Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a yearly partnership between the Howard County Public Library and Howard County Public
Schools. Teams of 5 fifth graders and one adult coach read 16 pre-determined books this year and competed in the Battle
of the Books this past Friday at Howard High School. Each of our teams represented our school well. The Literature
Detectives won third place overall. Way to go Bushy Park Bears! We are very proud of you! A huge thank you goes out
to the Battle of the Books coaches and Mrs. Richmond for helping to make this a memorable and successful event for our

Screen Free Week Challenge
The Maryland General Assembly, Delegate Bob Flanagan, Delegate Trent Kittleman, Delegate Warren Miller and Senator
Gail H. Bates are inviting the students of Howard County elementary schools in District 9 to, once again, participate in the
“Screen-Free Week Challenge.” Younger siblings are also encouraged to participate.
We hope that interested students will accept this challenge by giving up television (and other electronic devices with
screens, unless it is school-related) for seven consecutive days and engaging themselves in more productive, creative and
educational ways to spend their time. We cannot think of a better time to do this than in conjunction with National
Screen-Free Week 2015 from May 4th thru 10th.
Students who successfully complete the “challenge” will receive a personalized certificate. The Screen-Free Week
Challenge Form is on page 4 of this newsletter. Please return the completed forms to Senator Bates’ office by Friday,
May 29th. The address is listed at the bottom of the form.
