubs both inside and outside of their county boundaries.
