A Day of Zips

This is the one! Anyone who has ever struggled with the
dreaded zip needs to come on this one-day workshop! In
the morning we will put in a standard zip, showing you the
easy way to get a really nice even finish (we cheat!!) We will
then go on to the lapped zip, a really nice zip to use as a
side fastening or a feature piece. Then we’ll place an open
ended zip and to finish off the day
we'll concentrate on a concealed
zip which can be a little tricky but
trust us - once you've learnt how to
do it you'll never look back.

This is one of our most popular workshops! This one day
workshop gives you the knowledge to create a more
professional finish. You will work with samples of fabrics
such as chiffon, georgette, satin, lycra, fur and wool mixed
fabrics focusing on techniques such as underlining, ease
stitching, under stitching as well as
working on seams, hems, boning
and interfacing to name a few. This
is a really enjoyable day, packed
full of hints and techniques to
further your dressmaking skills.

This delightful one day workshop is really great fun,
showing you lots of techniques. To start the day, you will cut
and stitch a sample sleeve, with instruction in placement.
Then you will go on to learn how to create the perfect pleat,
ruche detailing on soft fabric, bias
binding, dress piping, invisible
bead stitching, cover buttons, satin
flowers and bows, dress sash and
dress loops (for corset style back).
A lot of skills in one short day, but
it is an excellent way to gain your
own finish on your future pieces.
Who doesn’t want a comfortable, easy to wear, summer

This one day workshop is all about style, twice! You will cut
and sew a simple jacket in duplicate. These two pieces will
then be invisibly stitched together to create a beautiful
reversible garment. Double the fun, double the use!
Shirts and blouses require a huge range of techniques to
produce the perfect wardrobe item so this course is now
over two days, although the days are independent of each
other and can be completed in any order. The first session
concentrates on making traditional and convertible collars,
producing sharp corners with no bulk. Yokes with no visible
seams and buttonbands with wonderful topstitching and
edgestitching are just a few of the other techniques.
Samples of specialist seams and stitches will also be
completed with the materials that are provided.

This fun four hour taster workshop has been designed for
the complete beginner; someone who is interested in
dressmaking but has so far not had a go or has just had a
little try. In this class you will be able to make a really handy
apron – the perfect way to test drive dressmaking without
the hefty outlay.
This particular day of techniques deals mainly with sleeves
– making a variety of plackets, attaching cuffs and changing
the sleeve style. We will look at several ways of attaching
sleeves and many of the processes learned can be used in
other areas of sewing. Methods of stabilising and making
buttonholes, then attaching buttonholes will be covered as
well as simple patch pockets to finish the garment. This is a
complementary workshop to Shirts & Blouses 1 but stands
independently so can be completed at any stage.

Techniques
During this intensive one-day workshop you will be
introduced to the classic techniques that produce a
wonderful cardigan-style jacket. These include shaping
fabric by steam shrinking, underlining, attaching stays and
quilting the lining to the main body of the half-scale jacket.
A variety of essential hand-stitches
will be taught and a number of
samples made for future reference.
There will be a follow-up course to
this but they can be completed in
any order and are independent of
each other.
Using modern interfacings and speed-tailoring processes
this workshop will teach you some tricks of the trade for
producing a professionally finished jacket. Hidden seam
lines, slim line welt pockets, smooth sleeve heads and “no
gape” lapels are just a few of the areas that you will feel
more confident in tackling, using the
samples that you will create during
the day.

Sewing 2 Day Course
With all the latest information from Palmer Pletsch about
fitting and sewing with knit and stretch fabrics, Celia will
guide you through the process of choosing a pattern,
identifying suitable material and dealing with the particular
challenges presented by these versatile fabrics. Ideally,
students will have a basic grasp of the tissue fitting process
having completed the “Fit for Fashion” course but can
discuss their needs beforehand. This is a two-day, intensive
workshop dealing with fitting tops and t-shirts, using a
McCalls pattern that can be adapted to provide a variety of
wardrobe basics.
This two-day course will introduce you to tissue fitting
trousers and is based on the reference book “Pants for Real
People” by Pati Palmer & Marta Alto. You will use a McCalls
trouser pattern to produce a basic pair of trousers and learn
the process of how to fit and sew trousers correctly. We will
look at common problems and simple ways to solve them,
including how to fit a pattern with a contoured yoke or
waistband and how to put in a zip perfectly.

The aim of this course is to show students how to choose
and fit the correct size of pattern after trying on calico
bodices for size, using the McCalls fitting shell pattern
2718. They will be shown how to deal with common
problems such as high round back, narrow shoulders and
full bust alterations. The two-day course is purely about
fitting techniques and so no sewing equipment is needed.
No previous experience is necessary. Students can bring
along extra patterns to fit on the second day. The reference
book will be “Fit for Real People” by Pati Palmer & Marta
